I've heard some chinese phones have malware.

Yeh I dunno when this fear will end tbh. Never worried about China phones till I saw that article, and "Star" branded phones have been posted on ozb before. Not sure which brands are more reputable though

They probably make their profit by mining your data and selling it.

      • easy fix, just install CM/AOSP firmware on it and ur gold

        • How many actually support that?

        • What is CM/AOSP firmware? where to get it?

        • CM = Cyanogenmod http://www.cyanogenmod.org/
AOSP = Android Open Source Project https://source.android.com/

Both of which are variations on Android aiming to standardise the interface and features across all devices.

Unfortunately these are only really supported for major brands and models. For more random or unheard of models you need to look in the community for someone who has build a ROM for your particular device.

If you are new to the process just be warned this process can render your device inoperable.

        • Thanks for the info, I will check it out!

Just be warned, I have one of these and it has serious problems with reception. Also, after about a year the power and volume buttons are beginning to not recognise presses.

Yeah from experience most Chinese phones do have malware built in. Only way to remove is to root it then delete (can use titanium backup).

Aside from that, Chinese phones cheat the system into thinking the specs are better than what they actually are.
E.g antutu will report full HD screen and 32gb ROM but if you use alternate diagnostics software you'll find that it's most likely only 720p and 4gb ROM.

    Buyer beware!

    • You really think most phones have malware? I thought that it would've been all over the web in that case as it recently been for Star. I'd say there is a bit of FUD going on here as these phones are so cheap that it's hard to compete.

With that said I'm keen to check my current phone. How do you detect?

    • Also which diags software would you recommend for specs?

    • Which malware did you experience from a Chinese Phone?

    • hmm samsung and Apple are scared, maybe? :p

    • Gotta love "Oh.. we found malware on a single model of phone.. If there is, then ALL Chinese Phones must have malware on them". Last time I checked, Apple, Samsung and just about every other manufacturer has their phones made in China.. hmmmm..

  • I have 1 of these (albeit the turbo version). Best phone I've ever owned. Amazing screen detail. Bought it a year ago for $340. The malware effected only a single brand (Star) by a particular seller. I guess its hit and miss with Chinese phones, but I'm extremely happy with mine. Keep in mind if you do need to warranty repair it, you can't post it due to the lithium battery, and freight is $55. Then you'll probably be charged another $15 for the retailer to send it back to Oz (this is what happened to me with my wifes phone which just so happened to be the Star N9500. Half screen became unresponsive). No malware on her phone but died again soon after (kept freezing, I think might have been overheating), cost to freight back way to unfeasible, bought her a LG which she luvs.

  • Here's a review of UMI X2 not sure if it exactly this model http://www.gizchina.com/2013/06/03/umi-x2-review/

Some of focalprice reviews though are really bad http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/burned-why-you-should-never-buy…

    • It's a lottery with the Chinese suppliers isn't it? I had a good experience with FocalPrice. They delivered a presale phone I bought from them about two weeks after the presale date so a good experience on that occasion.
