  • Good stuff :) Ftr dl size is 70mb

Version is 2 gaps old (came out in late 2011) but works fine on Windows 8.1

  • yeah good stuff even not the latest version.

  • +2

reminds me of the CD cover discs that I used to get with APC magazine and PC Authority. They used to give you a version that's a couple of generations old, then try and upsell you the latest.

Still, free is free. Can't complain about that.

  • where is the download link?
    http://www.acdsee.com/en/support/acdsee-pro-5

this dont have the original file

  • Used this back in the day when the pro version came free on disc with my Pentax Optio S micro camera - great photo management utility

  • +2

Is this better than Irfanview or Picasa? Haven't used ACDsee since 90s

    • +1

Much larger and more features than than Irfanview. Some may say bloated but I don't use a 32Gb HDD anymore so it doesn't bother me. It's also slower than Irfanview but not enough to stop me using it.

    • Same.

I remember it being really good but then it started to get bloated. I use Picasa now. Light and simple.

  • +3

Back to DOS, it was the first and best software to watch pictures. But nowadays…

    • +1

      What, not CShow?

  • +4

i have not heard of this program in probably 8 years!

  • +6

I wonder if they have xtree gold for free too!

    • If you have a hankering for xtree, try ZtreeWin. Free for 30 days, US$29.95 for the license. I've been using it since I upgraded from Win3.1 and xtree wouldn't work any more. In all that time I've had to pay twice - for V1 and then for V2.

    • +4

I had the biggest PC boner as a kid for Xtree Gold.
Best damn disk management app I ever used. (I feel old).
Ahh.. I miss hearing my clunky 40mb MFM HDD load up and having to park the drive prior to turning it off.
      :)

      • It wasn't very good with long filenames though.. It was designed for 8.3 format.

    • +1

Total Commander is what fans of old file managers seem to be using nowdays.

  • +5
  • Used it way back in the 90s when there were not many alternatives. It used to be light weight and straightforward to use. Hope it still is, there are just so many other imaging softwares out there.

  • Not accepting the license key.
    Tried 2 different license keys.

    • Ok got it. You have to create an account. Then use the unlock code to get a license key. Talk about jumping through hoops. But you cant argue with free i guess.

    Required information …
    Title:
    Surname:
    Lastname:
    email:

I guess the person creating the form is not from the Western Hemisphere: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surname

  • I'm confused. It says Surname and then it says Lastname. They're the same thing.

I assume you actually put your first name where it says surname.

    • Nah put your first name where is says lastname.
As per the comment above yours, the person that made the form is probably from an Asian country where surname is first, then given name is last.

      • I beg to differ i think where it has Surname is meant to be Firstname some one just stuffed up that's all. It's not an asian form either since it would be in an asian language otherwise.

        • +1

Surname is universal and is a synonym for family name, which is also universal.
          Given name is universal.
Western countries (I'm unsure if it's all) write their names as [given name] [surname] and as such refer to their surname as their lastname.
Some countries (mostly Asian ones) write their names as [surname] [given name] and as such refer to their given name as lastname.

I didn't say the form was for Asian people, I said that the person that made the form is probably from an Asian country.

    • +2

      I assumed you'd just make up a name …

    Very nice;

A 'friend' told me a technique they have leveraged in the past - purely to use the viewing capabilities of the product…

effectively download ACDSee Pro and install it as a trial, then extract from the plugins directory the

    ID_DCRaw.apl / IDE_JP2.apl / Raw Defaults contents.

    Uninstall ACDSee Pro;

Then install ACDSee Free, add the plugins from above, and you can then view raw and jpeg2000 files from the free viewer version (which is normally not available).

  • +2

ACDSee- those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end.

  • signed up but no email, how long does it take?

  • So how long as you supposed to wait to get the key in email after requesting the key and then creating the Acdsee account?. Because i've waited for 40 minutes and so far nothing.

    • I haven't received any emails either, tried with two different addresses many hours ago.

    • I haven't received anything either

  • +1

ahh… reminds me of the jpg dialup years

  • +1

Well all i can say is i requested a key, setup up an Acdsee account with the same email address and i did not get any key.

  • Would use it for selective mass conversions from tiff <-> jpg. Infraview and Picassa can't do that. Can someone suggest any other free multi-purpose picture management program that can?

  • -7

pro version 5 was released 3 years ago, why bother?

    • Are the differences between 5 and 7 worth US$65 (or US$200 after 14/8) to everyone?

      • Can't answer your question, but get this free offer now, then from within your acdID account you can update to v7 for US$59.99. :)

Edit: It says US$59.99 in the portal, but once you click through to the checkout it's actually US$59.96. Bargain! :)

  • I also have an old version of ACDSee on my HDD, v2.4 from 1998. It was the last pure viewer version, before they started adding in extras. It still works on Win 7 is used in Win98 compatability mode. It was the fastest program at loading Jpeg files, and quite customizable.

Good freeware alternatives are XnView and FastStone Image Viewer. There is a new 64 bit version of XnView available - http://www.xnview.com/en/xnviewmp/ It can eve display .dds texture files (used in some games like Skyrim).

    • Yep 2.4 was great; Try the acdfree technique above and your viewer will be modern.

  • I've also not yet rec'd a key (after hours!)

Is there any chance the key issued is -same- for all, lucky enough to get one?

    • +1

I filled in my details last night and didn't get a key, so I tried it again. Didn't get a key.

Then I checked my spam folder and saw two emails, both with different keys. So nope, the key isn't the same for all. And check your spam folder. :)

      • This. Also found it in my Junk folder.

        • I tried three different email addresses with three different email servers, but nothing's arrived. Not even in the junk mail folder. I think they just don't like me.

          EDIT:
I just tried again, and now a Captcha style box shows up asking me to enter the answer to a simple maths problem. This box didn't show up yesterday, but clicking Submit still took me to a "wait for your email" page. Maybe their system was OzBargained at the time so the captcha box wasn't loading for everybody. Seems to be working now.

        • @greenie4242:
Yeah, I did the math too. 5*7=

  • +1

On the http://acdid.acdsee.com/ site, I keep getting the following error "The License Key or Unlock Code you have entered is invalid or has already been used. Please try again." Have tried multiple unlock codes. Anyone else had that issue?

    • +1

I'm getting this too :( how do i fix it without using piratebay™?

    • +1

Same here. None of the codes are working.

  • Can I withdraw my + ? the deal is non-existent…

    • I just tried again, and now a Captcha style box shows up asking me to enter the answer to a simple maths problem. This box didn't show up yesterday, but clicking Submit still took me to a "wait for your email" page. Maybe their system was OzBargained at the time so the captcha box wasn't loading for everybody. Seems to be working now. When I tried again today, the code arrived in my inbox within a few seconds.

      • +1

This is working for me just for today too. it is generating a code after the captcha prompt.
The show stopper however is that once obtained, none of the unlock codes have worked.

        • My unlock codes I received don't work either, but maybe a bit more time is necessary for them to be registered on the system. Very tedious system, at least three servers involved.

I remember some of the old *nix boxes I dealt with at work would take 10-15 minutes to register a password change, as there was a queue of commands waiting for it to process. If you changed your password, you couldn't login at all until the change was accepted. It may be the same here. I'll try again in half an hour.

  • +1

The License Key or Unlock Code you have entered is invalid or has already been used. Please try again.
Been a couple of hours now.
    I think its borked?

  • +1

The code does not work for me. Tried two. It is a spam I think!

  • I've got an "invalid" code now, I'll wait a while, maybe it would work if I used it on this - http://www.tucows.com/preview/1294481/ACDSee-Pro-5

  • +2

Finally got it to work after about 5 different email accounts and 5 different unlock codes, I used https://www.guerrillamail.com to generate temporary throw away emails.

    • +1

Three attempts got me a working code so it's still active, just somewhat broken.
I found the easiest way was to have the offer open in one tab, your acdID open in another and Guerilla Mail in a third.
The acdID page doesn't seem to prohibit multiple unlock attempts and you can use the back button to return to the offer page & change the email address as the captcha seems to be static.

    • +1

I've got a valid one using guerrillamail the second time. Thanks!

    • Clearly there's too much effort to get this deal. And pretty much Picasa or Irfanview is better than this paid product.

  • Persistence with the guerrilla mail pays off in the end. Worth the effort. Love this software and would have purchased it YEARS ago had the price been more reasonable. GREAT to have it now full registered!
