How do I get the Amazon Appstore on my Android device? To download these apps free now, download the Amazon Appstore for Android: https://www.amazon.com.au/getappstorenow.

Why isn’t the app free for me? If you have an existing Amazon.com account but cannot download the app for free, you may still be shopping the Amazon.com store.

How can I get the app for free if I have an Amazon.com account? To shop Amazon.com.au change your ‘1-Click address’ to your Australian address. Go into 'Manage Your Content and Devices' and then into 'Settings'. Check that the ‘Country Settings’ say Australia. Click 'Change' to check your address is in Australia. Above your address, it will state: ‘You are currently linked to shop on Amazon.com.au.’ If it says ‘You are currently linked to shop on Amazon.com’, then click the related link to select Amazon.com.au.

You do not need to create a new account and you can continue to shop for physical goods at Amazon.com. You can always change back to Amazon.com for digital products at any time.

    This Works for me

Amazon have been so nice to me lately.

Please Plex please Plex please :(

    • +5

worth the money imo :) one of the only app's i've purchased …

    • was lucky enough to pick it up during last Amazon giveaways… love using it :)

      • That's when I picked it up as well. But the Mrs wants it on her phone now, now that she seems to love Chromecast. :)

    To the OP.

If you uninstall the amazon store all your apps stop working until you reinstall it. In other words you have a built in kill switch. Versions of the same app downloaded from Google Play store don't have that mechanism.

And all this business about Australian store vs US store is very very irritating. I don't want to disconnect from the US and it feels like you're trying to force us into doing that.

I'd rather go without the apps.

    • +2

      Okay. bye

    • +2

If you wait until about 5pm tonight (AEST), the US store will probably have the same promo.

      • Thanks for the tip.

    • And all this business about Australian store vs US store is very very irritating. I don't want to disconnect from the US > and it feels like you're trying to force us into doing that.

No one is forcing you to disconnect from the US. You can download Android apps from AU store and buy physical goods from US store with the same account.

Yes but you can't use both the US and AU store for apps. Nor for kindle books. It's a mess and while I don't understand Amazon's motives clearly I am suspicious.

        • +3

Their motives are simple 'region pricing', ever try to buy an MP3 album from amazon.com?
Once they've setup the .au store then expect to be paying the 'straya tax. (Not sure how the prices compare ATM though TBH. :) )

        • I just realised I'm using both AU and US store bought apps. Account is currently back to the US store, but the AU apps show up in the app list, install and run fine?

    • Well said @syousef! This AU / US Store is nonsense.

      EDIT: Problem solved! https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/162835

  • +3

Sure you can buy them all and never install them but of that list Swype, SketchBook Pro and City Maps 2Go Pro are the pick of the bunch.

  • Swype, Paper Camera and mSecure are my picks, already have them all though.

  • TY Op.

    Got quite a few.

  • Hi Op,

Changing your country settings is a nightmare on a mobile device. Quite frankly the process is too much effort than it is worth. If you want to encourage people to move to the Australian account settings then you seriously need to make the process intuitive and simple.

    • Hi jhaley3180,

Thanks for your feedback - we appreciate it. We are working towards making this much simpler - stay tuned.

      Thanks

      Lee

  • I got printer share in an earlier Amazon deal and it's really good for WiFi printing.

The pro version is $12 on play store, but having said that the play store has several other free alternatives including Google cloud print, though I think that one requires certain functionality built in that works with Google's API.

    • Built into the printer that is

  • Appreciate the free apps, OP, but I have to ask: why can't I pause/resume any of my app downloads or updates?

Is there an option in the app? If there is, it isn't obvious.

    • Hi Juddy,

At this stage, we do not have that functionality, but we are constantly working to improve the Appstore and we do recognise that this would be a great feature to have.

      Thanks

      Lee

      • Curious… why 20825?

Random number? At least 20824 other clones of you?

        • Well, the name I really wanted - ' Leecher' - was already taken…

    I get:

    We are sorry

You are not eligible to purchase this app due to geographical restrictions

When I try to "buy" these apps.

For the 100000000th time, read instructions above how to change to AU store.

  • THey are free now in the U.S. store. Just downloaded msecure. merriam webster and relax melodies for free.

    • Can you provide link please. Thanks.

    • The few I checked don't seem to be free (yet).
      For example, msecure is $9.99.

    • Yes you are right. Just checked and they are free in the US Store now too.

  • Got some terrific apps for free Amazon Australia in the past - Tune-In Pro, Plex etc - not so much of interest this time around for me, but keep the offers coming :)

  • I'm glad mSecure has become free. Now I can access both data frim my iOS devices (not free) with my Nexus 7.

  • I can't log in, it keeps telling me to check my internet connection or date and time..

  • Uhhh… i've changed my country to au as per instructions, still not seeing those apps as free… any help? I do get some free apps like sonic dash, but not the one listed above, i.e. Sonic 4 ep. 2 is still showing that I have to pay.

    • Hi Arislan,

Sorry that you are having difficulties. Could you please doublecheck that where your Country Setting says 'Australia' in the text above your address, that it says: ‘You are currently linked to shop on Amazon.com.au.’ If it says ‘You are currently linked to shop on Amazon.com’, then click the related link to select Amazon.com.au.

Customers based in Australia can choose to shop either site for digital products, whatever you choose will not affect how you shop for physical products and you can always change back at any time,

      Thanks

      Lee

      • I see them as free now.. I suppose it doesn't happen that quickly, have to wait half a day before my phone picks it up. And yes, before anyone ask, I tried for half hour after I changed my settings online, even force stopped the Amazon store app in Android - a few times.. that's the age of the internet for you, somethings are real time, but some Software architects must have designed it to be a batch job running hourly or something in the background.

      • Oh additional info for anyone getting same issues as me, after it shows up as free, and I click on it, it pops up a dialog saying something like "We detected you are not shopping from your local area's marketplace, blah, blah", after which I dismiss it and it pops up again with anothr dialog saying "we've detected you've switched your country, please press ok to reload". I pressed ok, it went back to the app screen and press "Get App" to start the download and it failed with an error. I forced stop the App again and restarted and its all good now.

I'm guessing what happened here is I already have an amazon account with country in the U.S. I downloaded the amazon store app AND signed in BEFORE I switched my country as per instructions above. The instructions above needs to be updated to note this. If you're like me or if you already have the app store and signed in before this with your country in the U.S. you will go through the same issues I had.

Note all these apps are now free in the US store here

    • Thanks for the link lancedefrance :)

Rep, can you explain why the app version on Amazon always lower much lower than in Google store. ?

    • Some apps are older versions than you will find on Google Play. Not all are older though.

    • They have to offer it cheaper (and make less profit) otherwise people would just get it via Google Play (Competitive market means price differences).

  • merriam websters didn't seem to be free for me.

    • free here…
