  • Hmm interesting, still prefer cash back on eBay and Apple store though.

  • +3

Yeah, if you equate Qantas points at 1c per point, it works out to be about 2%, same as CashRewards :)

    • Even more if you fly in J/F.

    • +4

I have the extension installed on chrome.
I don't do my proper searches on it though, rather just search random words to get my points when it's slow going at work.

      • +4

same, installed it on chrome, searched 'qantas', 'flights', and similar, then uninstalled… all that to get points in another icon for the million points giveaway!

    • Does it still give you points? Nowadays it does nothing when I make searches.

      • Yep, it's still working for me.
You can only earn points for something you haven't already searched for in the month.

    • +8

You know how it says, if you've been barred (for making fake searches) don't worry, it's just a temporary thing?

I got permanently rejected by the toolbar because I kept searching phrases like "what idiot uses Bing", "the retards that designed bing lol", "bing is a piece of Sh$T". LOL.

Sweet. Prefer to accumulate QFF over Velocity so this would be good. If I'm going to buy something, depending on the cashback via cashback sites, always happy to log in and use them.

I'm confused, how do I earn Qantas points from shopping on iTunes?

    • -1

Links to the Apple Online Store products do not earn Qantas Points. iTUNES gift cards sold on the Apple Online Store are not eligible for Qantas Points. Links to iTUNES Gifts on the desktop or within iOS, however, are eligible for Qantas Points.

You just follow the link to a song etc and if you buy it on ios or desktop you get points

      • I guess what I'm struggling with is how does it know my QFF number if I buy it on my iPhone. I tried following links but it led to an iTunes landing page (which for some reason wouldn't open iTunes on my PC).

  • When using eBay with cash rewards can we get cash + points?

    • I doubt it. From the look of it, it's also going through affiliate networks, and they are only going to pay the last referral — so it's either the cashback site or Qantas, but not both.

However with the volume of sales Qantas can potentially push through, they might be able to negotiate better commission rate with the retailers. It's a bit sad with the cashback site though — they already operate on tiny margin and now they are competing with companies with much bigger budget.

  • I wonder if this would still work if you use david jones gift cards on the online store?

So this will double up with ANZ FF Card purachse earning as well?

Ebay Purchase: AMEX Platinum + Qantas Points online mall = 3.5 points per dollar?

    • Yes.

    • Yes, if you're using a Qantas-linked credit card, you will earn Qantas Points as you usually would with that credit card. If you've visited the Online Mall and purchased with a retailer on that credit card, you'll also earn Qantas Points specified with that retailer.

  • Dammmmm made a big purchase on eBay yesterday, anyone know if you can claim points from recent purchases by any chance?

    • +2

No, we are unable to retrospectively allocate Qantas Points if you did not login through the Online Mall. You must always visit Online Mall first, login and click on the ‘Shop Now' button so that cookies can track your visit and we can allocate Qantas Points.

  • 2% cashback with cashrewards is better…

spend $750 on eBay can earn 1500 points = $10 Rewards

spend $750 on eBay can earn 2% cahback = $15 Rewards

    • +3

Well no, I'm happy to buy Qantas Points off you at 1c per point if you get in touch :)

      • Pity we cant sell or transfer them for that price… that is actually quite good and i would have taken you up on it :)

        • Feel free to PM me to discuss :)

    • Value of the QFF depends on where you fly from. A flight from Canberra or Sydney to Adelaide costs 12000 points + $80 (taxes etc) for both.

Now I just looked up a random date for both flights (Syd - Adelaide) $195 and $325.

For the Sydney flight 12,000 / (195-80) = 104 points per $ value. At 1500 points the value is $14.

For the Canberra flight 12,000 / (325-80) = 49 points per $ value. At 1500 points the value is $30.

Someone can tell me if my maths is wrong here.

      And 2% of $750 is $18.75 btw.

      • 2% of $750 is not $18.75, that's 2.5%

        • +1

oops your right.. bad bad maths…

      • Canberra-Adelaide is $160 (or 12,000 points + $80 = 0.0066 point/$ or $6.60 for every $1000 spend)
        Sydney to Adelaide is $139 (or 12,000 points + $38 = 0.0084 point/$ or $8.40 for every $1000 spend)
        Cash rewards is a flat 2% - so a $1000 spend is $20.

The dates of the flights are on a Wednesday (always the cheapest day to fly regardless of carrier) and dated in mid October. For comparison purpose, the saver (Red-e Deal) fare is used in calculation because it has similar terms and travel conditions as redeeming reward seats (Don't compare flex or fully flex because they have different travel conditions).

Calculation used for points value = Cost of fare (normal saver fare) - cost of tax/fee / cost of points.
        Example
        Canberra->Adelaide = $160 - $80 / 12,000 = 0.0066

        • Thanks for illustrating my point. The value depends on when you fly (I also used the Red E-Deal). The cost of the points for a flight doesn't differ compared to the price of the flights. So the higher priced the flight, the better value your points are. Which was my point compared to a cashback which is static.

Regardless of your prices or my prices, the cost is still 12,000 points to fly. Now as I have a full time job, I fly on weekends. Why would I go out of my way to fly on a weds using points when it costs the same price to fly on a convenient day and time? I'd just pay to fly on a Weds.

    • But if you spend $1000 then it's roughly $20 in qantas points AND $20 in cashback. Really depends on how much you spend and what you would spend qantas points on.

    • I'm sure everyone values QFF points differently, unless you solely use them for gift cards in which case it will be .714cpp (cents per point). That 1500 point purchase = $10.71 in gift cards.
Me personally, as someone who uses points mostly for J/F award bookings/upgrades (and the odd last minute domestic flight), I just value all points at 1.5cpp, so that 1500 point purchase = $22.5, much better than the $15 cashback.

Is cashrewards anything like Qwibble? Because Qwibble is crap and has put me off these cash rebate sites. The time involved in getting the cash back and the amount of time you have to spend having valid claims rejected and then trying to chase them up, it's just not worth the effort. Getting online points from the mall at least is pretty quick.

  • What the apple store? God damnit!… Just bought a brand new MBP 15"

If you actually work out the points/$ ratio it is almost $0.066/point. Basically a little over 0.66% cash back (when redeeming for a $100 gift-card which is currently going for 15,100 points).
So to earn $100 using Qantas FF you would need to spend $7,550 for essentially a $100 return.
    Doing a quick whip around comparison with a $7,550 spend;
    Qantas FF = $100
Velocity = $83 (at 2 points/$ - however, they do have promotions that weigh in at 4 points occasionally ($100 giftcard is 18,000 points)
    Cashrewards = $151

If you redeem on flights there is a degree of variation with this, although, generally, this is only about 10-40% more efficient in most cases (vs buying the airfare outright).

The difference is that you can put your cash rewards into a high interest online savings account (uBank maybe?) and earn interest on that amount. In one year (assuming you did nothing else) you would have a little over $160 (4% PA compound daily paid monthly). Or you could have a $100 gift-card (assuming there is not another increase on redeeming gift-cards).

    • +1

Interesting analysis but I'm not sure I understand the 10 - 40% higher efficiency vs buying the airfare outright? What exactly do you mean by that?

Gift cards are well known to be the worst way to burn QFF. If you're not redeeming for flights, then as a rule, you're not going to get great value out of QFF. However, if you use J / F flights, it can be up to $0.06 - $0.07 (i.e. 6 - 7%) depending on the route. I usually value QFF at $0.02 per point as a baseline because I figure you need to discount for the lack of liquidity, the potential for program devaluation and because you can't always get a flight when you want one.

With cash rewards, I thought I saw somewhere on the site saying that it takes a minimum of 90 days before you get credit for it. On Qwibble, I have a claim from 9 months ago that they've acknowledged is valid but I haven't seen a cent yet. I'm sounding like a broken record but I'm not particularly excited about these sites. Has anyone else had a good experience with Cashrewards or Qwibble etc.?

      • The "10%-40% more efficient" was in comparison to redeeming a gift-card vs flights (just realized i got myself muddled a bit when typing that - didn't make much sense in the last comment).
        Also realized i missed a "0" when going to point/$ - should be $0.0066 for gift-card (0.66%).

        Comparison on an Canberra-Adelaide, Sydney-Adelaide and Darwin-Brisbane
        Canberra-Adelaide is $160 (or 12,000 points + $80 = 0.0066 points/$ or $6.60 for every $1000 spend) (0% more efficient)
        Sydney to Adelaide is $139 (or 12,000 points + $38 = 0.0084 points/$ or $8.40 for every $1000 spend) (27% more efficient)
        Darwin to Brisbane is $235 (or 18,000 points + $51 = 0.0102 points/$ or $10.20 for ever $1000 spend) (54% more efficient - but generally very uncommon)
        Cash rewards is a flat 2% - so a $1000 spend is $20.

Also remember, you do not earn points when traveling on a rewards seat either… (part of the T&C).

        Example
        Canberra->Adelaide = $160 - $80 / 12,000 = 0.0066

I have used cashrewards for ebay as two other vendors (flowers and Kogan). The ebay normally clears in about 2-3 weeks from purchase to withdraw. But not much luck with Kogan or the Flowers. Guess it depends on the vendor

      • But the key question is really, would you be flying J/F if it were not for these points? If the answer is no, then this is a classic case of "spending to save money". i.e. you are purchasing just because it is "good value". If your intention is to fly J/F anyway (and only with points) then who am I to question how you use your points? That is your own choice.

If you tend to fly economy class and are happy to do so, then there is really no basis in saying that J/F flights are better value when you would not normally do so anyway. That is, if your intention is just to fly from point A to point B for the cheapest price possible.

However, compared with Coles Myer/WISH gift cards, you're redeeming cash for a shop that you know you will spend at anyway. You are not going out of your way to do your shopping. Even if you shop mostly at Aldi and only at Woolies/Coles a handful of times a year, would you really not be able to spend the amount on a gift card within the validity period?

  • Hopefully Qantas adds more shopping sites, it's a bit sparse at the moment. The Velocity site has way more. Given that I have way more points on Qantas, I'd prefer to spend on the Qantas online mall but there aren't that many interesting stores at the moment.

  • ITS LIKE VIRGIN, YOU GOTTA LOG IN AND USE THEIR SYSTEM? So annoying, wish Virgin sorted their shit out, even their online system is shit. Lol.

  • Is it possible to earn QFF points using iTunes store on mobile rather than PC? The song/album I want to buy is marked as Explicit and unfortunately my PC administrator has banned the purchase of explicit material in the iTunes preferences.

  • So checked out the Qantas Points Online Mall and noted the 5 points per $1 for shopping at DJs and DJs has the 256GB 13.3" Mac Air @ $1259 (10% off fulfilled by Dick Smith). Using my credit card that would be 6 QFF points per $1. Seems promising but details on the Air listed on DJ's page are very limited. Any risk of this being the superseded model??

  • Has anyone actually got their Online mall points yet? I've bought quite a bit on iTunes and eBay through the links but still seen nothing come through. Maybe it's like cashrewards where it can take a while?

    • I've bought something from eBay recently. I got a confirmation email the next day. The confirmation email states that the points will be credited to my account within 30 days of purchase.

      • Thanks for jogging my memory- yes I did get those emails (saw one dated 17/8) so hopefully points come in the next few days. I'm still waiting on a restaurant dining one from early August too.

        • EDIT at 3:15pm - all my Qantas Online Mall stuff from 15 August just came through in my Activity Statement (wasn't there last time I checked).
