    • Good idea, been meaning to see it some year.

Canberra bashing? That's so edgy and new.

      • -5

Canberra IS a dirty old hole. Nothing edgy and new, just a fact.

      • +1

Canberra bashing these days is akin to New Zealand sheep jokes and is useful for identifying and avoiding the uninteresting in any group of people

        • +2

Bahhh, the odd sheep joke can still be funny…

Said the Kiwi who lives in Canberra.

Well it's kind of silly that it's our capital.

Tourists must go there and be like wtf? Lol

      • +2

The War Memorial is really interesting now.

    • +4

Haha froberts2, you should take advantage of this bargain and plan a visit to Canberra, just to see for yourself how wrong your impression of the capital is.

      • Nothing wrong with it, as such.
        It's just boring.

        • -6

Yes, and let's not forget that aside from boring, there is a permanent smell in Canberra. It stinks like mothballs and compost.

  • I can't work out where the redemption code goes. There is no option in the fare search pages, and while the flyer says its available at checkout, I can't see it in the the "Availability" or "Passengers & Payment" tabs.

Also, my reading of the flyer from the word "between" is that these codes are valid for travel away from Canberra too.

    • +2

Yes, you are correct, these codes are valid for travel in both directions.

On the home page, when you click the big "Express Tickets" image on the left nav bar, there's a box at the bottom of the popup which says "Enter promo code".

      • +1

Bingo. I'd completely missed that, but in fairness to me I'd followed the flyer instructions by selecting the city and proceeding to checkout :)

  • Anybody knows how much they charge for kids (4 and 1.5 y/o)?

    • It looks like it's cheaper to buy an adult ticket for your 4-year-old, since the code doesn't seem to apply to children (3-14yo).

As for your 1.5-year-old, it appears the ticket costs $35 to/from Melbourne, but he/she can travel free if you choose not to allocate a seat (nursed infant).

Fits perfectly with a w/e in sydney, cheers op, just need to check departure/arrival times against the pros of an airfare

      Cheaper to drive

      • +3

Only if you've got a car full of passengers.

Assuming around 8l/100km & $1.55/litre fuel cost it'll cost you $35 in fuel, + wear & tear on the car, tyres, tolls, parking in the CBD over night, plus you have to drive the whole way (can sleep/watch movies on the bus) and you've got to have a car, pay rego, insurance etc…

Don't get me wrong, I generally prefer to drive because it's more comfortable and convenient to have the car when you get there…but it sure ain't cheaper if it's just me going…

Thanks Op! Perfect timing.. I Needed cheap tickets to Sydney airport next month :)

  • Melbourne to Canberra on a bus for $45… that's what they're paying me, right?

  • awesome price to go home <3

  • I remember catching a Greyhound from Canberra to Adelaide back in 2011 when returning from a postgrad course being held on campus at ANU…I was too stingy to pay the ~$200 for a flight so endured something stupid like 15 hours on a Greyhound bus.

Would never do that again! I certainly wouldn't want to be travelling further than Syd - Canb on a coach bus. But this is a good deal nonetheless for a hell of a lot of covered miles…

I've done a couple of overnight 12 hour trips on a greyhound bus in my backpacking days…it wasn't a highlight of my trip!

      • Lucky these express trips are only 3.5hrs. Your butt will thank you for it.

      • Same.

Miami to Chicago. Bus of FrEaKs.

Melbourne to Canberra, return. Should've driven myself.

  • Is it better to take the train (Sydney to Canberra return)? Anyone with experiences on both? Much appreciated

    • +3

IIRC there is only one train service a day and it disembarks in South Canberra. When I last checked some years ago, the normal priced bus was way cheaper, and the bus stop in Civic is more convenient to me.

      • Thanks

      • There is more than one train service per day (3 according to www.nswtrainlink.info), but buses are still far more frequent and convenient.

In addition to the points tplen1 raises, the buses are also quicker and give you the option of going straight to/from Sydney airport or Central. Both Greyhound and Murrays usually quote 3h 30m, although this obviously depends on traffic and any airport drop-offs/pick-ups. Trains from Canberra (Kingston) to Sydney Central take 4h+.

  • The YHA hostel is only a 5 minute walk from the bus depot, but the train is out at Kingston.

  • Is there any new code available ??
