Just double checking, vaya charges by MB whereas Virgin charges by KB? this may be better deal than the $18 per month vaya plan bc I'm a huge data user

  • Wouldn't it be better just to buy the phone outright and go with Vaya ($18)? I don't use that much data anyway and even with MB billing I still won't reach 1.5GB. Plus if I needed the odd international call, VoIP is always there. There's no contract as well.

    • Do the simple calculation.

    • I have read a few times Vaya customers easily going over the 1.5gb limit. Charging by MB makes a huge difference..

      • It doesn't really. For me it's roughly a 200-250mb difference over the month. Went from LC 1gb kb billing to vary 1.5gb mb billing, made no difference to the way I use data.
I have a 3g watchdog widget, which can be set up to auto round each session to the nearest mb.

  • Question:

"Bonus 2GB: offer ends 19 October 2014. Available when you port your number across from a provider that does not use the Optus network."

Will I still be eligible for the extra 2GB data when switching from Vaya to Virgin?
    - Vaya uses the Optus network

    • +2

no. But you can just easily buy a $2 vodafone or telstra sim and switch, and then it will work

      • +1

how does that work? are there planless sims that you can buy?

        • +3

Buy prepaid sim bro (voda or Telstra)
          Go online
Port number wait 15mins to 4 hrs
Then sign up with virgin online or over phone

    • +2

I went to a virgin shop today. asked the lady and she said you can port to virgin then choose the upgrade option. paid $2 for the sim. I've ported on the spot but it seems like the number will only transfer on monday.

edit: i was going to get a vodafone sim (port from amaysim) and then sign up to virgin as a new customer but that wasn't needed.

  • do Optus allow tethering yet?

    • When haven't they?!?

    • Currently using Virgin Mobile.
      Tethering works fine.

    • -2

      Virgin allow free tethering.

hi Guys, i just spoke to virgin on the phone and they are saying the 2 gb bonus is for anyone who switches to virgin even if from optus, I told him the T&C say otherwise, and he said they are updating them since the iphone 6 plus wont be out till friday, and he said when you put your order through it will show the bonus as part of your contract.

    • did he give a delivery time frame on a iPhone plus?

      • +1

Will be released Friday 7.30am, that's all he could tell me.

    • So i assume, VAYA people can go to Virgin shop and apply/sign up and then get the bonus 2gb,….

  • +2

$70/month for a phone plan, don't you have better things to waste your money on?;)

  • +2

You also get $35 referral bonus if you can find some existing virgin customer to refer you. If you can't find any, I'm happy to help. :-P

    • PM if needed.

Virgin plans are pretty good this iphone launch. Seems like all telcos are trying harder this year. But more importantly OP, any deals on Johnson and Johnson No Tears shampoo? Few people here might need some

  • Surely, buying outright via salary sacrifice is still a better deal. For those that are currently working, most companies will accommodate this once a year. Add in a reasonable byo plan and you're ahead over a 2 yr period.

  • +1

I wish I saw this sooner! Now they are out of stock! ):

How is the virgin mobile network though? Is it on the same level as the Optus networks?

    • +3

Virgin is Optus, so exactly the same

    • Yep I've been watching the Optus site and the Virgin site and they both went out of stock at the same time.

  • I think I'll pass… the $300 call and text limit seems to be a bargain killer.

    • +3

I always try to leverage the data that comes with it to offset the reliance on traditional call and texts. The majority of people I know already own a smartphone so I'll use Facetime Audio calls and imessage for other iphone users, viber and whatsapp for calls and texts respectively for all others.

It ends up being a massive amount of additional texts and talk time for me IMO.
Plus with the 2GB extra - it's more than I'll ever use.

My general data usage calcs (Feel free to correct me) based on 2.3GB of data allowance [where 1024MB = 1GB Or 2355.2MB in total]
facetime video 200MB per hour = 11 hours
facetime audio 50MB per hour = 47 hours
      Viber 14MB per hour = 168 hours
imessage / whatsapp basic text messages - negligible

I'd love for someone to point out the flaws in this? There's always something I seem to miss!
      My 2c.

If you know other people on virgin, it's unlimitied calls and texts to them. If you know people with iphones, it's unlimited free messages to them using imessage which uses very little data. And for months that you use less than $300 credit, it rolls over so you have a buffer for months where you make more than normal amounts of calls. So it works out to be plenty for most people for the above reasons combined.

      • I wasn't even aware of the rollover credit!
        BONUS :D

  • Their website says all are out of stock.

Im moving from TELSTRA to Virgin ( intending to that is); is the difference in quality of service much ?

    • +1

In urban areas, not much difference. In regional and country areas, a substantial difference, with Telstra much better (at a price).

      • Agreed. I use virgin and ssmith summarises this the same as I would. If you go out to regional country areas, the difference is noticeable.

    • Virgin is using the Optus network, so not much difference…..

  • I have been with Virgin Mobile for several years and I sent them an email asking what they can offer me to stay with Virgin Mobile as my contract is expiring next week.

They have offered me to have the first 2 months absolutely FREE……Is this cool?

I am looking at moving to Vodafone, how is Vodafone's network compared to Optus/Telstra?

    • I'd say Voda used to be the 3rd. At the moment though I personally think Optus and Voda are about the same. (and 4G is faster on Voda)

  • I've been with Virgin for the last 2 years and I'm going to Telstra. Reception isn't so bad but I've been moving around a bit for work lately (Adelaide, Sydney, Perth) and it's been pretty sub par in all those locations, actually it has been quite bad. If you want good reception, pay the money and go Telstra.
EDIT: In relation to value I got an awesome deal: $59 per month with $700 of calls and 3GB of data. $15 a month for a 64GB iphone 5 when it came out. Virgin was very competitive but I don't think they are anymore.

  • +1

I just upgraded from my iPhone 5 to iPhone 6 64GB for 24 months contract with Vodafone. I spoke to Retention team and scored $5 ongoing discount. In a nutshell, scored $79 plan for $74 (Red plan including phone). They wouldn't discount anymore than that. Trust me, I tried hard! Hope this helps some of yous..

  • Look like we can sign up for iphone 6 now, but not 6 plus

The last time I used Virgin Mobile it was OK being part of the Optus Network. The issue I had though was the poor internet speeds. I persisted for some time and then discovered that Virgin Mobile traffic uses a different APN to Optus. As such Optus traffic gets priority over the Virgin so in effect Virgin data just sits and waits for Optus to be processed. Is this still the case ? As if Virgin is not up to Optus speeds then it is a great plan. Also is the Optus 4G Network availabe on this plan?

    • Since Virgin stated using 4G, all Virgin customers who want to use 4G need to change the APN to Optus' APN.
I think that answered all your questions.

      • Oh OK so Virgin are now allowed to access the Optus APN cause when I last used Virgin it was not possible. They (Virgin) told me that data through an Optus APN was not counted as part of my 'included' data and as such would be charged at the going rate per MB. Good to know.

  • Guys, just sharing this to you. I've managed to get a good deal with Vodafone. I've been with them for about 6 years. They've matched Virgin's $70 plan with the phone (iPhone 6 Plus 128gb) but they gave me extra data which makes it 2.8gb instead of just 2.3gb. I think that's a good deal. So to fellow ozbargainers who's with vodafone, instead of calling for an upgrade, just call to cancel and ask for this deal or better.

Edit: You also get 2 months of free unlimited internet for 2 months (Data workout plan)

    • Just take care they offered me the same on the red $30 plan + $40 handset. Careful the $30 red plan doesnt have free voda to voda. Comes in handy for me since most of the family are on the same network.

      • It does mate, they can't remove that, it comes with every plan.

        • you are wrong.

        • +2

Yeah, just realised that. Those sneaky bastards! I'm stuck with them again for 2 years. Never again!

        • @Izefyre: Hey mate, howd did you get the deal?

        • Opted to ring for cancellation instead of ringing for an upgrade. I was really ready to leave but Vodafone offered this deal which seems really good. I don't do much for calls and text so the $300 value works for me. But as stated, it doesn't come with an infinite Vodafone to Vodafone calls or texts. The selling point for me was the 2.8gb data. With the advent of Viber, Skype, Facetime or any social media, you can pretty much contact anyone through these apps. I asked for 3gb but they were really set in stone with that deal, it's like, whenever customers asked for a price match from Virgin, they would offer the same deal.
