What's the difference between the 2 devices?

    • Different looks~They work the same.

      • That's the only difference? Inside hardware are exactly same?

      • Are there any differences at all apart from looks?

        • +6

          NO for godsake

        • +1

@mrwillc: Calm down buddy, it's just a question on the internet

Thinking that maybe there's a problem with his mouse… Clearly the scroll button isn't working, because only 2 comments above the Rep posted this comment!

  • I have one already & a nice unit - use it with the torque free version app.

  • Will this work with a 08 toyota corolla?

    • +1

It supports all OBD-II protocols as follows
      SAE J1850 PWM(41.6Kbaud)
      SAE J1850 VPW(10.4Kbaud)
      ISO9141-2(5 baud init,10.4Kbaud)
      ISO14230-4 KWP(5 baud init,10.4 Kbaud)
      ISO14230-4 KWP(fast init,10.4 Kbaud)
      ISO15765-4 CAN(11bit ID,500 Kbaud)
      ISO15765-4 CAN(29bit ID,500 Kbaud)
      ISO15765-4 CAN(11bit ID,250 Kbaud)
      ISO15765-4 CAN(29bit ID,250 Kbaud)SAE J1939 CAN(29bit ID,250Kbaud)
      USER1 CAN(11
      bit ID,125Kbaud)
      USER2 CAN(11
      bit ID,50*kbaud)

If your car (after 1996) supports the above OBD protocols, then it works.

      • +2

how do i know if my car supports any of the above protocols?

        • lol and how does the OP know what car you drive?

FYI, "there are approximately 600 million passenger cars worldwide"; which translates to hundreds of makes and thousands of models - hardly worth the effort listing all for a $6 product :P

Damn it, the troll got meeeee

        • +12

@ccrap: I think he is asking where you can go to find out what protocols your car supports, not for an exact response regarding his car…

        • @Agret: exactly what i meant. dont like someone trolling, let alone crap.

        • +1

If you car was made after 1996, it probably does. Google your car make, model and "OBD-II" and see what comes back.

        • @Agret: Sorry perhaps a misunderstanding, but don't you think the comment still stands. Thought it was obvious to find out this type of information you would need to type in to google:

<make> <model> (OBD OR OBD2 OR OBD II)

or some variation on the above, perhaps including/excluding year of manufacture based on quality of results. There wouldn't be a single repository with details of all makes and models compliant to the various OBD protocols… but then who knows perhaps www.whatsmyobd.com is being set up as we speak!

        • @ccrap:

ok peeps, when I googled as above for my car specs I came across this link - a database just shy of 2200 vehicles:

          http://www.outilsobdfacile.com/vehicle-list-compatible-obd2.…

      • +7

Does this work on a Bugatti Veyron

        • +1

At 400 km/+… no time to read.

        • Yes, but like with most other vehicles you only get access to the ODB-II data, not the manufacturer specific extended data.

        • Of course it does: Just have to be standing alongside while the car is running at 3/4 max rev's in top gear.

  • I got the blue one recently off ebay. Works great in my Skoda Yeti. I bought mine as a bit of a novelty. Lots of reviews and guides to show users how to set it up properly.

  • +1

Keep in mind it most likely won't work in toyotas up to around 2005/6. They seem to use some weird JOBD protocol instead of OBD2, even though a lot of them claim too be.

    • I'm confused, do you mean it won't work in toyotas from 2005/6 and before those years, OR, it won't work from 2005/6 and after those years?

      • Before

      • +2

People claim they will work from post 1996 onwards, but a lot of Toyotas built before 2005/6 (differs on models) still don't work. YMMV, so if you have a car within these ranges maybe do a quick search for them? Just watch out as it seems to be an Australian incident only. I have a 02 rav4, which according to all the american sites should work, however it didnt, and there's a lot of Aussies if you look in the same boat. Hope this clears it up!

        • I might get lucky, I have a 2006 Toyota Kluger

        • I think in the US the cars after 1996 were required to support OBD, but in Australia that was not the case?

  • the main issue I have with this is that it cant turn off automagically (AFAIK)… :(

    • +3

Yeah these things draw about 250mA when the the car is off, so it will flatten your battery if you don't use the car often.

  • Where do you apply the coupon code?

    • You need to make an account and instead of clicking "Checkout with Paypal", click "Proceed to Checkout"

      • thanks

      • That's not true. You DO NOT need to make an account at Tmart.

I used "Checkout with PayPal" without having an account and it worked just fine.

After you sign in to PayPal you are directed back to Tmart to confirm your order where you will have the opportunity to choose shipping method and input the code.

On the PayPal page it even says "You're almost done. You will confirm your payment on TMART LIMITED."

        • +1

Sorry, I did not know that, either way, I'd feel safer knowing I put in the code before logging in to PayPal

        • -1

If you don't trust yourself to read what (if anything) you are agreeing to then that's probably a good idea.

  • Added the coupon code and it came to

    AU$6.58

EDIT: Realised it's quoted in US. OP might want to change that.

  • Tried one of these with my 2008 X-Trail, most functionality didn't work.

    • I got one from the last ozbargain special a few months ago and seemed to work ok with my 2008 xtrail petrol, using torque on android. What functions didn't work for you. is yours a diesel?

    • Hi Kapone
I got one of these of ebay for my 2007 exi and I couldnt even get bluetooth to sync. So seeing as you had some luck Can you let us know what works please ?

  • +1

Damn I paid $15 for one off ebay not long ago, guess I'll buy another one.

    • +16

That's the OzBargain spirit! How many torches do you have?

      • +2

'bout 15, thanks for showing an interest :)

  • Is this Android only, and if so what affordable phones will it work with?

    • I had thought this may work with an iPhone but someone further down the page says not possible due to problem with bluetooth stack. Havent tried myself so cant confirm.

I also believe that the majority of these low cost models may be using unlicensed tech and simply clones of the elm327, they do miss out on some of the newer features as the clones are based on older firmware (even though they attempt to spoof a newer firmware it is simply a change to the firmware version number and nothing else). http://www.ebay.com/gds/ELM327-mini-guide-Read-Before-Buying…

      • these def wont work on iphone.
but i can confirm it works on lumia 1020 (which is not an affordable phone to answer the question)

  • Bought exactly this one from Aliexpress. It shorted out itself and the car fuse. Not saying all of them are like that, maybe mine is a reject.

  • Coupon code tmart07022 does not work when I just check out with PayPal.
Glitch in the system op ?

    • The coupon is tmart0722. Sorry for make a mistake in the post.

Shipped by China Post, where as Tmart uses Hongkong Post.

Question is, do you want your order to arrive in 1-2 weeks or would you rather save US 51c and wait up to 2 months?

Not really neg worthy considering one uses a 10x better shipping service.

      • +2

What? Tmart shipping is also pretty slow. It was confirm by the rep that their normal delivery time frame is one month. Would not praise their delivery service to any extend.

PS.@skyl The (free)delivery usually takes about 1 month. Sometimes it can be quick, 2 weeks is enough; sometimes it takes more then 1 month. The average time is about 1 month.

So IF you are lucky it would be two weeks. I bought something from Tmart on the 28th of June and still no sight of it.

        • I must be super lucky then as all of my orders have arrived quick. Not just from Tmart, but anytime I've had something shipped to me by Hongkong Post.

    • +1

aliexpress… forgive me, but most from there even make Kogan look good on shipping times!

      • +12

aliexpress, where the thrill of the casino meets online retail therapy

  • +3

No idea what I just bought… but I will have a play :)

  • Any is200 owner here who have this unit? I bought one before and can never get it work!

    • +1

See comment posted earlier by cheese510! There's a few forums that'll also tell you they don't work on late 90's early 2000's Toyotas!

  • +1

Good deal, got the same adapter.

Works on late 09 Nissan Maxima and late 09 Murano.

DOES NOT WORK ON Holden 5.7L V8 Statesman.

    • What year statesman the 5.7l is a common engine. Also is this android only?

      • 2001 Stato. I suspect it won't work for any LS1 engine. Probably have more luck with the L76, LS2, L98 and LS3.

If you look at ebay listings for example, they list supported vehicles and most are clear to make no guarantee that EVEN IF your car uses OBD2, it will work.

        • can't comment for LS1, but I've used one of these clone ELM327 interfaces no problems with an L76. Requires a decent app like Dash Command to read the GM specific PIDs though.

Oh and remember to unplug when the car is turned off; some still draw power when the car is off.

  • Anyone aware of an iOS app that would connect to a bluetooth ODB|| dongle?

    • not possible as apples Bluetooth stack is not friendly with these devices, You have to get WiFi devices that work with the iPhone.

    • Yes it is possible, but only with a jailbroken iphone/iPad.

I have done it using: this device + a jailbroken iphone/iPad + DashCommand (from app store)+ roqyBT7 & roqyOBD7 (from Cydia app store)…it looks good & works great!

  • +7

Mechanics recommend not to use these items on modern cars, especially those packed with technology. Definitely not plug-and-forget.

The reason these are so cheap compared to standard OBD2 is because they are not well tested with vehicles, and no warranty that it wont fry your ECU up.

I accept the negs, but people should know this. Why plug a $5 dongle to your shiny $10,000+ car?

    • Its probably good advice, but may also be a case of "Don't use that dodgy device, we can diagnose your problem for you at just $XX per hour."

Aside from blown fuses, I'd really like to find definitive cases where these devices have actually damaged or corrupted the ECU. There is of course the major danger of someone clearing fault codes without repairing the fault and this may lead to further damage to the vehicle (especially someone selling the vehicle and attempting to hide a problem).

      • +1

I accept the negs as well but what I'm asking is for documented examples of fried ECUs with these devices.

      • I'm a DIYer as well and I choose to buy a $40 OBD2 reader (or maybe $60 if you want live data) from Amazon. I wouldnt even trust Autel brand. Well worth it because I service my 3 cars with it, and they last for years on end. First and last time I brought my cars in for a mechanic was 3 years ago, I just talk to them a lot.

Good mechanics have a much better tool, that cost them a few grands, to analyze cars. It looks like a tablet and imitate factory scan tool, so its well worth it to get him to analyze for you. I have seen people guessing and spending big bucks to fix a problem, when it was as simple as a gas cap not tightened fully (EVAP codes)

I have one of this bluetooth dongle too, which I thought was a good idea at the time I bought it.

Re clearing faults, usually it should come back up very shortly.

  • I have a 96 fairlane ghia - any way to tell if this'd work with my car? Have a coolant level and bulb out warning that are reporting false. I'd be able to turn these off with this right?

  • Bought one from here 2 months ago:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/144804

    Works fine with MY11 WRX

  • Bought one from here 2 months ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/144804

As mentioned above but neg removed by some mod
You can always find this on ebay or aliexpress or else shipped from HK, SHANGHAI, MACAU or any suburb or kiosks or stalls in any street you like in china for less than $7 so 6.58 is not cheapest and not a bargain.
Here is a better model for 6.60 aud posted from HK with ease of shopping at ebay + your 2% off, for 6.5 aud final price

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/181403894913

Waiting for another Mod to remove my Neg!
To the mod who removes negs; look mate this is called ozbargain, when something gets posted here should be a real bargain, means you will hardly find similar product near that price. I understand your point of supporting reps but this is misleading the shoppers who trust ozbargain and not fair to other sellers who keep their price always cheap and not for a short time posting here.
Ps, I will neg this later ;)

    • +4

I don't think Mod intervention is required for a Neg to be removed. Pretty sure it happens automatically if the person who left the Neg receives 5 Neg votes on their comment.

      • +1

but he's only got 2 negs?

      • +1

The neg he's talking about that was removed was his vote for the deal, not for a comment!

    • Apart from price what makes the ebay link better than this?

      http://www.tmart.com/OBD2-II-EOBD-ELM327-Bluetooth-Software-…

I've been wanting to try out Torque for a while and I think it's time.

    • WOW someone bought the whole lot off your ebay link WTF :0

    • My neg was removed too. Considering I had less than 5 negs, could ozbargain be receiving kickbacks from the company??

  • Rep - Do you have a Wifi version? Keen for the wifi model.

  • Code expired.

    • It still work, pls try again.

  • +11

    Be careful with this stuff

I got a device that looks exactly the same from this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/144804

Plugged in, played with Torgue app on Android for two days – it was OK. Did nothing special at all – just basic sensors reading.

On the third day, all of a sudden, I noticed some errors on my dashboard, and then there was a strong smell of burning electrical components and a white smoke. Pulled over and turned the ignition off. It wasn’t that easy to unplug the device – it was very hot and fused to the socket.

Here is how my OBD socket looks like today.
    http://i.share.pho.to/e267deda_o.jpeg

I’m afraid that it might cause me some troubles with the car's warranty.

PS. There’s a list of supported adapters on Torque’s web site: http://torque-bhp.com/wiki/Bluetooth_Adapters. Be careful when buying a cheap one.

    • +2

I can't up vote you enough. I don't think it's worth risking the electronics in a modern car to the sake of a $6 device.

    • Yeah, nice pic. Very UNinspirational!!!

    • plus it will drain your battery if you leave it connected without engine running.
this toy wont be so much fun when the car wont start.

  • I got this one with much of excitement. When tried to fit into the hood of my Toyota Camry 2000, found that the base is different… It mentions "DIAGONSTICS" at the top.. tried to searching for any converter.. was not sure..so still the unit is sitting inside my boot. any idea pl advise

    • Apparently it won't work with your model anyway… See Cheese 510's comment and mine!

  • Not sure what i'm doing wrong, but it's saying the coupon code (tmart07022) does not exist.

    • +2

Check your code again, it's tmart0722… not tmart07022!
But I have a funny feeling that this may have only been for the 22/07!

  • any deals on a wifi model that supports an iphone?

  • Grabbed the last deal but alas didn't work with my 04 Corolla. INstalls all fine but won't send any data iin the right protocols. Handy to keep for next car. :-)

    • Once again… Early 2000's Toyota!!!

  • Love when an official store rep gets his own coupon code wrong. Big ups for confidence!

    • What are you talking about?

The code is correct. Used it yesterday when deal was first posted.

      • Check the revisions.. was 07022 in the description, erroneous. Rep fixed it yesterday, and now works again. Happy days!

    • Que? Code at top says "tmart0722"

      • Store Rep proof-read and fixed it yesterday, and now works.
