I'm thinking of using this as a 'Gym' phone.

Put a microSD card full of music - if someone gets one tomorrow can you let me know what the audio quality is like?

    • +5

You must be new at this.
      Buy now, ask questions later.

      • +3

Yeah… I guess I'll find out for myself - Ordered.

Anyone know if custom ROMs are available, or at least some way to root it?

  • Has anyone that bought this phone been able to unlock it?

  • Does it come with credit?

    • Yep, $10 with the sim. Gonna use it as Play Store credit. :P

EDIT: Scratch that, doesn't count as credit.

  • Wanted a GPS speedometer for the car (around $70-150) this should do the job nicely :)

    Thanks OP :)

I received my order already. Personally delivered by a HN staff member… on a Sunday morning. I don't know what I did to earn such special treatment, but I'm impressed!

Now what do I do with these things :D

    • Impressive!

    • So they do deliver even though it stated in-store pickup only. That's good news.

  • Went to a store and bought one. Thanks OP.
Now try to figure out what to do with it….

I bought the last one in Forster. I am building a temperature logger that sends SMS alerts. Initially I was using a Raspberry Pi but this is half the price, has a screen, a back up battery, wifi, a speaker and it can send sms's. It's Bluetooth should be able to talk to a Pi or an Arduino board. Fantastic!

  • Has anyone been successful in obtaining an unlock code

    • I'm charging mine atm so haven't tried unlocking it.

    • Looking for an unlock code as well. I'm on Telechoice so thought for sure it would work without unlocking. Darn..

      • +2

same here - (aldi mobile - telstra network) and don't work, i try the cheap ebay one from above (wont pay $16 to unlock) will let you know how it goes

  • Thanks op. Bought one for the daughter for her first smartphone, and one for the hubby who is a welder, can take this phone to work instead of good phone. Ended up going back and got another one, just because, na, have as another backup for the welder.

the unlock is not looking good recommend no purchase until oz bargain members find a way to unlock. the phone is cheap because telstra charge a fortune for calls

    • I agree. But I am pretty sure most people won't use it as a phone.

    • Well, if the purchaser has a use for it other than a mobile phone or anything that requires a 3G connection (e.g. mini tablet, GPS, kid's toy, etc), $18 ain't bad for an android powered device.

But it would be good if we can unlock the damn thing. I was hoping this would be a cheap phone for mum and dad to use on a cheap Telstra or Vodafone network provider as they want to move from Optus. Anyway, I'll still have a use for it if it's not unlocked. Pity it's locked to Testra and not just the telstra network like the manual says.

  • ordered 2 white ones online last night and picked up from Campbelltown store today. Phone comes with $10 pre-paid and for $15.50 each only complaint I got is that I can't use Aldi SIM on it. Would like to know if anyone able to unlock it.
There are still 4 on display in the store, they are showing none in stock online so call the store first if you want one.

You could wait 6 months and pay $27.50 through Telstra :)

This could come out of your credit, which can be got at a discount through a cheap SIM.

Or, it could already be old enough, and it'll cost $27.50 now.

  • Can anyone please provide a mini review of your first impressions if you got the phone? Thank you.

    • +5

The display is bigger than I imagined, from the pictures I thought the screen was quite small but it's pretty much the same size as my iPhone 4s (yes I read the specs but was still somehow imagining it to be smaller when looking at the pictures, also I thought the capacitive touch buttons at the bottom was a part of the 3.5inch but it's not). Volume rockers were a bit stiff but overall it exceeded my expectations for such a low price.

Still in the process of unlocking it so not much I can say on the UI experience and software but screen is pretty responsive and you can definitely see the screen isn't the greatest in terms of pixels but for $18 it's a no brainer.

I'd go back to pick up another one if I can figure out how to unlock these things without spending $10+ on unlocking them. Only got this one since my partner's phone recently broke and is just looking for a temporary replacement.

rooted. bloatware removed. now if i could just get this unlocked…

    • so by rooting the phone won't unlock it?

      • sadly, no. sim still locked to telstra.

        • Could you upload a stock nandroid backup for me? Mine got an MD5 sum mismatch and now I have completely ruined it ;(

        • @Chipotleez: sorry, bricked mine too. hope someone here made a backup & share it with us.

        • +1

@hal9000: Hahahahaha, I knew it! I will go and ask on the new Dick Smith deal on the same phone thread ;)

        • +1

@Chipotleez: Will try to make you a Nandroid backup of Stock over the weekend. Did you successfully flash a Custom Recovery from somewhere - perhaps the V790 one? I have root, but not found a CWM or TWRP. (can make the backup without them, I know). More later…

        • +2

          @hal9000 @Chipotleez
Managed to dump TWRP & CWM NANDroid backups off a freshly rooted Pulse.
Keen to know if anyone has managed to install a Custom Recovery to make use of these though.
PM me for access link (as I'm not sure if they're legit to openly share).

          @piersoar:

I already posted above, but here it is again: CWM & TWRP.
          Scroll down to the bottom.

Could someone please test if the CM10.2(KK 4.2.2) rom has the 3G bug?

        • thanks mate, sending pm. i got my cwm installed thru fastboot.

        • Thanks @grab_ur_freebies !
With 2 bricks reported, and no-one confirming that your previously linked V790 material actually worked on the T790, was a bit wary. Things are looking up!!

        • Hi hal9000 / Chipotleez, could one of you please send me a Nandroid backup of Stock rom ? I bricked my phone…thanks.

        • @IceCream123:
Hahahaha just messaged @piersoar requesting a link to Nandroid Backup. I haven't checked this page much so only PM'd him now.

        • @Chipotleez:

** I have just set up an XDA Thread for discussion on this Device. Feel free to join in! **

        • @Chipotleez:
          Thanks for asking.

    • found an annoying bug: sometimes it won't connect to a known wifi. had to manually delete the wpa_supplicant.conf & restart the phone.

    • +1

How did you get it rooted?! I tried methods for the V790, with no success. Could you link me up?
      NVM:Kingo Root works! http://download.cnet.com/Kingo-Android-Root/3000-2094_4-7599…

  • Damm, theres none left in Adelaide. Anyone have any luck price matching at OW?

  • Picked one up today from HN in Preston, there are heaps still there. I also tried my Aldi sim card (telstra network) but to no avail. Hope someone has luck getting this phone unlocked!

  • I bought one of the HM website, do I need to wait for an email saying I can pick it up, or can I just walk in and pick it up?

    • yes, you do.

  • Just had a voicemail left from Mail Call couriers. They had a delivery from Harvey Norman for me, but they had to return it to them as I wasn't home…

Weird thing is that I selected the pickup option on this from a store very close by!

  • Hi there
I picked up one of these, and it is working with Boost Sim card

  • stupid question time: can I use my Telstra "contract" sim in this Pre Paid phone? I'm 3/4 way through a 24 month contract with Telsta and I have a busted phone.

    • +1

      Yes, certainly.

      • great, thanks!!!

(and thanks for the post re alpha protocol and tropico!)

  • Does anyone managed to buy 2 black ones?

      • Thanks Kamoi

It's just the web page said limit 1 per customer for black one.

        • I think they just made an error as it allows you to add up to 5 just like the white one ;)

    • I can confirms I bought two black ones too. No whites at my HN. Pity as I wanted one of each.

  • Hm… my order got delayed.

  • Has anyone that has ordered for delivery received any shipping notification/confirmation email yet?

  • Unlocked today via Telstra unlocking on 1300 720 179. Unlocking fee depends on circumstances. Use discounted $30 starter pack credit for discount on unlocking fee.

    • Was it less than $10?

      • Yeah, I wouldn't mind the details too: i.e. what was the original fee, and is the credit that comes with the phone the $30 starter pack credit?

Current cheapest unlock I've seen is:

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/331293813829?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.…

(short of getting my hands on Furious Gold)

        • Thanks Mugsy, i used them and got the code in about 12hrs, unlocked no problems.

    • Did you need to quote a certain rego or serial no over the phone to get them to take the $27.50 from the $30 starter pack?

  • I ordered 2 black ones but they called me same day and said you can only order 1, must be a racist cause i got 2 white ones ok….

    • Did you respond with n!gg@ plz? (in a Dave Chappelle kinda way?)

    • I ordered 4 (relatives overseas) and didn't have any issues.

  • Anyone getting completely messed up audio from the audio jack?

  • Any news on unlock?

  • +4

I found someone that UNLOCKS it for US$10 still looking for someone cheaper, hang in there guys

    • Who's this?

    • Is this confirmed to work? If so, I'd be happy with US$10 unlocks too.

Need to get my 28 degrees or BankWest Zero Platinum card to avoid forex fees now.

      • We REALLY shouldnt be paying any more than $5 bucks tops to unlock this thing. Bagman could do the Y201 for that when it was a new phone.

        • That's huawei. You can unlock any Huawei phone for ~$5. ZTE is a different brand and costs more.

        • Yes of course, it was to highlight a similar phone.

    • Is this online or in an actual physical store?

    • Link please?

    • Any update on this?

    • there quite a few of us - ask him/her how much for bulk unlock

  • use over wifi with skype premium at $8.90 AU for 600 minutes in AU, mobiles and landlines - cheap home phone?

  • Just did a search and came up with these guys. Entered phone details and it directed me to PayPal which priced the unlock for $5.99. Haven't tried yet as I havent picked up my 2 phones ordered. Web link:
