can this stream full 1080p via a NAS?

    • Yes

  • Sorry a noob question. What OS is the best for these NUCs.

    • +2

If you going to use it on TV then Windows 8.1
If you don't like the W8.x interface then install Classic Start
It boots much faster than W7

    • +1

      Entirely up to you.

    • At one stage I am not sure about now but there weren't any Windows 7 drivers for this. I had to install Windows 8, runs pretty well from my experience.

      • +3

Intel has release the Win7 driver packs for the this NUC
I have installed Win7 on mine

        • +1

There you go :) wasn't too sure if it changed.
Though I feel Windows 8 boots faster than 7 just from experience with my desktop.

        • @Kaboda: Windows 8 boots way faster than Windows 7. I've got Win7 installed on this same NUC and it takes about 30 seconds to get to the login screen.

        • +1

          @Kaboda:
agree, also prefer win8.1 over win7
but I didn't want to waste a win8.1 license on that box

        • @bostos: True for what your using it for which is either a media player or something light probably not worth the 30 second sacrifice.

    • +1

If you're using it as a media centre, why not go with XBMC? OpenElec is a very good choice for it as well, stable and fast.

      • +2

While OpenElec is very good, Windows lets you do a whole heap more. This NUC can be setup to run SickBeard/SABNZBD/CouchPotato, act as a Plex Server, and run XBMC all at once if you're running Windows.

        • +1

Sure, but my NAS is already doing all of that.. And this NUC won't make a very good NAS!

Oh, and my NAS didn't require a Windows license either. :)

        • +1

@ryang: Yeah but depends on the NAS. I've got SickBeard/SAB/Couchpotato running on my Synology NAS too, but it can't act as a Plex server or a web browser.

  • cool, so i can use this as the medium between the server & tv then… awesome!

Is this the one with the newly revised N2830 CPU ? if so sign me up

    • +2

      The spec says 2820

      • -1

Err how can I revert the neg? I meant to + but touch screen mishap. Sorry.

      • +3

Would still be interesting to find out the Serial #; the newer model 2830 is also called 2820

If you're shopping in person, there is a way to differentiate the new and old model though. There is an SA number in the bottom of the box. If it says Version # H22962-103 it will have the new N2830 processor. The models -100, -101 and -102 are equipped with the older N2820 processor. Alternatively, the AA number can be used to check the model. AA number H24582-203 is the new N2830 model whereas -200, -201 and -202 are older models

  • What's the cheapest actual legal way to get windows 8 (or 8.1) for this?

  • +1

    Will Linux work with this?

    • +1

Yes, I have Arch running on mine.

      • Thanks.

FYI for those who buy this - the very first thing you need to do is update the BIOS via USB. It literally won't let you install an OS without doing so, but of course it doesn't tell you this in the error message when turning it on lol.

Install the BIOS, install the OS, then install the Driver bundles or nothing in the OS will work.

    Latest BIOS: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=24…
    Driver bundles (Win 7/8/8.1): https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=23…

    • +2

Further to that, if installing linux, everything will work without requiring the drivers*, as they're just windows drivers. Still pays to update the bios though.

*at least on ubuntu 14.04 and OpenElec4.0 it did, anyway. I assume anything else using a recent kernel will be fine too.

      • at least on ubuntu 14.04 and OpenElec4.0 it did

        Excellent. Thanks.

  • Freight is a bit over the top from this mob. Hell,to be honest, way over the top. Courier = $57 Australia Post $35 to WA country.
Same Item from other offer, Shopping Express , postage (AP) $11.75.
No bargain if can not pickup.

    • Shipping cost applies and store pickup is available.

$35 to regional WA for a PC? Sounds about right to me.

Its only that cheap because people in east coast cities subsidise regional post…

      • +2

Sorry, but crap. Why can other companies send for a third or less? And we are talking a Intel Nuc here not a full blown full size computer.

        • +1

yeah it comes in a box smaller than a tissue box. (heavier though, obviously).

        • Exactly, the 2820 would fit in a 500G satchel.
          The box is tiny.

        • +1

@King Tightarse: It's fairly heavy for its size though, and shipping is based on weight as well as size.

        • +1

          @MrFunSocks:
Well its 4x4" square that's tiny. If the weight is over 500G it can easily go in the next size up large satchel (3KG) anywhere in Australia for ~$13 which includes tracking if using click and send. Cheaper for larger volumes.

        • +1

@King Tightarse: The box is definitely not 4"x4". The actual NUC might be close to that, but the box it comes in most certainly is much bigger. Definitely weighs over 500g too, would have to be at least 1kg.

        • @MrFunSocks:
Well I had a 2820 for a week or two and I can tell you the box was the exact outline off the nuc so unless they have changed, it's 4x4 or so from the top. Later I bought the i3 and that comes in a much larger box but either will comfortably fit in a 3kg Aussie Post satchel with plenty of room for lots of bubble wrap.
There is no reason for these mental postage prices.

        • +1

@King Tightarse: Bought one the other week, its bigger. The box has to fit the NUC and the power brick etc in.

Anyway, I just added it to the cart and can get it couriered to Brisbane southside for like $12, so that's not really much more expensive than anywhere else.

        • @MrFunSocks:
That's great for you but some are reporting $57 for the same service.
Aussie Post 3kg satchel is $12 Australia wide.

        • +1

          @MrFunSocks:
This is what mine came in:
          http://cdn.shopclues.com/images/detailed/5222/IntelCeleronKi…
          Pretty much a cube.. I'd say 5^3"

  • why can another website do it for $10.95 P&H to brissy (includes a SSD & ram) on top of this? see the other deal for this device currently.

  • Guys, need your expert opinion:

Occasionally I prefer to do some of my office work from home that mainly includes updating excel spreadsheets, report writing in MSWord etc. I have been thinking of setting a desk PC for this purpose.

But now considering that the NUC can also perform that task, I am thinking of getting one of these NUCs and install it in my Theater and use it primarily as a HTPC and also use the same unit for my office work by running an HDMI cable to my Study room (next room to my Theater) and setting up a 27 inch screen there with a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Can you guys suggest if this setup can work ?

    • +1

Yes; however prolonged Excel use with a Wireless keyboard/Mouse on the lap (is that where it would go if no desk?) would be a bit of a pain.

Also large Excel spreadsheets may lag occasional
