What bad timing. I just closed my account as it wasn't worth having it open for a measly 2%. Now this.

    • +15

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Why wasn't it worth it ? There are no account keeping fees and 2% is better than nothing.

      • +3

Exactly. I've been using it at 2% for many months. 2% is worth more than some credit card points (on Visa/Mastercard anyway).

      • +6

close it and wait for 6+ months and then you'll be eligible for promotions for new customers.

        • +2

i think you might be disappointed. let us know if it works

  • -2

    Dupe

Alright, i see the difference here is the use of a referral sign up for existing members.

  • +6
    • Can people who have gone from ING's 5% back to ME's 5% back give feedback on ME bank?

      • +1

The service itself is generally no-frills. The internet and mobile banking apps are quite primitive and you can only access customer service during regular hours, they close pretty early in the evening and not open on Sundays.

After my 5% Paywave discount i am going to close my account and move my money back to ING.

      • +1

At Me Bank - It says "The money you get back goes into your account 30 days after the date of transaction."
        ING has instant cash back.

        • +2

Takes about a week from my experience, and several transactions are combined into one cash back, makes it harder to follow if they are paying the correct amount.

        • +3

Not instant- can take 2-3 days.

        • They gave you cash back every week but the amount doesn't seems to add up and very confusing. I am gonna close my account and back to ING

        • For ING? - it seems almost instant to me - I guess its added when transaction is cleared as transaction takes couple of days. But ING shows cash back for each transaction so you can easily see what's happening.

    • -7

For ME Bank, you can buy up to $100 while ING up to $99.99 only; more suitable for gift cards :)

      • +1

I thought the $99.99 limit was a limitation of PayWave / PayPass. Are you sure it's up to and including $100?

        • Just talking about Paywave/paypass system not the discount, you can go all the way to $100. I've done it myself before.

      • +1

"You’ll receive 5% cash back when you Tap & Go™ on all MasterCard PayPass™ purchases under $100 for the first 6 months*."

      • i believe the mastercard system is <= 100, visa is <= 99.99

        • Yes I bought something for $100 and it was accepted by pay pass.

    • Not a big deal, but with ME you get your cash back "within" 30 days after the transaction. With ING it's usually the same day.

    • Thanks, Just signed up

will this be a new code or will the code from back in january still work ?

  • +3

in case you are wondering, no friend codes are available for people who are still using the 5% cash back.

  • +5

Does this mean the new sign up does not get the $75 available for the other deal?

    • +2

That's what I want to know!

    • +2

Can someone please confirm, I want to find out too!!!

      • +1

I don't see why you can't enter your details on the $75 bonus page, enter your details again on the friend referral page, then go ahead and set up the new account. Doesn't say anywhere about excluding other offers.

        • I agree. Enter details on both.

That way you can score the $75 cash and also help a fellow ozbargainer to extend their 5% off for another 6 months.

        • +1

Please don't shoot the messenger; I asked because I want to pass the offer to a friend:

          "Thank you for your message.

As your friend needs to enter a promotional code for both campaigns, they will need to choose which campaign code they would prefer to enter. They will not be able to do both.

Please let us know if we can assist you with anything else.

          Regards,
          Kate"

That wiki needs a good clean. Old referral codes (the majority of those listed) would have expired and no good to anybody.

        • Agreed. The deal link there was also referring to the previous deal from Jan.

I updated that and also made sure my 'friend code' is still valid if anyone is keen ;)

        • How do you check if your friend code is still valid?

  • Anyone help use my code on the referral list? Thanks in advance!!!

  • +9

where did everyone get their friend code from? i cant find one in my email

    • +4

true, how to get the code?

  • My 5% ran out on the 30th and I am very upset that I have not received the refer a friend email. I rang them today and mentioned that I didn't get one. They just said that the system generates them automatically and randomly. Not everyone will get the opportunity. I don't buy that. Surely there is method… perhaps people that didn't get as much use of of it than others for example got the email today. Does anyone know?

    • +1

Mine just ran out the other day. No warning, no notice, no email, no info on referrals or how to get the 2%. Signed up with ME instead. Will probably close my account now.

    • Try sending a message to them once you log into your account. I messaged them as an existing customer asking to be put on the 5% paywave offer last year. Not only did they do that and sent me the paywave card, but it seems I'm past the 6 month mark and still getting rebates (its been almost a year).

      Loving ING :D

      • 5% or 2% ?

      • i had a similar thing, lasted about 1.5 years.. then it ended :(

    • BEKLEI
I didn't get one last time this offer was around. I had hardly used the 2% offer I had at the time .. since then, I really ramped up my spend at 2% off, and this time i received the offer.

I think they send the 5% off referral offers to people who are actually using the account.

      • Agree with you Akred. I stopped using the account after the 5% cash back expired but recently reused it again and received the referral code 2 days ago. Now if someone uses the code I'll be happy as!

      • i'm still use my orange everyday account for everyday transactions and i haven't received a code yet

  • +2

Did anyone cancel ME bank then sign up again and successfully get 5% rebate?

    • +1

A few people did, it's mentioned in the ME Bank thread.

  • i haven't received an email so far :(

  • Very keen on applying - how long does it usually take to transfer money between Commonwealth and Bankwest since they've merged.

    • when i do it in the morning it's in by the afternoon, works both ways

    • +2

You realise this is ING not Bank West right?

  • +5

where and how can i find my friend code? thanks

    • yeah same question. where to generate own code?

      • You get emailed one… it seems to be you get one if you're an active user of the account.

        • +1

I'm an active user, went down from 5% to 2% a week ago but no email for me. Probably have to have sustained use @ 2%… Will email them and ask…

        • I'm confused. Can you still use the friend code from January?

        • Someone said in above comments the email is sent randomly

        • ive been an active user for probably a year now (6 months on 5% and 6 months on 2%), and i didnt receive a referral code either. i contacted ING requesting a code and just they advised that they run different promotions from time to time.

i don't think they give codes out randomly as some would have no use for it. its most likely targeted to specific individuals who satisfy certain criteria, could be geographical, could be how much you spend or how often you spend.
Anyone else have any luck with requesting a code?
2% is still better than nothing so im not going to use the "give me the code or else ill close my account" line with them.

        • My promo finished around March. I got an email about the $100 iconic gift card if I deposit $2000 in May, so that's what I did. Yesterday I got an email about the 5% referral promo. So I reckon if you put some money into the account, they might send you something?

        • in order for me to continue getting 2% i have to have my wage deposited (ie minimum $2000 per calender month). so its some other criteria they are looking for.

        • Maybe if u stop putting 2000 bucks for a few months, they might give u the special offer… My father in law got a $10 voucher from woolies or coles cuz they havent used their rewards card for a few months while they were overseas, whereas I didnt get anything cuz I use it all the time… who knows

  • Can I ring up ING to get my code? Was it emailed to me?

Can you pay for stuff by credit card, then pay your credit card bill by tapping at the post office?

    • no, no and no.
So far no one has reported success requesting a code from ING. Tho that doesn't mean it's not worth trying.
It would have been emailed, and should appear in 'my messages' in your account. Chances are if you haven't seen it by now you didn't get it.
And you cannot pay credit with credit. The only exception I know to this is a balance transfer - not paypass.

  • i dont get a code again :( my account must be flagged as not eligible for another 5% extension~

  • +1

also, an other interesting facts, i used the paywave on a coke machine to buy a $2.50 water, and did not get a wave and save bonus. it is charged to coca cola amatil at north sydney. looks like a fall back internet transaction.

  • OKAY i fianlly opened an ING account

  • I want the $250 Iconic gift card. Can I be a referral for somebody and also get that promotion? If so, happy to lend a hand.

  • Has anyones 5% gone past the 6 month mark and kept working out of interest?

    • Yes but eventually they catch on

      • I only ask as my 6 months ran out and i stopped xferring cash onto it, just checked my statements and realised i was using it for a week after the 6 months and was still getting it.

        • Yes but eventually they catch on

    • Mine lasted around 7.5 months.

  • ME bank is only for 6 months?

"Receive 5% cash back on all contactless purchases made within Australia using PayPass Tap & Go for amounts of $100.00 or less for 6 months from the date your account is opened. "

  • how do i generate a referral code?

  • +1

I think even 2% cashback is better than earning reward points on credit cards?

    • Indeed.

Even the Signature Citibank VISA one is only giving 1.5 points/$ = ~0.86% return when claiming basic gift vouchers.

Best other one I've seen is a Amex Black from the bank (free often associated with homeloans) which gives ~1.6%, but a lot of places don't take AMEX/charge a surcharge.

ING Paywave is still your best for the groceries :) -2% or 5%

    • Just did my calculation. I have Westpac's Altitude Black cards.

      If I use my Amex, its 3 points/$ = ~1.79% and for MC, its 1.25 points/$ = ~0.75% when claiming $100 cash rebate.

      • Yup I got the same thing.

So order of preference is ING pay wave, Amex Black and then Citibank Visa Signature.

The black master card has no use - less points/$ vs Citibank and more points needed to claim too!

        • but you can claim $100 cash rebate, instead of gift card.

        • Still 0.86% vs 0.75%? 0.86% applies to pretty common grocery ones like Coles.

What's your reasoning for going with the black MC?

        • Because I dont have a Signature card. ;)

  • Now just need to work out salary go into ubank for 1.06% bonus rate for savings or into ing for 2% cashback for spending

    • Do both! It doesn't have to be salary. Just needs a 2k movement once a month. I have it scheduled to have 2k transferred in and then 2k out within a couple of days.

      • +1

        damn you guys are smart

        • It is very smart way. What is rate instead of 5%?

      • don't forget citibank as well :)

  • Is this something we use as an Everyday account. Like to transfer pay into? What are the Drawbacks?

  • Thanks OP. Time to extend mine another 6 months.

For those that had their ING accounts closed, if you were eligible for the ME Bank 5% Tap and Go cashback, could you theoretically use ME Bank and split up transactions without getting flagged? There doesn't seem to be a condition in their T&C that states it is only for "everyday transactions" like ING.

  • Thanks. But I just missed this opportunity, have recon relative to joined INGD a few days before.

  • Has anybody who is still in the first 6 months or 5% cashback period in this account received this promotion code and email from ING ?

  • They said it is not for everyone :(

The Refer a Friend promotion is available to selected clients who have received an email or SMS directly from us with their unique refer a friend code and instructions.

If you are eligible, your referred friend must open and activate their account prior to the 30th June 2014. They must also be a brand new customer to the Orange Everyday.

  • +1

Im on the hook for life now. This promotion has been getting me 5% for the last 10 months. I like it so much that I bought a house and got the home loan through them as well. 4.88% with no fees, and free withdraw from any banks atm. Yes please.

    • +1

How many times did you end up tapping with your paywave for the 5% discount on the house?

      • lol…can I please split this into 4800 smaller transactions please?

  • emailed and asked for a code, automated response: "we cannot process your request". Oh well…

    • I wonder if the friend code from the January referral promotion will work?

      • Yes! This is what I want to know. I have a relative to sign up, but my friend code is from January, and I don't want them to miss out on the $75 if my code has expired :(

        • Worth a try. Get them to join and ring and complain if your 5% cashback isn't turned on.

  • Where do I find my refer code in my ING account?
