    Dang, was hoping for a R9 290!

    • Unfortunately you missed the sale on that by a week or so (Jun 26th), they had it for an awesome price ($363)

They previously had it for $379 on Jun 16th so it has come down a bit, surely they will have it on sale again within a month if you sub to the newsletter you can pick one up :D

      • Damn thats a nice price!

      • Yeah, but that model has a high fail rate so the savings are lost in wasted time and return costs.

Had a look, nothing looks amazingly priced (unless I missed something). The WD Reds are a little cheaper than say PCCG. Also the R9 280 is the same price elsewhere

Rebadged 7950's still selling for more than the old 7950 sold for at the end of it's lifecycle.

There's little point to getting one of these imo; the performance-per-dollar is just not good enough and another price-drop on the 280X is around the corner (they've been hitting $300 for the past few months; they can only go lower).

No idea why the other 280 (not X!) deal got so many positives, but hey not my money. Plenty of good used 7970s and 280x cheap if you can't wait for the next gen.

    • Yes and no. I agree it's poor value for money, but I wouldn't exactly say it's a rebadged 7950 (boost to be precise). The 7950B was rated 225w and once it reached this limit, it throttled the clock speed, thus affecting performance.
To overcome this, the 280 has a 250W limit so it's a tiny bit faster and should allow for better overclocking.

Edit: PC case gear has the MSI and Asus DirectCU II Top overclocked versions going for the same price (+ shipping and three free games).
The MSI has a 933MHz base clock which boosts to 1000MHz and the Asus is at 874MHz base and 980MHz boost.

    • My recent driver update for my 7950 called it a R9-280, so even their own software cannot tell the difference.

  • I bought two R9 290s Sapphire Reference cards for $500 on that 15% eBay sale two weeks ago.
R9 290 can be bought for $250 ea if you look closely enough.

    • They run hot and loud though.

      • How loud ? Good case air flow ?
