Thanks for sharing, does anyone know what destinations will be on sale?

I think it will be the usual cheap flight to KL then ~20$ anywhere else

could be a great chance to get cheap flights to europe similar to that other post some time ago where you use air asia to Abu Dhabi.

Sweet. Need to book next June's trip. Now to go to Cambodia or Burma…

    • +17

My mates and I went to Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia a couple of years back. Cambodia was a very close second to Sri Lanka. Angkor Wat was awesomE and everythings 100 times more fun when beers are 50 cents on every second street corner lol. Make sure you visit the killing fields and genocide museum to appreciate what that poor country and people went through. Also, make sure youre a good person and buy food for the street kids. Good for the soul.

      • +7

Lol someone negged me? Hopefully not for feeding the street kids!

      • +1

        I'd give you more +1s.

      • So much for that idea. The Wife is in Med School and has no idea when her one week holiday will be next year.

That being said, I was thinking Burma, as it's newly opened tot the world and would be great to see before the developers get there.

        • In Burma at the moment from previous deal, hurry before its ruined, you arrive in Yangon and you are welcomed by a coke sign.. " Welcome to Myanmar".. but people here have truly been amazing so sincerely friendly.. really recommend it!

    • They seem to be around $160 most days anyway from Sydney? I imagine it'll go up in price for holidays and whatnot like normal.

Last 2am sale was dud. Not like the really good sale they had start of the year.

if you have big shot account, you can secure your tickets today:
    http://redemption.airasiabig.com/Page/bigshotday/en.aspx

    • thats awesome, quite a few for 0 points from KL to siem reap HCMC phuket bangkok etc

    • I don't get how big shot works.. I have big shot.. but 0 points to redeem… :( do you have to have enough points to redeem via big shots?

      • +1

If the redemption flight needs a number of points, then yes you do need to have that number of points to be able to redeem. However some of the flights only require ZERO points, and so I assume that you could book those.

  • Are people going to stay up til 2am?

    • +1

whatever it takes - the early bird….(gets to fly cheap cheap) 8 1/2 hrs to go - doubt I'd be able to sleep though I might set the alarm in case I nod off waiting. Bit like Santas coming tonight.

      • +1

If you were a bird you wouldn't need to stay up?

    • Will be perfect timing after watching Ricciardo take his 3rd win!!

        Good call Nostradamus.

Usually looks really good until you get to the final part of booking where they dump in all the extra charges that aren't divulged until the last part of the process. They could be more upfront about total price earlier, but they don't

    • +1

The only thing that surprises me most of the time is the credit card surcharge… $15 for a $120 ticket. Lol Virgin, you funny 12.5% surcharge

    • AirAsia are a bit better than some other budget carrier websites, but yes, you do need to be careful. Last time I checked though, PayPal was an option with no booking fee (but don't quote me on that!)

      • correcto. use paypal to avoid the booking fee.

I think he's going to Japan, lol.

  • Other times when they have had red hot sales it is very hard to get onto their web site, and, if you are lucky you will be put into their waiting room. Time on their site is strictly limited during these sales, and so, if you are tardy, you are likely to either be logged out, or put into the waiting room by them too. Anyone not experienced with using their site, and planning to get in early, should do a couple of practice runs now and get familiar with the site. Beware the automatic travel insurance and untick it. No need to pick seats, food or baggage now. They cost the same later, and I recommend booking them closer to the date in case you have to cancel (As no refunds except for taxes less a processing fee)

So I have actually ended up staying past 2am, not as many 'big' sales as I thought. If you want to check out the current specials, select drop-down of your capital city under 'Show Flights from' to summarise the current specials for your specific state.

Just landed in Sydney with Airasia. For those who don't know, Airasia's home terminal in Kuala Lumpur is now moved to KLIA2 from LCCT. Having been to the airport 4 times over the past week, I have some travel tips and comments to add. In order of importance,

    • Factor in an additional 15-20 minutes to walk to/fro your gate. The distance between the gate and main halls (called KLIA2 Gateway) could be large.
    • You either book really early >6 months prior (if you need the flight and cannot risk) or really late (few weeks prior which could be even cheaper during low season).
    • International baggage drop queues are surprisingly short with more than 10 counters available.
    • Overnight stay is possible at Capsule Container hotel on Gateway Level 1. RM90/RM70/RM45 for 12/6/3 hours. Tune hotel is a better choice for longer stays and for >1 person.
    • For those who like doing overnight LCCT style (free), there are long benches outside FOS store on Gateway Level 2 with plenty of lighting and shop CCTVs if you need that extra security. I prefer sleeping on the carpet on Level 2 where it is less crowded and dimmer.
    • Compulsory KLIA2 payment of RM3 will be charged on your trip which involves KLIA2. Personally i think KLIA2 is a huge upgrade from LCCT despite not being perfect so not complaints there.
    • Transfer to KLIA is easy with RM2 one way and frequent.
    • Airasia works best for those who with a lot of timing flexibility in their trip. They are punctual in most cases and gets you to your destination with minimal fuss if you stick by their rules.
    • The only downside is Airasia tends to cancel a flight during low seasons for underbooked flights (like now). Personally I think this is necessary to keep the business profitable and low cost sustainable as airlines generally run on paper thin profit margin. My KL-SYD flight got cancelled and automatically moved to a replacement flight 12 hours later but I was given a choice to either change flight date / refund as credit. I moved it to January peak for my next trip (saved 200AUD) and rebook the flight I need at a similar price. Got lucky there.

    • 1AUD is approx RM3.

    • Hi JediED. Thanks for the great tips, I am flying with Airasia for the first time in November and we have two 6hr stops at KL airport on the way to Phuket. As first time travellers, what do you think is the best way to spend the time there? Is there anything to keep us entertained?

My plan is to firstly find the terminal we are departing from and then backtrack to find something to entertain us at the airport…

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

      • +1

        Hi, youre welcome.

Short answer, KLIA2 gateway is essentially a modern shopping complex. There will be plenty of stuff to keep you occupied even if you dont look for them.

A 6-hour stop isnt that long if you need to claim you baggage, go through the customs, check in. Proceed to the check in counter 2 hours in advance to Phuket will be more than sufficient. They manage crowd pretty well in this airport. With the remaining 3-4 hours you have, you can either rest, eat or go shopping.

I dont think it is necessary to find the gate you are departing because by the time you find it, you will be too far away from all the good stuff in KLIA2 gateway. By good stuff, I mean reasonably authentic local food, international cuisine, good selection of shopping brands etc.

There are plenty of information counters around so there is no need to be worried about getting around.

        • Free Wifi in KLIA2 too, limited to 1 hour.

        • @peck:
unlimited, actually. you just need to change your mac id when the session expires :)

On PER - KUL route, they had a $150.00 fuel surcharge for two people, each way :( Really brought up the price.

    • plus, last time i looked, they don't divulge that until you're at the final page before payment

      • AAX for quite a while has to put the full price which people HAVE to pay. If you use their non-Australian portals they tend to add these charges at the end.

Been searching since 2AM. Doesn't seem to be anywhere as good as the sale back in January.

    • $640~ (with no luggage) return from the Gold Coast to Tokyo if you choose the right days, not too shabby.

      • I had Melbourne -> London return for cheaper ;)

  • GC-LGK about $500 rt sept hols. (2015)
Would consider Malaysian for a full service treat - but can't check dates more than 12 months out.
    My 1st world dilemma !!

  • +1

Apparently onward flights from Malaysia Are from $13
    http://www.perthnow.com.au/travel/travel-news/airasia-launch…

    • this $13 figure, my guess is it's essentially meaningless as you can't fly for $13. The tickets i checked out earlier was quoted like that - total cost for the 2 fares was ~$100 or so, but the total price was over $700

      • Weird.

        • No idea what DDDP is talking about.

However, these aren't cheap. Singapore $20… like ok, it's $30 pretty much any day of the week normally. Not worth the risk of booking so far in advance IMO.

      • +1

That kinda stuff makes me MAD!

If we can't fly for that price, then it's not the price!

      • it depends on your destination. i booked a flight from johor to jogjakarta for $13 last night.

  • Is the website ridiculously broken for anyone else via any browser? Can't seem to make a booking under my account, 500 errors/auto logouts everywhere.

Anyone noticed Air Asia is operated by Malaysia Airline, MH317… think again.

    • +2

It's AN airline operated in Malaysia. Other than that… different companies

    • Perhaps some sectors are code share with MH
      pete, please elaborate.

Otherwise AA is privately owned, MH is Malay Government owned (but being privatised - so maybe MH will be operated by AA in the near future).

    • Separate Airline.. Different Terminals…. Air Asia & MAS do not codeshare… and what is MH317? MH370 & MH17 Together?

Southern India (Tiruchirappalli) next October for $500 return from Adelaide
    Plenty of time for research.
