Hey guys, 2nd post ever (1st was removed due to the deal already being up; sorry about that!)

Been researching these tablets for a while and their reviews have been top notch. At $485 they're a steal. I think they only released today in Australia.

I've never bought from this website, but all reviews on them point to them being trust worthy as well. In fact, after google searching them, I found an ozbargain forum discussing them. Again, all positive!

Edit: Appears there is postage, unless anyone can find a coupon or similar on the page.

Unsure with availability.

Get on them if you're keen for the best available android tablet! (IMO, ofcourse)

  • How's this compare against the tab pro 10.1 and note 10.1 2014

    • This is the 'best' android tablet range so far.
(Seeing as Chinese tablets don't get lots of publicity).

Pro 10.1 2014 is around $425 on eBay and that suffered from slight lag.

RRP of this is $599 and the 32GB is $100 more… Pretty sad that it's following the Apple pricing model.

Edit: I'll pass with that $$$ shipping :(

For 10" Android tablets, I think I'd take the Xperia Z2 Tablet over any of Samsung's (display and battery are the only drawbacks there, though). I'm seriously considering a Tab S 8.4 though. The black / bronze model looks very nice.

        • For 10" Android tablets, I think I'd take the Xperia Z2 Tablet

Could you highlight more reasons why you prefer the Sony?

        • @leonheart1:

Well, for starters I prefer the physical design much more. I don't hate Samsung's, but I really like Sony's clean, minimalistic look as opposed to faux leather, dimples and shiny faux chrome highlights.

The display is good. Not great, but good. Lower res than Samsung's and not as good as the AMOLED display for colours and black levels, but it's no slouch. RAM is the same, it has expandable storage like the Samsung, etc. So…

The crux of the matter is really the skin and general performance. Touchwiz is still a bloated mess and it slows down general performance a lot… a matter which isn't helped by the Samsung's 2560x1600 resolution and the slightly lower performing S800. The Sony has a really light skin that I have some experience with and it's performance won't be bogged down by that, or the mammoth resolution of the Samsung. And I really don't want to be stuck with Touchwiz. If the Samsung tablets were easily mod-able, I'd give them more consideration… but IIRC, Exynos SoC's don't play well with custom ROM's whereas Snapdragon's are the staple. I've seen Touchwiz bog down a 2 day old GS5… it takes far too long to even open the dialer (a couple of seconds pause) and even longer to open the web browser. All common tasks that would drive me absolutely mad if I had to wait through a pause every time I touched something.

The front-facing speakers, water and dust resistance are nice touches, thouhgh the battery life would be a bit of a downer (though somewhat compensated for, given the lower resolution), but honestly, the performance is make or break for me, and the design seals the deal. There's nothing more infuriating than when your tablet starts to slow down on you, I've found. YMMV, of course.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness:

As much as people like bashing TouchWiz, I don't think it's TouchWiz that's the problem.

My Nexus 10 is quite laggy now, and I've barely installed anything on it. Stock launcher, stock everything, latest OS.

My HTC One M8 is starting to lag here and there as well, usually when waiting for the keyboard to pop up.

Sony Z2 uses 1080p is not a good res for a 10" tablet.

        • @lostn:

1200p, actually, and I already noted that the lower res was one of the only drawbacks.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness: 1200p, 1080p, still not very good. The screen is probably the most important factor for me and that's a big difference in resolution. Also, bezel seems huge on the Z2.

        • @lostn:

Personally, I'd rather the tablet have adequate performance over a bigger resolution. The resolution I can live with, shitty performance I can't. When it's all said and done, I'd buy an 8-inch tablet over 10" anyway.

I'm not just bashing for the sake of bashing, I seriously think Touchwiz is a problem. As I noted in my earlier comment, I compared, side by side, a friend's two day old Galaxy S5 to my ~8 month old Nexus 5, and the GS5 was slower in opening apps. And if it will experience performance degradation, as you're theorising all Android devices do, the problem will only get worse.

I've used Sony's skin before, and it's doesn't feel anywhere near as heavy as Samsung's. Smooth performance all round. And if it doesn't end up meeting expectations, I can always load up a stable custom ROM - whereas you're stuck with Touchwiz or unstable ROM's with the Galaxy Tab's. Hence why I'd rather bet on Sony's device rather than Samsung's (even though I love the AMOLED display).

My Nexus 10 is quite laggy now

What OS version did your N10 begin life on? 4.2 or 4.3?

My HTC One M8 is starting to lag here and there as well, usually when waiting for the keyboard to pop up.

This is the only time my N5 'lags' as well, by which I mean there's a slightly uncharacteristic pause. But pauses notwithstanding, the UI is always smooth. I can't say the same for my experience with Touchwiz (owned a GS2, as well as the aforementioned test of the GS5).

    • The main difference is the AMOLED display versus 'Super Clear LCD', the lack of stylus support (compared to Note 2014) and the dimpled back instead of faux leather. It looks like the WiFi version of the Tab S uses the Exynos 5420 whereas the other two use Snapdragon 800's (might be counter-productive if you want to flash custom ROM's, I hear). Tab S and Note 2014 have 3GB of RAM, TabPro 10.1 has only 2GB. Tab S 10.5 has a smaller battery than both.

      • Seems like note 10.1 I'd the better tab. You should be able to get one for the same price.

        • It does have the best combination of specs, I suppose. Big battery, Snapdragon 800, active digitiser, 3GB RAM, etc. The only drawbacks I can think of would be it's lower inbuilt storage (16GB versus 32GB, though both are expandable) and it's possible longevity. It was released last year, and didn't fit into any specific product line like the Note/TabPro's do, and the Tab S's do, and therefore might be easier for Samsung to 'forget'. Also, I recall some troubles regarding its performance when it was released, but I cbf'd checking up on that. Take it was you will.

  • 29 doller delivery cost for me.

    • Postage cost for me too. Damn, it says on there that it's free!

      • it says on there that it's free!

I could not see any mention of free delivery.

        • OP might've been looking at the small red banner on the right sidebar. That's for some RC specific part of the store, though, not the actual product page. And looking at the eligible items… with those prices, you'd goddamn want free shipping.

    • Makes this a slightly better deal then…

I'm looking for the Tab s 8.4" 4G. IF anyone finds a good price, do let me know!

    • +1

I am also looking for one. Hopefully with the new line coming out the other tablets with 4G will drop in price.

  • I want to try it in store first before buying this, already have the Nexus 10 and Nexus 7, it need to be really amazing for me to buy another tablet.

    • They are in JB HiFi (Browns Plains, QLD) as I wanted to see one. Had one displayed - no pricing on the counter though. The screen is ridiculously vibrant. Best display of any device by far. just insane. Immediately sets it apart from all other devices. No mistaking it.

It had the usual high def video that I played - but there was a slight and constant stutter in the playback. Annoying as. I would want to play around with it a bit more as that stutter was just shit. Might have been just that media file, not sure, I was on lunch break and in a hurry.

…but that display - oh my God.

      • +1

JB Chermside QLD have the 10.5 on display as well. That screen is amazing, and the tablet is really light. The Z2 tablet was next to it. The Z2's screen looked pretty dull in comparison, and the bezels are huge.

I really like the Z2's design though. If only the Z2 had a super amoled screen and the same size and weight as the Tab S.
