or was it 89 cents idk lol

i really don't care cheaper bread for us consumers so i'm happy :)

  • +31

i really don't care cheaper bread for us consumers so i'm happy :)

Yeah, because Coles and WW do it to benefit us, not to send other businesses to the wall and once they do, jack the price back up so we all pay more.

    • -6

They don't really do it to "benefit us" - its more like implicit colluding where supermarkets signal to each other what prices they are going to charge by matching other supermarkets, and overall, helps keeps prices higher and dies bit benefit consumers in the long run. Also… its white bread so nothing really worth anything anyway

      • +14

They don't really do it to "benefit us"

What I said was sarcasm in reply to what I quoted…

    • What other businesses? Who does it hurt? Bakers Delight?

Personally, the people that used to buy this bread at $1.00, and who now bought it for $0.85, aren't the ones that go to Bakers Delight anyway.

Considering that the loaf I got last Sunday from Bakers costs $3.80

      • Next time you go to Coles or Woolworths, take a quick look what's on the shelves.

You'll may notice other products on there that aren't Coles or Woolworths branded.. Amazing! But of course, they're not made by any other businesses at all are they.

And you know, the independent stores don't sell bread or anything either..

  • +78

it's crap bread though, so who cares…

    • Agreed, the nutrients have been stripped off, just a pile of baked sugary powder. I like me some wholemeal bread!

      • +6

Wrong. The sandwich bread has never been imported, that was a specialty bread sold a few years ago. It's all Australian now except for some of the sweet stuff like danishes

From what I understand it's imported frozen and half baked.

They finish it off in Australia.

The Coles White Bread shouldn't be anymore stale then the other brands in the bread isle.

I'm guessing you made this up or you've purchased Coles bread once in your life and it was stale because someone forgot to throw out old stock which seems very unlikely because of how quickly white bread stock is turned over.

      • -5

…or I've bought it multiple times when I'm around Coles and happen to think it goes stale extremely quickly and you should stop making baseless assumptions. Jesus.

    • +1

both are the same quality (or below)??!

    • I don't know about the Coles branded bread, but I used to buy the Woolworths house brand bread for a long time, it goes noticeably stale within a day or two (only good for BreadnButter Pud or feeding to birds), and it is often mouldy within 3-4days in warm weather. I suspect it doesn't contain enough salt or any other preservative, which is why it has such a short shelf life. Whereas the Helgas\Taylors\Burgen\Abbots\etc are often not as fresh when purchasing but they last up to 2-3weeks without any apparent staling or mould growth.

  • -8

i really wish the 2 of them stop doing stupid stunts like this, that bread has more air than flour.

How about not selling these discount bread at all and put the savings into the quality breads brands they sell instead?

the savings from stocking/throwing away these cheap bread should be substantial?

    • +4

Coles can afford burn millions of dollars if they want to… and you are suggesting they stop selling this bread to somehow improve their other bread?

They have people much smarter then you telling them what breads to sell and how much to sell them for.

      • -1

sure. you guys can go ahead with the race to the bottom with the crap bread.

just remember what you said here when the rest of the local brands producing perfectly better bread gets pushed out of business because of these sort of stunts.

it is already happening, so good luck.

        • +1

          Are you serious?

We live in Australia, we love to buy overpriced or high end food products… How do you think "Woolworths Gold" or "Coles Finest" is still around? Why do you think Australia was the first to have a McCafe?

If anything its a race to the top… If Woolworths could they would be releasing Woolworths Gold bread… this isn't very practical as they have in store bakeries though.

        • 95% of all bread produced by the same company, Goodman Fielder. Including all the brands you know and love.

  • -2

IT's been on wollies adds 85cents bread

  • +8

This whole thread is people who don't understand where Woolworths Homebrand and Coles SmartBuy bread comes from along with a bunch of assumptions about cost cutting measures they are wrongly claiming this bread has.

You can't hate this bread but then go on about how great Wonder White or Tip Top bread is and if you are talking about bakery bread then it has nothing to do with the bread found in the supermarket bread section (not the bakery section)

    • +2

You are right, it all comes from the same factory as the name brand stuff. I believe Woolworths sliced bread is made by Tip Top and Coles is made by Goodman Fielder, who do Helga's (could be mistaken though).

It's still rubbish though and barely classifies as 'bread'. Good for feeding to kids who don't know any better but not much else. Having said that, that's all some people need and it's a good deal for those people.

      • +11

        "Good for feeding to kids"

That's exactly who should NOT be eating it!

        • By that logic I would say no one should be eating it.

  • +2

Deliciously naturally white with high fructose corn syrup sweetening! Yum.

    • +2

Brown bread is not much better either, and in some cases, worse for you as it has more calories per slice. Read the nutrition info on the package carefully when shopping.

Manufacturers add in sugar and salt to make brown bread more palatable since they know kids (and adults) don't like to eat wholegrain bread.

    • +1

HFCS is an American phenomenon as their corn industry is heavily subsidised. We are one of the largest producers of cane sugar in the world so don't need to use it.

      • And you think our sugar industry isn't subsidized?!

        • +3

Doesn't change the fact that sugar is used in Australia, not high fructose corn syrup.

You sir, should give back your ozbargain license!

      • The 2 litre Pepsi bottles have been "on sale" at WW for around 12 months. They have just jacked the price back up to compensate for the 85 cent white bread that is only good for livestock.

    • Coles Brand Cola has gone from $0.90 to $0.75.

Aldi's Viva brand tastes as good as Wonder White and only cost about $2 a loaf. They are baked by Buttercup.

  • +1

Simply a Loss Leader that is easily absorbed by these massive companies. Prices have probably crept up a few cents on other staple products to compensate as well.

    • it's not a few cents. 10c and higher for some items, and happening every few months (worse for ciggy, going up almost every week).
when the gfc happened the price was up, like house price. now when things seems back to normal, the price on the shelves not going down, even some are up. no wonder they can give weekly promo 50% off and they still make profit from it!!

      • Your so right!

Woolworths actually control cigarette prices world wide, when they see that "brongz" is enjoying his cigarette too much, they force all cigarette companies to raise their prices!

Or maybe…. its inflation combined with all the other random things companies do for profit like reducing the size of shapes boxes and halving the size of Cottees cordial and adding artificial sweetener to it.

Did Woolworths also raise the terror alert level to high?

    • -1

      Down with whitey bread.

  • just because its made at the same factory doesnt mean it uses the exact same ingrediants….probably goes stale faster….not bad if you go through a lot.

    • +6

The only way it could go stale faster was if the other brands had preservatives.

But I'm sure you are thinking that the flour in home brand bread has been specially made to go stale faster, that makes more sense.

Stop going down down down on all your product Coles! Poor bread!

    Ingredients:

Wheat Flour, Water, Yeast, Vinegar, Iodised Salt, Canola Oil, Soy Flour, Vegetable Emulsifiers (471, 481, 472e), Mineral Salt (Calcium Carbonate), Vitamins (Thiamin, Folic Acid).

Apart from those emulsifiers (they hold it together) it isn't too bad.

    *A Wheat grain

Each tiny seed contains three distinct parts that are separated during the milling process to produce flour.

1/ Endosperm…83% - the source of white flour. The endosperm contains the greatest share of protein, carbohydrates and iron, as well as the major B-vitamins, such a as riboflavin, niacin, and thiamine. It is also a cource of soluble fiber.

2/ Bran…14% of the kernel weight. Bran is included in whole wheat flour and can also be bought separately.

3/ Germ…2.5% The germ is the embryo or sprouting section of the seed, often separated from flour in milling because the fat content limits flour's shelf-life.*

Its funny Woolworths sells Wholemeal flour for $2.14/kg.
And the ingredients are Wheat Flour and Coarse Bran.
    http://www2.woolworthsonline.com.au/#url=/Shop/SearchProduct…

Then it sells Plain flour for $0.75/kg (ingredients - wheat flour)

So you are paying $1.39 extra for a small amount of bran,
which they removed in milling process.

And a lot of expensive wholemeal breads are the same -
just a bit of bran reblended in.

To think I used to eat this stuff as a teenager, two slices, spread with butter plus mi goreng noodles. What I'd give to still have that kind of motabolism. Although, knowing how unhealthy that is now I dont think I would ever touch it again!

  • Went to my local coles and they were still selling this at $1…. I did although get a 15 cent loyalty discount which made the bread only 85 cents…

This is Ozbargain but OZBers should not have to forego quality for a bargain such as this. It's just not worth it in this case. Spend that extra $1.65 and get that Helgas bread in WW that's on special for $2.50. A true bargain as you're not foregoing quality.

My housemates buy this bread as a contribution then eat my expensive $5 bread. There's one thing that i don't like skimping on when it comes to price and that's food…..and furniture, and junk quality products in general. I'm not going to spend $400 on an inferior quality coffee machine when I can buy one on special that will last me twice as long for $800.

That's fine if all that extra cost is going on better quality ingredients.
      But I doubt it.
More likely advertising and a big expenditure paying Goodman fielder executives and shareholders.

These are the ingredients for Helgas white bread:

Wheat Flour, Water, Rye Meal (4.5%), Yeast, Iodised Salt, Vinegar, Vegetable Oil, Wheat Gluten, Soy Flour, Vegetable Emulsifiers (481, 471, 472e), Mineral Salt (Calcium Carbonate), Rye Flour, Vitamins (Thiamin, Folic Acid).

Almost identical to Coles and Woolies recipes - 95% white flour and water.

Goodman fielder makes Coles smartbuy and Helga's bread.
      http://www.heraldsun.com.au/business/goodman-fielder-uses-it…

Do you really think they would use one type of white flour for Helgas in their factory, then another for Smartbuy ?

      Its a bulk commodity.

    • You are on the wrong website. Maybe you should try out OzMonocle
