Noontec N5 NAS for $34.95 Delivered @ Shopping Square

130

I got one of these last deal. They work pretty good for a $35 NAS. I don't have to use my pc as a media server anymore so pretty happy. My smart TV seems to play everything direct from the NAS. I have had high bitrate 1080p mkv stutter once or twice during play with heaps of motion. Only happened once recently.

I updated the firmware though this link and its makes the web front end heaps better http://www.hersheng.com/noontec-n5-firmware-v-230

The torrent client is bearable. The only real caveat I fint with the device it its a it slow copying and extracting files to. but it has not really bothered me. When you get it format the drive with the device before screwing it together and quickly plug the hard drive into your PC sata and move the data across. Or just use the USB header on the device for the initial file copy.

    Noontec, I remember that brand.

I used to have a Noontec 3.5" IDE external case, the powerpack died within weeks (others reported similar), however the unit itself kept on working until I had no more IDE drives to use in it.

Excuse my somewhat unrelated post :)

  • How does it work? You plug this to your router?

  • yeah I dont know man so far so good, for me it was a cheap way to dip a toe in the NAS water. Its was this or get a more efficient system. (Phenom x6 is thristy on the juice for a 24x7 box)

  • my guess it, this is just a basic hdd server with DLNA function, so the stuttering would have been from your TV decoding the signal rather than from this.

slow transfer seems to be a common problem with cheaper NAS's, my D-Link is the same.

… and when you scroll down the shopping square page, and notice the itsy bitsy fineprint:

Clearance Stock: 30 Days Replacement Warranty in Australia

  • This looks appealing, would it work nice with Plex and Chromecast?
What's the next step up? I see NAS units for hundreds

It's pretty much just shared storage, nothing else. Plex has a server back-end component which you can't run on this. Chromecast I think you'd need to stream from a PC or tablet device.

Higher end NAS devices will generally have:
      - A better processor and more RAM, resulting in faster transfer speeds
      - Better quality components, meaning less hardware failures
      - More built in services, such as your Plex server, file synchronization, snapshots etc.
      - 2+ hard drive bays, which allow you to raid the drives to reduce the risk of data loss
      - More connection options, e.g. eSATA and USB 3.0

Be aware also that this device does not come with a HDD. You would need to purchase and install your own.

      • Still dont see the point in an expensive NAS >$200. You can just make a low power haswell box. and also have an extra PC there as well to browse with while you are at it. In the end the choice for me was either a DLNA compatible cheapy like this, or a new more efficient CPU and board combo for my 24x7 box.

I mean each to their own. for me raid is pretty pointless, if I lost a drive i'd only lose stuff i'd just download again (98% is stuff i dont need). And i backup important stuff monthly to another drive and which I put in the cupboard (disconnected from the impending lightening strike).

If i had a home business etc then some safe raid equipped NAS would be nice.

      • Many thanks for writing this.

  • The actual thing is only 19.95 and shipping at $14.99!!!

I've bought and setup several of these for friends and family.

They've been using it for a year with no problems. It works and it's cheap. For households that don't want to run a server or have no USB on their router to share a USB hard drive this fills that need.

You can use it to store home photos, music and videos and I find saving the files is a bit slow but retrieving the files for viewing is more than fast enough.

I should also mention it has a small fan that is constantly, it has no controller to adjust speed so it's always going at a single speed. Sound level is not much different to that of a PC but I wouldn't recommend putting it in a bedroom as the humming will probably get annoying quick.

  • Review here: http://www.dansdata.com/noontec_n5.htm

It's faster than my D-Link NAS, which can only write at about 5MB/sec due to a totally poxy CPU inside.

  • Same vendor selling them for $50 on ebay.
