  • Do kids really need tablets?!

    • Of course they do (being sarcastic).

Haven't you seen that video of a 2-3 year old who tries to use his/her finger to scroll pages in a book.

My daughter had one when she was two, kids pick up on how to use them really quickly and they are great learning tools. There are heaps of puzzle, counting and memory games that are great for young development. She could type her name when she was three. They don't replace learning to write with a pen/pencil and paper and kids don't need tablets but they can be brilliant learning tools.

Learning to write with a pen/pencil? Considering how "computerised" education has now become, I think the only place a pen and/or pencil will be seen is in art class, and then not for writing. Writing is a dying art, and I'm not sure I'm sad to see it go.

Every Christmas I discover how infrequently I use a pen or pencil, when I have to write out Christmas cards. It's like I have to re-learn a forgotten skill.

    • Yep, they do.

Forget about playing games like Chess that require complex decision making, forget about card games that require multiple people to play (you hate making friends, after all), or Lego bricks that require creativity. After all, you have to clean up your room after throwing the bricks all over the floor. Where's the reward in completing a board game? You don't get any EXP or extra cash.

Now you can sit hunched over a glowing screen, swipe and touch to respond to visual cues, get reward with virtual in-game currency (buy 500 Gems for $99 now!!!) and raise cute virtual pets in a virtual farm. Let Kim Kardashian teach you the meaning of Hollywood Glam! No complex choices! Single player experience! And best of all, the games are free! (Disclaimer: In-app Purchases not included)

      • Lol thanks for elaborating, my sentiments exactly. :|

I had to get that off my chest.

My point being, tablets can make OK learning devices, but depending on what the kids actually play on it, could lead to some behavioural issues. I say this because the Google Play Store is chock full of these crappy asset and time management games, which are basically spin-offs of Farmville and other cutesy asset management, which lack any sort of strategic gameplay and are mostly just about hoarding stuff. If these games have taught anything, its teching kids that materialism is good and that rewards and praise are to be expected when you've done something right. That's not represantative of the real world.

It's not even a game anymore when the whole thing is riddled with IAPS and there is no critical choice to make. The game simply tells you 'push this button' to make something happen. Cue Stanley Parable — push buttons when instructed.

Basically most games nowadays offer a limited set of interaction which doesn't require the player to think, and it's also these types of games that are downloaded the most and advertised to children.
