  • Can you tell us the screen specs please? Mainly interested in the colour gamut.

    • I have had to contact Metabox about the screen gamut, I will reply to your question soon :)

      Hi Merlinux,
Here are all the specs I have been given for the screen. I believe it is a 72% colour gamut.
The model number of the screen is AU B156HAN01.2

Response Time: 16ms Brightness: 220cd / m Interface Type: Light Vehicle
      Contrast ratio: 400: 1 Resolution: 1920 x 1080 Widescreen: Yes
Panel Type: TFT Pixel pitch: 0.084 * 0.252 Brand Name: Original
Number Type: B156han01.2 Place of Origin: Hong Kong Aspect Ratio: 16: 9
      Pixel arrangement: RGB Weight: 450g Size: 398.1 * 232.8
      Thickness: 5.5mm Color Saturation: 60% Display colour: 262K (6-bit)
      Contrast: 650: 1 scanning frequency: 60hz Power: 3.4W

      • 400:1 for a matte lcd? sounds too low, i can't believe anyone would manufacture a FHD lcd with such low contrast, blacks are probably grey and colours look washed out

        • AUO B156HAN01.2 General Features

          Says 700:1 there.
It's AHVA panel, so it's actually pretty good.
My laptop uses this panel and I'm very happy with it. Colours are vibrant and black is black instead of grey.

72% is rubbish, 6-bit colour is rubbish. I have 92% on my HP desktop monitor. That's why I think gaming laptops are a waste.

        • -1

I should also mention that 92% is the lowest gamut of all the monitors I own. The highest has a 130% gamut.

        • @MrZ: I'm sure those monitors also cost as much as this laptop does.

  • Seems decent I think- any indication of how many hours you can get out of the battery?

    • +2

Metabox have informed me that it is 4.5 hrs.

    • :)

  • Does anyone know how well linux drivers are supported on this?

    • Metabox don't officially support Linux, but in saying that, a lot of customers do load Linux onto Metabox laptops like Ubuntu. You will be able to find Linux drivers elsewhere on the internet though.

I have an earlier model with Nvidia 750M and different case so not sure how relevant this is (though location of ports are identical so I suspect same/similar mainboard), but mine works except for the switchable graphics (Optimus) and hibernate. Early on the brightness controls didn't work, but newer kernels added an option that fixed it for me.

Regarding switchable graphics, I've tried Bumblebee+Primus and had all sorts of problems and never got it working; was a few months since I last tried, though. I finally settled on using just the Intel GPU; can't remember if I was able to use the Nvidia one exclusively.

      • I read something on Phoronix in the last few months about an update to the kernel that fixes hybrid graphics, but I can't remember if it was for AMD/intel or nvidia/intel (or both?).

Might be worth updating to the latest version of your distro and giving it another crack?

  • How is this different to the W650SJ?

    • +2

It's the same laptop apart from being slightly lighter and the surface material.
It has an aluminium top lid and with an IMR (In-Mould-Roller) over the chassis. The IMR is a patterned top film layer that is injected into the chassis mould, which provides a very long lasting and resistant finish.
Specs are the same as the W650SJ.

Oh and one other thing, the 2.5" Hard drive bay can only take 7mm thick drives. So mainly takes SSD's and slimline spinning hard drives like 1TB 5400RPM or 500GB 7200RPM drives.
        Kris

        • can we not have the DVD drive and have something useful there instead?

        • @salem:
          Yes you can :)
On the website for the WA50SJ deal, just scroll down the "Customise" section on the right to "Hard Drive 2". Here you can buy a caddy to replace the Optical Drive and put in another HDD or SSD.
Unfortunately we can't offer a discount if you don't want the optical drive at all. It comes with the laptop.
          Kris

        • @Kong Computers:

Well the caddy take 9mm drives?

        • @salem:
Yes the caddy fits 9.5mm drives.
          Kris

  • Is this laptop eligible for TRS? When will this deal expire?

    • +2

      Hello,
The deal lasts until the end of September, so 34 days from now.
Yes, this laptop and all laptops on our website are eligible for TRS (Tourist refund scheme). We are 100% Australian owned and operated on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. ABN is 73 163 480 331.
Many customers have taken advantage of this in the past. Just send me an email after purchasing and I will send you a special invoice to give to customs when you fly out of Australia for your GST return :)

Thanks Kris. My Laptop arrived today. Everything is installed as requested. Fantastic Job. Very Very Happy !!!

    • Awesome, glad you are happy :)
      Kris

  • Does this laptop have a removable battery?

    • Yes it does.

  • Does this include the free 256 Gb Plextor SSD?

  • Dupe post sorry

    • no problemo :)

  • Is it standard practice to grab my attention with a laptop within my price range - but then have to add things that I need as an absolute minimum (OS and Hard drive) which then bumps it out of my range. Bait and switch?

Edit: Just saw "No OS or HDD" in title. Gotta admit I just glossed over that

    • No worries :) Metabox has offered this model because a lot of customers are using Linux and/or have their own hard drive from an older machine that they want to swap over.
I am currently doing a video review of this model and will upload the link in this thread soon.
It is a great little laptop and has kinda won me over. The GTX850M does a pretty good job in games but on the most GPU intensive games it's best to drop the settings from Ultra to high for better frame rates.

      Kris

  • Hi all,
I have just made a video review and unboxing of the Metabox WA50SJ.
