"To find out if you've won a $5 PayPal voucher check
your Big Deal Alert emails on 15 August."

  • pity they are only valid for 2 weeks, still, nice freebie

    • yeah - not sure how that works - say you have $50 in your paypal account already - is $5 just going to dissapear? Damn paypal and their lame rules.

      • I would assume so

      • No, you'd most likely just get a $5 discount voucher code to apply during checkout when paying with paypal….so I imagine the code would just expire after 2 weeks.

  • Signed up, fingers crossed! :D Nice work Gotbean!

$5 for daily spam yeah? lol

    • Just unsubscribe after you've used the voucher if you don't like it. =P

  • Guys, it says -"To find out if you've won a $5 PayPal voucher check
your Big Deal Alert emails on 15 August."
So please, it is NOT necessary that even if you do subscribe you are going to win!

    • "not necessary"? That doesn't make sense. It's given to the first 10,000, so we all have a decent chance of receiving the $5.

  • -1

It doesn't say you're guaranteed to win $5, it's just a ploy to get you to sign up for spam. Dubious marketing trick, got me fooled, so it's a - for me.

    • ? it does if you're one of the first 10,000… you can unsubscribe afterwards… plus, you're never "guaranteed" anything - things may not come in the post or woolies may run out of bertolli sauce.

sounds like someone got up on the wrong side of the bed

      • +1

u can always get a raincheck from woolies if they run out of an advertised special…:)

    • What's there to lose?

  • +1

$5 can go towards a necklace for me :) fingers crossed!!!

no guarantee of getting the money - its a competition from the sounds of things.

    • different to a competition - guaranteed to get $5 if you're one of the first 10,000. a competition is drawn at random.

unhappy that you may have missed out?

also, it's the same as stock levels… a company might have 100 wii's to sell for cheap - this is the same concept, you just don't see the stock levels

    • You are correct, it's a competition. It has terms and conditions of a competition and had been registered with the appropriate state governments for a 'trade promotion' - also known as a competition.

Lastly, the terms and conditions clearly show the permits:

Authorised under NSW PERMIT No. LTPS/09/06736 and ACT PERMIT No. TP09/02951, Victorian Permit No. 09/2407 & SA Licence No. T09/1774.

Yes, it's a competition as there are prizes involved. Therefore, it explains the need for permits.

The difference is that, they are not RANDOMLY giving out prizes, instead, prizes are on a first-come-first-serve basis (ie. first 10000 subscribers).

On a sidenote, it also states that:
        "Already a Big Deal Subscriber?
Thanks for your support! You can't enter, but don't worry, you'll be receiving a $5 credit straight into your PayPal account shortly."

So essentially, they are giving $5 to more than 10000 people.

    • I believe eBay is saying that it is not drawn at random but rather sequentially selected retrospectively.
They need a competition permit because from your perspective you don't know if you win or not until the results are published, so it involves uncertainty (i.e. luck) for you.

If would be difficult for eBay to justify to ACCC why they are still promising $5 vouchers for sign ups when a few days later (or even now) there clearly aren't anymore vouchers to be given out.
So as an advertisement it should be pulled (or else they could contravene TPA for baiting), but it's okay as a competition as the consumer knows that there is an element of luck involved.
(Arguably in my perspective the 'luck' nature is not sufficiently disclosed. But will see.. they seemed to have thought about this legally already)

Was it too hard for them to tell if we are the 10,000th LUCKY person or not…

    • it was clever of them not to do that actually, we'd have a big 'EXPIPRED' thing on this and no one would be giving them their email ;)

  • cool, $5 for me to click a few times to subscribe and unsubscribe?

    Yes please.

  • I wonder if I can transfer the $5 to my bank instead.
    lol

    • It's a voucher for $5 off. This deal isn't for paypal credit.

  • How generous of eBay….a $5 discount wow. They're not losing anything.

There's nothing big about this deal considering the amount they take off you when you accept paypal payments.

This deal is more like the 'Get your $5 back deal'.

    • -1

      ?? 10k x $5 = $50k they're giving away
      "They're not losing anything" ???

I think you dont understand the concept of capitalism or buy/sell.

No one is FORCING you to sell stuff and take paypal fees - and no one is FORCING them to give the $50k away.
      Whats the problem exactly?

  • Sign up for free spam daily…

  • wont work for me, I sign in and then it thinks about it and then brings me back to sign in again. Cleared the cookies and all

    • Turn off your Flash blocker.
Took me a while to figure out.

      • flash blocker?

  • Signed up at 1pm today, hope i'm in the first 10,000.

Anyone too lazy to click on a couple links, and then cancel the spam a week later, is obviously too rich for free ebay voucher.
Every little bit counts in this recession.

    • Or too poor to be buying anything on ebay worth more than $5 ..

  • “To find out if you’ve won a $5 PayPal voucher check your Big Deal Alert emails on 15 August.”

Got todays email, but theres no mention of being successful/unsuccessful getting the voucher, maybe theyll send another one, but thought it'd be in the same email.

  • Dear ,
You've won a $5 PayPal voucher to use on eBay.com.au between 1 - 14 September 2009 because you were in the first 10,000 eBay members to subscribe to The Big Deal email alerts as part of our recent promotion.

To take advantage of this offer, simply enter the PayPal voucher code, that we send you on 1 September, into the voucher code field at checkout to receive $5 off the final item price, including shipping. Remember that you can only use your voucher once.

  • No voucher for me. My browser history shows I signed up about 3:15PM EST on the 7th.

  • No voucher here either..

  • +2

Worst promotion by eBay … Nothing here also
Was waiting for the 15th to unsubscribe from the daily spam of bad offers
Still no $5 voucher, I guess I'll just unsubscribe

    • Yeh no voucher for me either! Damn feebay!

  • +3

    Unsubscribe time :)

  • bah, these Paypal vouchers (10%, $5) shall remain mystical to me…

  • What .. I subscribed as soon as I got the promo email (just before this was posted), didn't receive any voucher. Poor form

  • I signed up before the deal was posted here and no $5 for me.

  • Yes, eBay's promotion is clearly rigged. I subscribed to the Big Deal during this promotion several hours before my friend subscribed to the Big Deal. He ended up getting a voucher, and I didn't. That should be impossible if it's truly the first 10,000 people to subscribe who get a voucher. I contacted eBay about it several times and they weren't able to provide me with an explanation. In the end, they just blamed it on their 'system'.

  • No voucher, unsubscribed, and voting negative to eBay because receiving their spam for 2 weeks in exchange for nothing is not a bargain, at least for me.

  • no voucher :'(

  • Ditto….nothing for me either. Unsubscribed.

  • No $5, have been receiving spam from them for three weeks. Screw eBay and us thinking they would actually pull through on this deal.

  • No voucher for me. Like i needed another reason to hate ebay and paypal. >:(

  • I just unsuscribed grrrrr junk

  • damn, too bad for y'all. i got my voucher ages ago, and i successfully used it on friday.
