U2's New Album "Songs of Innocence" FREE on iTunes Store

1470

Promised in the apple event, the album is free for all iTunes Store costumers.
Should appear in your iTunes library automatically, not in mine yet but I'm guessing these things take a bit of time.

Sign up to iTunes before October 13th to receive the album, exclusive to iTunes Store til then.

Appear in the library or in the store automatically? I don't want this crap in my iTunes Library.

    • +2

Library, but not automatically downloaded from the sounds of it. So it'll be on your list of iTunes owned music and you'll have the choice of downloading it to your devices.

      • Yep. This is listed as 'purchased' in the store. Meaning it'll show up in the library on my computer and phone. I'm not happy about that.

        • -1

Just delete it from your iTunes library. If you delete once it removes the files, delete twice and it removes it from display as part of iCloud. Problem solved.

          Angry. Angry young man.

        • +12

          @morini:
Sure, make it free, but don't force it upon me in an attempt to make it the most purchased album of all time. If I now sync my purchased content, it will download along with the content I actually want. That's not right.

        • @puffinfresh:

How would it considered the "most purchased album of all time" if everyone knows it was given away for free?

        • +2

          @gokhanh:
"Apple®, Universal Music Group and legendary rock band U2 today announced the release of the album “Songs of Innocence,” which Apple is gifting to iTunes Store® customers around the world, making it the largest album release ever with over half a billion copies distributed."

        • @puffinfresh:

…to make it the most purchased album of all time.

…making it the largest album release ever

There's a big difference here between these two statements.

        • +3

          @Snoop:
By listing this as a purchased item, they are claiming a copy has been distributed. A claim they could not make if it were simply available for free purchase.

        • -1

          @puffinfresh:
Anything I get through the App Store is shown as a purchase free or not.

        • +1

          @Elijha:
Yes, but free items are not listed as a purchase until you purchase them (for $0). That is different for this album. It's listed as a purchase for everyone, even if they didn't get it.

    • -3

Quick answer to that is… Don't bloody click on it then!

      • +2

it's literally automatic, you don't click anything and it just shows up in your library. I've heard you can't delete it either.

        • It wasn't automatic for me. I didn't have it in my library, I clicked, it's in my library. Magic!

        • Not for me - I had purchased for $0

    • -2

first world problems. you don't even have to initiate the download.

      • If I go to purchases and select 'download all' to restore the items that I have indeed purchased, the download of this album will be initiated.

    • +5

      Why down vote this guy?

      Mod: Negative vote revoked

      • +5

I dont understand the negs he's getting either…. perfectly valid argument he's put forward.

Its fine to give away songs, but dont automatically put them in your cloud without authorisation.
Let me pick what songs I own thanks very much Apple.

There's free to eat, and then there's force fed.

    • +3

      Apple: "Its free"
puffinfresh: "Get this thing out of my sight! What do I look like? Someone on Ozbargain?"

      • +2

Normal store: "Would you like this free item?"
Apple: "TAKE THIS; IT'S YOURS NOW" shoves it into your shopping bag

It appears many people are angry about it:

"While you can delete the music from your device, but in “the Cloud” the best you can do is hide it in your online library."

Looked in iCloud and finally found what I've been looking for …

    • +5

      Damn… I still haven't found what I'm looking for!

      • +32

Took me a few Mysterious Ways to find it. It's the One just released before this October. I was going to download it With or Without you. Anyway, all I'm saying is It's a Beautiful Day when you get a free album! I thought I was going to have to wait till Sunday, Bloody Sunday…

Ok I'll stop now, I think I'm feeling a bit Numb. It's just that the download is Even Better than the Real Thing! I seriously think I need a Miracle Drug to fix my Vertigo, which may have been caused by my sudden Elevation in excitement.

All I Want is You and everybody else to be happy with this free download. Getting something for free is The Sweetest Thing. Ill Stay on my iTunes account till it downloads, at this rate it'll be just before New Years Day.

        • +9

Some advice… you should probably Get On Your Boots and Walk On, because clearly you're Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of, Mofo!

        • +5

Snoop - All Because Of You I'm seeing U2 songs everywhere. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me it's exciting! I mean, you're like an Angel of Harlem with the U2 song tie-ins. I thought I heard a few more at the Discothèque, but maybe it was when I was out flying my Kite.

  • It looks like iTunes is getting hammered. I might try again later.

  • Did that done that. Thanks Apple!

  • It won't let me download it. It says purchased but I can't click on anything other than sample the music.

  • +7

But, But…. I'd have to put iTunes on my PC!

    • +4

      Oh… that dirty feeling.

    • Well, you don't 'have' to, after all, free means free right? (wink wink)

  • +1

looks like I already own this!! It must have been free in the past as I dont recall paying for this.

  • +2

If you don't like iTunes you can still download it then keep the files once you uninstall iTunes, since iTunes went DRM free on files.

  • +1

And the award for the biggest cra….

  • +1

Anyone else finding the internet slow today. I blame this….

  • Hasn't appeared in my Match library :( I guess this is a proactive way of addressing piracy?

  • Every time I seem to download the "free" songs that are listed on here, I'm charged $1 on my visa. Anyone else have the same problem?

    • Yeah, I've seen a few $1 from itunes on my account, but they cancel/drop off.

I think they do it to test the validity of the card.

Mine always drop off (like a pre-authorisation). I've never been charged the $1.

      • Every time I check, $1 has been taken from my account and not returned.. So I don't download these anymore. Lol

  • +2

It didn't show up in my Library. But finally found it, I had to :
    - Look under 'Purchased' (in iTunes)
    - Hit on the 'Download All' button
    Then magic happened

  • +7

It's already "purchased" on 07/09/14 (which I didnt initiate)… I dont know if I like that.

I realise its not downloaded until I do it, but I dont know if I like having gift songs put automatically in my collection like that.

    Apple :(.

    • +2

Careful, that makes so much sense that I might have to down-vote you.

      • +1

Whoever negged the deal because of this is being petty however.

  • every time someone downloads this album a child dies of hunger in africa

  • +4

Thanks very much OP. Geez some people are hard to please!

  • When I noticed the album in my library today, I assumed someone had hacked into my account. Fortunately, it was only Apple, who have given me something I neither wanted or needed.

  • For those that still can't see the album in Music app. Go to Settings -> Music. Make sure "Show All Music" is on. This will show any musics on iCloud even those yet to be downloaded. Good luck.

  • -4

U2 will ALWAYS have originated as a Christian Rock band and as such they are VERY VERY VERY uncool.

    • I always thought uncool was caring what was cool in the first place ….

Better than 95% of the other cr*p around, not a very high bar I know.

    • -1

Wow, glad you are bringing so much love to this world..

  • What kind of costume do you have to wear? Is the Superman cape suitable?
OP you mean free for all iTunes customers!!
