Great as a GBA emulator/ player if that's your thing.

  • +1

    is it locked to Telstra?

    • Yes.

      • Just to clarify, is that locked to strictly Telstra or just the Telstra network?

        EDIT:

nvm, found this in the manual

        NETWORK LOCKING
This prepaid device is locked to the Telstra network. Please contact Telstra for unlocking procedures, charges may apply.

        • +1

I had a Samsung Galaxy Ace (S5830) from OW that was Telstra locked.
I think you just need to flash a new firmware to remove the lock.
          Do a bit of Googling..

        • @Draxxx:

Been doing lots of googling… see end of this comments thread. No one's found a way to unlock this as yet without having spend more money.

          EDIT:

Also, the mobile is locked to strictly Telstra. It's been found that users of providers who use Telstra's network can't get this to work with their sims.

        • @Mugsy:
$18 unlock via user Bagman on here…

  • how much is it usualy?

  • +1

Im going to assume its locked since nowhere does it say its unlocked at all?

  • Didnt waste time and bought one. But cant find size of the RAM?

    • +24

      64kb

      • +1

        Are you sure about that?

    • full specs here

  • +2

i think its ZTE T790 model, you can try this unlock code from ebay for $1.78

    • Unlock Codes for
      All Networks Worldwide
      ZTE Mobile Phone Models
      Listed in the title

      • Blade
      • V9
      • Light pro
      • Telstra Smart Touch T3020
      • 811
      • N61

No mention of T790 in title

      • i bought an unlock code for my huawei G526 hereeven when you cant find that model in the listing

        • Best to ask first as it states it's for phone models listed in the title.

        • From the same seller, unlock code for V790 is about $16. Looks to be same phone as B790/T790, just different branding.

    • +1

      Didn't work:

Your IMEI has been rejected by the cheaper ZTE server as it does not support your phone model.

The Code for your phone can be obtained from ZTE WORLDWIDE Server but that code will cost you £8.99 in total. You can look at ebay item number 331245709909.

Please advise if you are willing to pay the difference or look for a full refund.

    • +3

I have tried the $1.78 and $16 option and can confirm that only the $16 option works.

      • +1

Thanks JessZ, looks like we're all gonna have to shell out a few more $ to get this thing unlocked. Actually, the unlocking is more expensive than the phones I got (I bought two and with the $5 newsletter discount).

        • Such a bummer since you can buy another phone with that amount! I purchased another one by price matching at Officeworks anyway so I'll probably try flashing and rooting it. It's my first android phone, so this should be fun…

Anyway, the seller now has a direct link for this model, for those who are going for the pricer option.

        • @JessZ:

Thanks for the direct link… I guess the seller had an influx of demand for the T7900 from the HN sale. Looking forward to getting this stupid thing unlocked for mum and dad.

  • Added specs table.

  • -4

$13 if you sign up with the $5 voucher :)

    • +1

I thought there was a minimum spend for that.

      • +2

        Indeed, $25 min spend.

  • +8

Don't bother with this crap phone. Waste of money for any thing serious.

    • +23

Triple 0 call is pretty serious

      • +3

A Nokia feature phone would be a lot better for a backup, as the batteries last longer on those, plus less likely to break than these. You can get one that uses a micro SIM so it could be a backup for your smartphone.

        • +2

Yeah that was my thinking. Then I bought one as a backup. I forgot how awful they are after using modern smartphones LOL.

I would say don't don't do it unless you absolutely need that battery time. But if you do you can also buy SIM adapters for peanuts if it doesn't micro or nano sized.

        • @Diji1: Low end smartphones are pretty awful too. Better get at least a mid-range smartphone if you need one for actual replacement work.

These are ARMv6 (as opposed to the current ARMv7 or upcoming ARMv8 64bit), which means the architecture is already obsolete.

Plus the screens are pretty small and pixelated, so not great for reading on.

On the other hand, if you're current phone runs out of power too quickly, it may be worth getting a backup USB portable battery for around the same price.

        • @happychappy1: It's $18

        • @xywolap: have you heard of opportunity cost? It's better to just spend the money on something that is more fulfilling. Because I can guarantee that this will become junk quite quickly, due to severely outdated specs.

Sucks to those who bought five of these. That's close to $100 wasted.

I'm sure HN are laughing all the way to the bank, cos these are practically worthless.

They should be giving these away.

Every system info app I've run has stated it's a Qualcomm MSM7225a (ARMv7).

    • +12

What makes you thing people buy it for anything serious? Or even as a phone?

At $18, it has a thousand uses. e.g. a GPS tracking bug, a wifi security camera, monitor a valuable package in transit for tracking and to see if it is dropped, …

      • +1

GPS tracker - too big, battery too small (wouldn't last)

WiFi security cam - 2mp no auto focus = crap

Monitor valuable package - need to spend $$, battery life too short, just buy insurance

P.S. what can do that whatever you've got already can't do better? I'm willing to bet you've already go an FM radio.

        • +4

Yeah good point, let's use our $600+ phones as a toy.

        • +4

@plmko: Not the point. Point is that you should get the right tool to do the right job. Not waste money on half-arsed solutions that won't do the job properly on the off chance that you might need it for such a purpose.

If you want a security camera, get a proper one that has IR LEDs so it works at night, and properly.

If you want a GPS tracker, get a dedicated one that suits whatever purpose you want, preferably with decent battery battery life.

If your package is actually valuable, then pay to get some real protection, or transport it yourself if it's that important.

Like I said… right tool for the job, not a half-arsed solution.

        • +1

          @happychappy1:

Did you miss the bit where I said it is good for non-serious things? Some people like to have a bit of fun.
e.g. I'm not going to spend thousands on security because once a year, a $20 delivery goes missing. But it might be worth $18 and a little time to find out if the delivery guy really did leave it in front of the correct house.

        • @manic: I'm not talking about thousands. It's more like around $100 mark for one that has night vision capabilities (e.g., D-link).

For one that only has daytime capabilities, then it's closer to ~$30 - not much difference, but it'll do the job better.

If you're relying on the battery for these, then it wouldn't be very reliable for leaving on all day.

        • +1

          @manic:

Point taken. Only a camera to do the job properly is going to cost less than a hundred smackeroos not thousands. If you like pissing about have at it I'd rather just buy appropriate devices which this is not.

I'm picturing you running out to turn the screen on every 30 minutes so the camera works unless there's a way around this LOL.

        • +1

          @happychappy1:

          $18…

Youve spent more than $18 worth of time arguing you case, which I have to say is pretty narrow minded

      • +2

plus 24 months Manufacturers Express Warranty

  • +5

    My first android phone :')
Cheaper than my lunch yesterday, and it's good to have as a spare I guess.

    • +9

Considering your eating habits, I dare say you don't belong here :D

      • +1

We must mold this young mind

  • Damn too far away

  • Any good app to use this phone as a wifi security cam?(I know camera is only 2mp)

  • can this be upgraded to jelly bean?

    • +2

Probably not easily unless you're very good with IT.

Even the mainstream phones and tablets can be a pain to upgrade and they have support from a large user base that includes developers.

This one is an unknown phone, something that is probably going to also struggle to run anything new due to its lack of ram.

I may get one though just to use with Torque and an obdii adapter and permanently mount it in my car to view A/F ratios or something that looks 'cool'.

      • Great idea using it with Torque. Might pick one up just for that.
Anyone know if there's any other phones to consider in this price range?

        • Next android phones after this in price would be around the $40-$50 range.

      • +1

        thanks.

gonna grab one and install this while it's free: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/157039

  • Can Bagman unlock?

  • +2

Nice spare phone. I'll be using my Telstra SIM with the Long Expiry used for Google Play.

Actually this will mean I won't have to be continually swapping the SIM card in and out of the device.

  • +2

Impressive, with GPS support and everything.

    • It's built into the chipset.

      • Still though. Technology is become so much cheaper in recent years.

  • +4

Nice! Black also available for $18: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/telstra-pre-paid-pulse-mobile…

Perfect purely to use as SONOS controllers or as play things for kids! I use an old phone in the workshop to test audio gear when I don't want to risk using my good phone and the list of other 'sacrificial' uses is endless. OBDII diagnostics, looking up wiring diagrams, taking photos/videos of stuff, Googling etc. etc.

    • +3

Thanks grabbed one of these for my son :) hopefully he won't care it's not an iPhone….too bad if he does! Lol

  • Buy with this http://www.harveynorman.com.au/telstra-roamer-116a-pre-paid-… for $25 pickup both by using the $5 discount coupon.

    • Roamers' been $10 at Coles in the past.

  • +1

bought 2 for $31, thanks op!

    • +1

Same here. Love the $5 discount!

  • How does this compare to the y201? Would it suffice as a plex remote?

    • Should be comparable to the y201 AFAIK.

  • Hey guys, i cant seem to find it, can someone tell me what's the code for the $5 discount

  • Thanks Kamoi,
always comes up with an error when i try sign up for it, must have expired.

    • Get a new Gmail account, and try to sign up again.

      • +1

Use hushmail… they delete after a few weeks of inactivity. Or create a sub-email address and delete that afterwards.

  • I have one myself-the screen isn't that sharp as it's got a low PPI.

The camera does OK for me.

  • I have tried 3 email accounts, and 3 different browsers, and i'm always getting "unexpected error try again later
    "

    • +3

I'll try get you a code. Check your inbox in a few minutes.

      • Have you managed to get a code? I haven't received one after 30 mins

  • Should be ok as a cheap wifi hotspot if they can be unlocked for a couple of $.

    • Only problem is a real Telstra Wifi Hotspot that is much faster (21mbps HSPA+) is pretty much exactly the same price ($19) at Australia Post.

And that comes with 1GB of data.

  • Need a gps for the van this might be the winner as I have an application that downloads Google maps offline use.

    • Samsung phones come with Navigon for free in case you didn't know.

      • +2

        Never seen one for$18.

      • Amazing info that Luke.. rushing to hn with my $18 now.

      • Navigator is a free offline maps application with voice navigation. So it will be useful and if not then a long term pre paid and download google maps and away you go.

I find that a dedicated sat nav is hard to go to whwn you have a capable handset to do this and more.

  • For a dumb question, but I do not know, is this phone G3 ? As I have heard a whisper G2 is to be shut down soon. Thanks.

    • +1

I think the top line on the listed specs here gives a good clue 3G UMTS 850, 2100 MHz with 7.2Mbps data (HSDPA)

    • +2

2G is to be shut down by Telstra only in 20(15??). Its confirmed by Telstra on their website, not a whisper

  • Has anyone ordered using for 'delivery' option (which seems to work) even though it states 'pickup in-store' only?

    • yer im worried about that….i ordered 2 even though it said pick up in store~

      • I'm thinking of ordering now & doing a live chat tomorrow to see if they will put my order through.

        • It says 1 prepaid phone per person.

Don't be surprised if it gets cancelled.

        • @happychappy1:

Umm, it says limit of 5 per person…
"Limit of 5 Pre-Paid Phones per Customer"

        • White says limit of 5, black says limit of 1.

        • +7

@kamoi: How many for asians then?

    • I had mine delivered today. Works like a champ. Amazing for the price.

  • Be prepared for: "Please be advised that this is a refund confirmation for your online order. While we are sorry to hear that the purchased goods were not suitable for you, we would like to thank you for your business and look forward to future transactions with you."
