I bought the kit from DX.com. While still waiting for delivery, I found FocalPrice is currently having a similar kit for USD$8.99/AUD$9.61 delivered (25% off). They look the same, and comes with the cut-out cardboard, lens, elastic band and the magnet. No NFC.

  • Bought one…let see how good VR is, I always wonder.

    • +1

Please don't base how good VR is just off using one of these

    • +5

Indeed. Rather than how good VR is, Google Cardboard is supposed to show how cheap VR can be.

So if Mark Zuckerberg was an OZbargainer he could have saved $2 billion. Gotta be the deal of the day.

I can't wait for occurs rift to be released though :P I got a chance to try it (first dev version) at last year's PAX and it was quite amazing :D

        • @koreainhyuk: Oculus*

        • Agreed, I tried it at E3 this year and it totally exceeded my expectations! Personally I'm waiting for Project Morpheus for PS4 though :)

        • @BrownSubmarine:
Hey he did better than me. I've always seen it as occult rift :\

        • @BrownSubmarine: Haha stupid autocorrect :P

  • This is a fairly cheap and low-tech product so not such a big risk, but what are FocalPrice like as a store?

I've never used them; quick google search suggests it's a pretty mixed service.

  • Just watch the videos, it's a really great experience for a fraction of the price.

Says ships in 2-3 days (which beats DX's ~7 days)
But where is it shipping from? If all their stock is in China, you could still be waiting a month.
On low-priced items, worldwide free shipping is normally an indication its coming from asia.

Edit: just checked, estimated shipping time to Aus is 20-25 days.

  • Bought one, better have VR porn!

if not just dress the wife in cardboard

  • +9

    cheaper on aliexpress

    • With NFC Tags too.

      • Not sure which one you saw with NFC?

    • +1

i like how someone posts "found it cheaper on aliexpress" and then you go to the sales history and see the list of Aus sales

FYI, anybody considering buying the DK2 kit for Occulus, do not be fooled into thinking it is only $350 US.

It's actually $350 US plus $75 US shipping plus GST

    So it's actually $515 AUD

    • why would you add GST? Its under $1000aud

      • +6

they bulk shipped the rifts in for AU distribution. therefore they are paying GST to import, and are passing the GST fee on to the consumers.
the real question is why are they charging $75 postage, considering they are being posted from within Aus.

        • They would be covering the postage to Australia, then the local on top. ie. it has to get here first. Plus a little bit of leeway.

I received mine yesterday. I'd pay the extra for the "next model" up… Having said that I'm waiting for the DodoCase one to arrive…

  • Looks to be even cheaper here though I can't vouch for product/seller quality/delivery.

  • $14 delievered for AUS stock from Ebay:

No feedback yet but you could always pay through Paypal and refund if things don't go well.

  • And here i thought texting whilst walking can be dangerous.

Gonna be a few skittled juvies resulting from this product.

I checked above two other sources.

Ebay one doesn't include NFC tag, but Aliexpress one has it.
Not sure about it on focalprice.

For those with 3D printers, run to Daiso now! $8.40!

Is it just me that thinks this is an amazing yet simple idea that Google came up with? With smartphones having the power of a laptop with insane PPI displays they're begging to be used to their full potential.

The only thing I'd think of is to somehow incorporate a battery pack for the inevitable power drain.

  • Sorry so be a noob but can anyone explain what this is for? Thanks!

    • +1

Virtual reality for android devices using apps including google earth. Havent tried it yet, but looks and sounds pretty cool.
Search for "google cardboard" for more info

  • Double post

  • I can't really see these as anything but a waste of time let alone money if you're expecting a "VR experience" … however as an (admittedly awful looking to anyone watching you) way to watch video on a screen that you percieve as enormous it doesn't seem so bad.

    • yeah, but its a quick, easy, cheap way to test the water.
i havent even got mine yet, but i've been going 'magic eye' on some downloaded demos in anticipation.
looking up in 'windy day' was amazing, even though i wasnt experiencing it anywhere near properly.

    • Watching TV is a waste of time too most of the time…doesn't stop me

  • What black magic is this?

    • *brown corrugated magic

Focalprice are rubbish. They sell second hand or used items as new. Bought once and never again. Bought an iphone cable off then awhile ago and it came with rusted ends.

  • I had about $20 in credit on dx so I went for this version: http://deals.dx.com/team.php?id=6953

rubber/plastic version with a head strap.

    Looks much better, can't wait!

Is this the future? wearing cardboard on ya head.

    • The future means tin foil helmet as well

  • Looks like it has cut its price to $7.49 due to competition.

  • So… has it arrived yet and first impressions. Is it practical to operate without the NFC bit, and any good content?
