^ definitely… was going to post the same… dont forget to use cbigtreat code for 20% off for the toshiba from dse

      • cheers, just got the dse one for $199 delivered

      • thanks, I also got the dse one.

    • Probably, yes but from the specs it is a smaller, thinner and substantially lighter. The Encore 8 is quite heavy for this display size.

  • So this is a full windows capable machine (since you say this is like a surface PRO) .. is Baytrail not the atom one which can't run x86 apps?

    • New Atom is Baytrail (not all Baytrails are Atoms, older Atoms aren't Baytrails). All Baytrails and Atoms run x86 apps (either Android or Windows).

    • "Arm" chips in Surface RT tablets (also known as just plain "surface") are the ones that don't run x86 apps. Surface PRO runs x86 apps, as they have an x86 chip (whether that be an atom or otherwise).

      • Ahh I always get confused between Atom and Arm somehow .. Doesn't help with Surface, surface Pro, Surface 2, Windows and Windows RT naming either.?

It's like have to vote for John Jackson or Jack Jhonson

Windows 8 has no value :)

    • For those who don't believe me

        …and what's your point?

Did you read the first line of the post?

.. but surely a bargain price tablet considering the value of Windows 8 alone!

        • Apart from the fact that while Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 may not cost anything for devices below 9", it does not mean it has no value. Besides, Android doesn't cost OEMs anything. Sooo..again, what's the point?

        • Android does cost the OEMs.

You obviously have never studied any economics in your life. Learn the meaning of the word "value" - it's something which adds to one's utility. How much it costs the manufacturer to put W8 on their device is irrelevant. It adds value because it adds to what the end user can do with their tablet.

      • so clearly Microsoft sees Win8 as adding absolutely no value to their manufacturing partners.
when you have no way of differentiating against your competition, your only lever is price.

why is everyone being so serious anyway?
I have a Surface Pro, I also use Android for smaller form factors. While the desktop mode is good, it's just not practical for small form factors. Clearly being able to run full Windows apps in something like this has value to someone, but not most people.

        • Not quite, there could be many reasons why MS chooses to give W8 for free, maybe to gain market share…etc. It's not all about direct profits today.

        • Or it's about survival and staying relevant.

    According to http://www.myvoyo.com/chanpin/pingban/2014/285.shtml,
It's based on Atom Z3735D, for anyone that maybe interested~

  • Well, that was one way to spend 2 hours looking at sites for W8x8 tablets. Was very tempted by the Lenovo Thinkpad 8, but decided to go for the ASUS VivoTab 8.

i had bought and used 8 inch windows 8 tablet and the most annoying think about it is that you cant really be productive with it.

i meant, i cant even type in excel or words properly as the on screen keyboard filled up 45% of screen in landscape, and when you turn it vertical, the width of the screen is just to narrow.

the screen, the fonts size, are just to small for eyes and your fingers/styluus.

compared to ipad mini, ipad mini touch screen, fonts size, area etc are just perfect and precise.

8 inch tablet is only good for browsing, watch movies / tubes, light note taking.

for serous productivity, you need to go to at least 10inch tablet

  • Is it legit Windows 8 license?

-apparently it comes with Windows 8 legit Chinese edition.

    • So can anyone confirm whether it is Clover or Bay Trail? Because I would want to know before ordering. The description on the website is 1.8 GHz but mentions both (can only be one) and according to Wikipedia the Atom Z3735D is 1.33 GHz while the Z2760 is 1.8 GHz so probably Clover Trail. Pity because Bay Trail is newer & superior. If it was indeed Bay Trail and if a good keyboard & fitted case could be found then it might be a good low resolution, low cost Surface alternative as the OP suggested.
