Glad I could help! Extra cables always come in handy too :)

Actually, no, no they don't.. i've been trying to get rid of my problem..

        https://farm7.staticflickr.com/6069/6108494202_879a7c5426_b.…

        • Nice stash haha they might be helpful one day. I am always looking for those damn lightning pin adapters and micro usb to usb cables for my devices!

        • I recommend storing them in zip lock bags. It takes up less space and prevents cables from becoming tangled.

        • @mathew42: I use cable ties.. 1000 ties for $10 from msy

        • One for each cable.

Good opportunity to use my $20 Woolworths Wish Card. Thanks!

Thanks. Got one for the other TV in the other room. lol

  • +3

I presume this means that people who missed out can get
    The last of us $50
    Diablo $60
    Destiny $60

    as well

    • Correct on Diablo at least. Just did it.

    • Humm do you think Destiny is worth buying now; or waiting to see if a similar price walk in at Big W Target etc on release day?

  • Noob question time. Are there any benefits from having Chromecast over having a Samsung Smart TV already, are there any added benefits? Or just it just make any TV a smart TV?

    • +1

Ive used a smart tv with the youtube app and it works great.

Chromecast can stream much more, the screen of the tablet/phone and/or webpage of the chrome browser tab.
I can literally watch anything flash whatever on the tv easily.

I think most smart tv browers are terrible.

  • Sorry noob question. Can I use this to stream movies from my server?

    • Yes. 720p and some 1080p depending on bitrate etc…

Remember it's wifi so it can be limited.

      • Thanks. Will try it out when it arrives :)

    • Works great with plex but as mentioned by Turd It does depend on your network because the chromecast is wifi only. That said, I have a decent 802.11n router and I can stream 1080p with the maximum birtate setting in plex with no issues.

      • For Wired Cast, via chromecast app Roku 3 all the way.

  • Lol @ the reviews

  • +1

It is not great. Lag can be be expected.
I am still at loss why this is rated so high. This needs more development
Having said that the price is good for those who still wants it.

    • -1

How bad is the lag? Is the device useable without excvesive frustration occurin

      • +2

Depends on what you are using it for…

Casting youtube, plex, ect…. It takes a few seconds for playback to start, but once it does it is very smooth.

Casting phone screen… Extremely smooth and responsive.. only a slight delay that is noticeable… I get pretty much the same experience on my note 3 as this > http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/07/10/hands-on-video-andro…

Casting from google chrome browser… this can have a bit of a delay… I'd say roughly 1 second… Since audio comes out the TV it doesn't really impact watching videos in the browser, but it is noticeable when scrolling through pages.

For what i use it for I think the chromecast is great…

        • You can decrease the cast quality if you have lag issues.

  • Awesome. I was going to pick one up for $44.10 but I was putting it off because I need a new router too.

  • What does it even do?

    • +10

Living up to you name? lol. Click the link there is an overview

    • Have a detailed link below on what it does.

I bought a Chromecast from a similar DSE sale.

I use it for my kitchen television - it's not large, and I feel a large box would be a bit out of place.

The Chromecast doesn't really do anything by itself. You need phone, tablet or laptop to "cast" the app to the Chromecast, which displays the content on your TV. This is not a mirror - it turns your phone into the controls, while the TV shows the actual content. This means it really needs to be supported on an app by app basis, and so only select apps will work. That said, there is the ability to mirror your device for some phones.

I use it primarily for Plex. If you use Plex, and want to be able to easily your content onto a TV that has decent access to WiFi, this is a cheap and easy way. It works great, you use the phone to set up what you're watching, but after that the Chromecast can handle the lifting. You can even connect your phone back up later and pause or stop the video, so you can come back to it later. Recommended if you use Plex or have a particular app to use it with, otherwise it's more just a momentary novelty.

  • -1

can you use Chromecast as a remote control, like browse through local TV channels?

    • +1

      No

  • You can stream your local videos to the Chromecast if the Chrome browser on your computer supports the file type. In my tests, I've been able to stream the most common file types like mp4, m4v, avi and mpeg. While mkv files display the picture, there's no audio :(

streaming from youtube easy as hell.

The obvious extension of this is that you can stream a webpage to your HDTV via Chromecast. To do this, just open the site you want in a new tab and click the Cast this tab button

Another interesting thing you can do is send your entire desktop to the big screen. To mirror your full desktop click the small down arrow and then click the experimental option to cast your entire screen. Because this is still an experimental feature, it doesn't support audio.

I just love streaming videos from my phone onto the TV in seconds (I use torrents on my phone and dont have to transfer them off the microSD anymore just watch then delete c:)

I wish I had more TVs to take advantage of this deal :P

  • +2

I had one of these but found Samsung Smart Tv was much better - from the youtube app to streaming movies from the PC. The Chromecast tended to lag. YMMV

or if you have no need for a USB cable, here are some ideas for other low value items you can add to your order, eg. below items are all under $3:

Caselogic Neoprene USB stick pouch with keyring Black
    DICK SMITH In-Ear Earhooks Black
    HPM 2m Extension Lead R2702

    • Thanks. Got the 2M power extension cable. With the discount, brought the total to $41.98

  • +1

I remember reading a review that said streaming movies from the browser is a bit laggy.

  • +1

I got this in the previous deal for DS.

Dont suggest you get this if you have a Apple devices… Andriod yes. IF you have Apple, go for the Apple TV instead.

Also, the Laptop chromecasting is so laggy I pretty much gave up on it.

Oher than that, just think of your uses before you buy.

  • +5

I bought one last time… not sure why to be honest. I probably should've done more research beforehand but I went head first, ozbargain style.

I don't really have any use for it to be honest.

It's more of an add-on than a replacement for any device for me.
It doesn't handle local content well - Plex/LocalCast etc are not great for me seeing as my content is on a dumb NAS.

Netflix didn't perform that great for me either.
I've a HTPC and the Chromecast in the one TV and the HTPC buffers about 10x faster - allbeit, the HTPC is ethernet and the CC is Wifi.

Having a laptop on my knee and casting that onto the TV didn't really impress me when I can just hook the laptop up to the TV and use a wireless keyboard/mouse and actually use it directly on the TV.

    • exactly my setup

    • I used to run a HTPC but hated having to use a wireless keyboard in the living room - just too bulky.

I now have a Roku 3 via wireless connection mainly for Plex and Netflix. Streaming is seamless with an easy to use remote. (HTPC made into a Plex fileserver)

Picked up the 75" Samsung from JB recently so moving the old 46" into the bedroom and am interested in getting a CC for it rather than shelling out $100 on another Roku.

Bedroom is a bit further away from the router so hoping it doesn't have any streaming issues over wireless. I kinda know I will be disappointed in it compared to the Roku but it is what it is…

  • What about watching catch up tv like Iview or SBS, do they support this?

    • +1

Not yet but iView say they'll support it soon. I'd imagine others will follow eventually. BBC iPlayer works if you are "in the UK".

If you've got the right sort of phone you can cast your entire phone screen, so you can watch anything that you can watch on your phone. Works pretty well. https://support.google.com/chromecast/answer/6059461?hl=en-A…

You can also stream from a Chrome browser window.

  • I wanted to get 2 chromecasts….

it turns out to be cheaper if I put through individual orders.

    Thanks OP.

  • Any cheap AAA eneloop deals?

  • Thanks

  • Says Invalid code!

  • Deleted

  • still works, just ordered another chromecast & cable..
checkout as guest (not as logged in user)

  • +1

I followed OP's instructions and got the same price - $40.50 delivered on the DSE order screen, however I was charged $50.50 on my Paypal account.

I had to phone up and get a $10 refund (pending - funny how charges to your account are instantly done, but refunds take 2-3 working days).

Anyway if you paid by Paypal make sure you were charged the correct amount.

    • You need to re-ender the code if you are paying with paypal.

Have put an order in 5min ago, already got an e-mail advising that it has been posted.
Somehow it didn't had the USB cable in the shipping order.

      • Mine didn't require any additional entering. Just checked and it showed my discount code and Gift Card for $30 discount. Chromecast and USb cable for $20.50 delivered! :)

(Got my Gift Card because I took out Woolworths Travel Insurance for a trip the overseas, unexpected bonus!)

MY USB cable has been marked as posted, but not my Chromecast :(

  • worked for me

  • Does anyone know if I can use Chromecast to stream movies from my NAS via wireless network as well as from my wireless Bluray player to my projector?

  • +1

    FWIW -

Chromecast for play audio is my main use.

I have the chromecast plugged directly into my amp (Pioneer VSX-826). When I want to listen to music, fire up the amp, use the android to select the songs and play away. Can adjust the volume on my android which is handy when being yelled at.

Preferred android app is UPnPlay but also use LocalCast (has ads). Both apps take music from the Android or my N40L running WHS-2011 with Serviio.

I used to stream to WDTV live under android control but that was another box to turn/off.

I play videos from the N40L and while it takes a couple of secs to start, plays well. The fast forward / rewind not as good as the WDTV but we get by.

Grabbed a 2nd chromecast for the downstairs rumpus area too!

    Both on the $39 deals.

  • Hi

Noob question…will this work with ANY HD TV? specifically an LG (not a smart TV) - its for my inlaws, they actually bought a LG dongle which was meant to work for their TV so they could stream videos etc from their galaxy table using WIFI however it wouldnt work.

I am assuming this should work though?

I have looked on the Chromecast website and it doesnt specifically state if it will work/not work with certain DH/brand TV's so I can only imagine it will work on ANY HD TV???

    • It should work with ANY HD TV that has an HDMI port.

  • +1

It 'should' work. TV needs a HDMI input which I'm sure it does have.

You will need to be sure the wifi signal can get to the Chromecast at the TV with sufficient signal.

Have you checked there is good wifi signal at the TV?

    • Thanks Phila,

It certainly has HDMI slots its only a few years old. I have not checked the WIFI signal as my inlaws live a fair way away so I will ask them to test is near their TV. I guess they can just buy it and if it doesnt work hopefully they can take it back for a refund

      • +1

Get them to try the tablet using Wi-Fi at the TV, adjacent to where the HDMI port where the Chromecast will go and see if the tablet works fine playing videos.

        • Thanks, I have emailed and ask them to try watching a youtube video or something. I know from connecting to their WIFI before and it works fine in the living room so should be ok

  • +1

For those wondering if the Chromecast works ok with iOS devices, the short answer is yes. The long answer is with certain apps, I have had success with GoodPlayer and Plex, both paid apps, connected to my NAS via SMB(Goodplayer) and Plex Server itself.

There are other iOS apps that connect to your Chromecast with specific content, there's a list here: https://www.google.com/chrome/devices/chromecast/apps.html

Crackle works really well, played a full movie the other night.

I've had more success with GoodPlayer rather than Plex recently, I tend to have a lot of lag in starting up movies through Plex, as they're transcoded on my NAS(Plex Server) and it's an older HP Microserver. It tends to struggle a bit with the media agent for Plex and transcoding at the same time.

I was running Serviio on my NAS, but was having heaps of issues with GoodPlayer finding the Chromecast to connect to, but recently it's far better… Serviio was performing much better than Plex I found, pre-Chromecast, mainly because I've got 8TB+ of media and Serviio handled it better.

tl;dr: GoodPlayer and Plex work on iOS devices connecting to a Chromecast with files from a NAS.

Appreciate this post klevster - esp. the Executive Summary ;)

  • Grabbed one, thanks.

  • For those wondering if they need Chromecast, Read This first.

  • Listening to music on my chromecast atm and browsing on ozb

  • The games are not posted, the code gives $10 off but still get $5 postage cost when I just went to order.

  • dicksmith has only processed and sent the usb cable….
they sent me 2 emails today, 1 of them was an invoice saying that i paid $11.50 for a USB cable and no mention of the chromecast. The second saying that they have sent the USB cable.

Both the online email help and the customer service number is not working???
anyone else have the same problem?

    • I got an order acknowledgement for both the chromecast and USB cable, ~5m after ordering.
Then an invoice for just the chromecast, ~4 hours later.
Then a shipping notice for just the chromecast ~1 day after ordering.
Then an invoice for the USB cable ~12 hours after that.
I haven't received a shipping notice for the USB cable, yet.

It would appear they are split shipping / invoicing.

      • Picked up mine today from the post office after Star track tried to deliver but no one was home. The Chrome cast and the USB cable were in 2 separate packages.

  • yeh, both here today. Now to figure running 2 together.
