    TWITTER “CHEEP CHEEP” SEATS!
VIRGIN BLUE CELEBRATES 9th BIRTHDAY WITH TWITTER SALE

    $9 TWITTER FARES*
Monday 31 August 2009: Virgin Blue Airlines is celebrating turning nine years old with $9 seats on sale across a range of routes in the first of what the airline says will be regular ‘Twitter’ sales.

The $9 ‘Tweet seats’, priced deliberately at less than a bottle of birthday champagne, will only be available on the Virgin Blue Twitter website – www.twitter.com/virginblue.

From 9pm tonight until sold out, Virgin Blue will offer 1000 $9.00* one-way fares for Virgin Blue Twitter fans to snap up across a range of destinations including Canberra-Sydney, Port Macquarie-Sydney, Brisbane-Newcastle and Rockhampton-Brisbane. The fares are for travel from 2 February 2010 to 27 February 2010.

The sale is the first of a series of regular “tweet seats” sales that will be offered across the Virgin Blue domestic route network over coming months.

Travellers will be able to go to the Twitter site and click on a link and be taken directly to a booking page with the special fares which, for this sale, are up to 91% lower than the every day lead in fare on the same route.

The airline Group will also add Pacific Blue flights to its future tweet seats sale fares, offering super deals from Australia to some of the most popular destinations in the Pacific including New Zealand, Fiji, Vanuatu and Samoa.

Virgin Blue Group Chief Executive Officer, Brett Godfrey, said, “This is a bit of fun and also a bit of an experiment trialling distribution through one of the latest forms of social media.

“Our marketing team has been closely watching worldwide consumer trends in markets where travellers are already social media savvy and we see Australians fast developing a following for Twitter as a source of the latest information regarding a wide range of products and services including airline news.

“With the current trend in real time news and information we expect the fares will be snapped up quickly,” Brett Godfrey finished.

To follow Virgin Blue on Twitter and take advantage of the “tweet seats”, check out www.twitter.com/virginblue.

    • All fares are one way for flights booked on the internet only (via Twitter link). Fares are subject to availability and may not be available on all flights or peak times. Fare price is non-refundable and checked baggage charges apply. Pre-pay $8 online for up to 23kgs of checked baggage per person one way flight, or pay $20 at the airport for the same allowance.

    Just booked 4 Syd-Port MCQ.
Pay by credit card so they charged me a credit card fee of $28.00

    • LOL

  • Why would anyone want to fly to Rocky to BNE anyway?? Should have been the other way

  • Credit card fee of $21!

  • Virgin Blue = FAIL.COM !

  • I noticed that there is a special on connection flights too
Newcastle to Melb then connecting to Brisbane for $39. Can u buy that and just fly from melb to Brisbane and miss the first flight?

Might be a little backdoor way

  • Got CBR to SYD to PrtMQ and Return all up AUD122.00 Could not be happier! I just hope I remember to take my flights:))

  • just got 3 adult tickets, BNE to ROC return, including CC fee for $91, amazing

  • credit card fee $14!! total $25 per person for the $9 deal. not too bad. although it's not exactly $9. don't expect too much

  • working for me - $18 return syd- port mac, plus $7pp credit card. $50 per couple. good deal but not keen to go port mac or canberra so giving it a miss. good deal though.

By the way, how do you avoid credit card surcharge for Virgin. Jetstar at least lets you do direct deposit I still think if booking more than 2 wks before travel.
These guys should be able to set up some sort of Bpay facility. It really couldnt be very hard. And asking $3.50 credit card fee on a $9 ticket is a bit much - over 33%

  • Another 1h10m to go…

Sale ends 11:00 PM 31 August 2009 or when seats are sold out

  • Had gotten 20 tickets on the days i wanted to go to Port Maq and since I didnt want to pay 20 sets of credit card surcharges, chose the online transfer POI method.

Seems like the Virgin system isnt compatible with Google Chrome and couldnt go back to pay by CC.

Tried to get the same number of tickets again but not available anymore.

    Well thats life for you.

  • $9 or $12.50. It's cheap and a loss leader if ever there was one!

  • Could have booked Sydney to Canberra return $9 each leg. Most flights still available. Didn't need a twitter a/c.

    Didn't book, though.

I don't want to go to Canberra.

    And I don't live in Sydney :P

  • I just booked
    SYDNEY-CANBERRA $9
    SYDNEY-PORT MAQ $9

  • me and my friend will be going to Newcastle for 3 nights just after my BDay ^_^
