180

Happen to see this as I was browsing their website. Just bought 2, they come in an assortment of colours and have "2.1A" written on the side of them.

I had one like this. It looks cheap and fell apart on me and it was damn ugly. I personally wouldn't take this if you paid me.

    • +6

      I'll give you $10! $20?? I know I can break ya

      • +5

I'll chip in 5 (is this a weird sadistic kind of kickstarter?)

        • +8

Would make a great horror film. Rich russians pay peasants to receive USB car chargers

    • +8

Sadistic bastards. If you guys are serious. I'll take your money. Make the order. I'll even take a picture of it installed in my car. I'll donate any monies received to WWF. But REALLY?

if the others are in…. I'll chuck in a few bucks! lol

    • I bought this exact same one from MSY and it died within a couple of days. They sell some "Intact" models and I've had no problems with those, and they feel better made as well.

most of these dont put out anywhere near 2.1a /10w
if you have an android phone you can install a program like elixir that shows you the charge/discharge rate
I've measured most of these car adapters and they will only charge at 100mA-200mA not the 1a my phone wants.
The only car charger i've measured that charged at the full 1a was a chargin unit for a gps (cant remember if it was garmin or tomtom)

Happy to be proved wrong if someone wants to test it

Also, these kinds of chargers can't give an Android phone the specific voltages on the data wires that it needs to see to enable high-current charging mode. With this charger you will only ever get 1amp to all Android phones, and 2.1amp to ipads and iphones.
If you get less, your cables are probably no good. I tested many combinations with a genuine cable and even wired up a 3amp wall charger for my Note 2 and get 1800mah all day long… it's incompatibility and poor cables that usually let people down. =-]

      • Spot on - most devices have specific charging circuits that they look for before enabling high current charging. I did have a link with specific models and circuits supported, but can't find it at the moment.

TL;DR: pretty much all high current chargers are crap, unless they specifically say they support DeviceX, etc.

      • so if i short the data pins on a usb cable (or buy one with it already shorted) all these crappy chargers will charge my phones at 1a?

        • Nope, and a really bad idea! lol

They look for certain circuits, some add resistance across pins, others alter other variables. Really wish I had that link!

got a link to elixir? there a couple with the same name

Looks like this one is the most recent - for Android.

        • Thanks for that link… good app.

        • Great App. Thanks. There seems to be a big difference between my collection of USB chargers. My "Genuine" Apple charger seems sadly lacking….

        • @Ferkin Tight:

I'm charging using the genuine charger, what parameter to look for? Can't seem to find anything related to charged amps.

        • @bargainaus:
          Run the App
          Select Information
          Top entry says Battery

Current reading with my Samsung charger in:
          Voltage 4307 mV
          Current 1900mA

          Unplug the Samsung charger says:
          Voltage 4307mV
          Current 460 mA

Plug in a different charger to see the different mA readings.

Edit: A little weird. When I plugged the charger back in it after the above it now says:
          Voltage 4338mV
          Current 1200mA

Though the phone is now fully charged???

        • +1

@Ferkin Tighto: apple chargers only provide 2a when apple devices are detected via particular resistance across data pins

I had one like this as well. After few weeks it started getting so hot while charging that the plastic started melting.

    • +3

      so its more than 2.1a?

      • +1

No. The power is unfortunately not going to your phone but into generating heat internally.

        • +1

Gday Lucas I picked up this car charger today how do I check if it heats up internally?

        • Put your hand around it after ten minutes of usage lol

    • I have one like this and it works fine, cool story?

  • So what would be a good one?

From 2012… They've had to change their warranty conditions as a result. Old news is old.

Okay, so in Mid June I bought the same looking car charger off eBay - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dual-2-Port-Universal-Mini-USB-Ca…

Now the thing is it did not have written 2.1A on one of the ports, and it can not charge two devices simultaneously. I raised the matter to the seller and after bit of a dodgy behaviour, got refunded.

Now, can anybody tell me if the MSY one can charge two devices simultaneously?

    ANYONE?

    • +1

Hello, is it me you are looking for?
My ebay one that looks exactly like yours will charge 2, only if you plug the power hogging device in after the first device (that would be in the 1A port). The power hog would go into the 2.1A port.
I'd imagine the charger would take priority on the 2.1A device to give the most current that device will take.
I wouldn't plug in an ipad and another phone and expect both to work/not catch on fire for $1.13, but my lumia 1020 will only charge on the 2.1A port anyway.

      • Problem is, my eBay one has nothing written on it like 2.1A. Its plain looking and I suspect it will deliver 1A for both usb ports. Do your's has 2.1A written on it like the MSY one?

  • A half flat Sony Xperia z ultra draws 1.5A from a samsung 2a charger and 1.2a from this msy one.

    • You bought the MSY one? Does it power both USB port at the same time?
