Free Hellofresh Classic Box ($1 Checkout Cost Refunded) for $64 Grocery Box (Most Major Cities+)

9310
HEALTHYMUM

UPDATE: I got my order last night (7/10), so at least some of us did I guess.

EDIT: after many people complaining about them cancelling and not refunding, I apologise, I had nothing to do with it but I'm in the same boat and not sure if I'm getting an order or not (I didn't get a cancellation email so it's possible?)

They changed the website - they literally said on that page that the "$1 fee would be refunded to your account"
Here's proof:

    • Thanks, I'll add it to the title

    • "Important information:"

It seems appropriate to add this final piece of 'important information', for the sake of OzBargainers who may search the forums for "HelloFresh" in the future, and read from the top of the thread:

This entire offer turned out to be ill-conceived BS.

  • +5

Please note that its a subscription - you need to cancel after your order otherwise they'll continue to charge & deliver.

    • Yeah, I'll emphasise that in the post, thanks!

    • +1

That is correct, put it in bold character as my girlfriend subscribed to two delivery with 40$ gift card that were distributed in Sydney CBD, then she forget to cancel and was charge $64 twice…

To unsubscribe you have to untick each week from the calendar, and then resign your subscription definitively.

  • When can we cancel safely? After delivery?
    BTW Thanks OP.

    • +4

I think you can safely do it straight after delivery - from the site:

Do I have a minimum time for the subscription?
No. You can cancel at any time after you've received your first delivery! You need to let us know by Wednesday night if you do not require a delivery the following week via your online account. You must let us know by this time because we commit to order quantities with our suppliers for the following week.

      How to cancel your subscription

Cancelling your subscription is easy. You just need to follow these steps:

      1. Go to My Orders on the menu to the left.

      2. Choose the subscription you'd like to cancel and click it. Please note that if you also have a fruit box, you need to go through two cancellation processes.

      3. Select the edit button at the top of My Subscriptions.

      4. Click on 'Cancel my subscription'.

      5. Follow the steps to cancel, and once you complete the process (including a short survey), you will receive an email confirming your cancellation was successful. Please contact us if you do not receive an email confirming your cancellation, as it may not have been successful.

      6. Please note that cancellations must be made before midnight on the Wednesday prior to your next delivery. Emails requests need to reach us by 4pm Wednesday.

        OK. Anytime after first delivery.
So that would mean between Tuesday and Weds next week, if people only want the one box.

      • +7

Make sure you call to Cancel, I tried these guys out a couple of weeks ago and wasn't impressed with the quality of the produce and decided to cancel the service through their website.
However the following week I received another box. Called to complain and the customer service was poor and they said it was my own fault for not receiving the cancel e-mail confirmation.

I would not recommend anyone to try this! There are many other BETTER companies that do this in a more professional way.

        Be careful!

        • Lol be careful?!
Well, it's hard to blame them if you didn't do it on your end, now is it?

As someone who has used hello fresh over the last 6 months I beg to differ. The produce is of really good quality and the recipes are lot of fun and importantly tasty - I had the fish the other night and it was really good I've tried a lot of new things I wouldn't have normally cooked.

This is coming from someone who has also used box fresh.

Hello fresh have even thrown in freebies so I wouldn't say their service sucks either.

Not sure how long you were with them but I don't plan on cancelling any time soon

    • Cancel after midnight tonight and before next Wednesday midnight. You can safely cancel from tomorrow onwards but make sure it's before next Wednesday midnight.

      • Cancel at any time after you've received your first delivery…

I think it has to be after your first delivery? (I could be wrong, it's just how I read it.)

    • Personally live on the Gold Coast and their delivery window here is 2pm - 9pm Wednesdays. If you have to cancel after 1st delivery but before 4pm of the Wednesday of the previous week that may not be possible for me.

    • another option is to "skip" the next few weeks after the first delivery. that way if you don't make the cancel date they still won't send the next weeks.

    Thanks Zeyus, great deal!

    • "Thanks Zeyus, great deal!"

Clearly not, in hindsight, given that they've kept my $1 (anyone else pay with a non-refundable card?!?), cancelled everyone's orders, and sent out a patronisingly worded, contradictory, unprofessional series of emails to everyone.

The first email "confirms" that the order has been successful ("Congratulations, you have successfully subscribed to the most delicious service out there!"). WORSE though, after gaining my loyalty under a completely false pretext, in this first email they encourage me to recommend the company to my friends; to tout for them, to get them more customers ("You can earn credit by sharing the culinary love!" etc.).

Another email follows, and this second email is more of the same… "Welcome to HelloFresh! Strap in for some serious eats and fun in the kitchen - you’re soon to receive a box brimming with bespoke recipes and the best of the best hand-packed produce in just the right amounts." And it craps on like that for a while, and shows a nice picture of a box of food like the one I'll be receiving.

Only in the third email, SENT ~24 HOURS LATER, is the scam revealed. After taking my dollar, confirming in two separate emails that they're sending me the stuff, and requesting that I tout for more business for them/ offering an inducement to do so, do they reveal that actually the whole thing was a mirage. They euphemistically refer to an unexpectedly "overwhelming response" etc., as though we are idiots. I mean PLEASE… even peeps with zero marketing skills or knowledge know that the first rule of accepting orders is to make sure you have the stock to honour them. This mob has been in business for a while, so I simply cannot believe that their system is so primitive/dysfunctional that it would go on accepting thousands of orders long after the stock to cover them had run out. If it is, then some of the comments on previous threads about how unprofessional other aspects of their business are, are not surprising.

The fourth email is really worded as though they are mocking their “would be” clients, not to mention continuing to lie to them, after already wasting their time, taking a dollar from them, raising their hopes with TWO confirmation emails, and encouraging them to tout for them. Here is the fourth email (my italics):

      “Hi ———,
A quick note to thank you for giving HelloFresh a go and also that we're sorry to see that you’ve decided to cancel.
Your cancellation has been processed immediately. After your final delivery on 06/10/2014 you will receive no further deliveries.
Thank you very much and hopefully we’ll be feeding you again soon!

      All the best,

      Tom Rutledge”

This email is at once bizarre, unprofessional, patronizing, dishonest, misleading, erroneous, and a bunch of other (negative) adjectives as well. This is assuming that the statement therein that a delivery will be received on 06/10/2014 is simply another boldfaced lie. I think it’s safe to assume that it is.

This is waaay worse than the “Red PawPaw” saga, because at least those dudes were professional enough not only to get the first delivery out, but also the second, before falling on their sword. It was “touch-n-go” for a while there, but in the end that mob handled their own demise quite professionally.

In contrast, these “HelloFresh” clowns have deceived thousands with an empty promise followed by erroneous/deceptive “confirmation” emails, taken money from them, asked them to recommend the company to their friends and family, only to ultimately reveal they will actually give them nothing. Of course it’s hopelessly misguided to think they will be able to “rise above” this fiasco. Given the bitter taste they have now left in the mouths of thousands (no pun intended), not to mention the more thousands that the actual initial customers recommended the company to, it’s quite possible it will be the end of the company.

There was a way the company could have avoided turning thousands upon thousands of potential customers against them; they could have rescued themselves from this disastrous, self-inflicted potential death-blow.

WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE WAS:

      1. Apologised profusely, but assured all that their orders would be fulfilled, sequentially, over the coming months.

      2. Allocated a proportion of their boxes each month (10-15%, something like that) to making good on their promises of an introductory $1 promotional box, until all had been delivered.

      SIMPLE.

      • wow you really are reading too much into it. they made a mistake it seems and weren't prepared to be ozbargained…end of story, some people got their orders, some didn't. you can argue they could have expected it, but no need to turn it into a conspiracy.

        • Most of them did not receive. posting on FB and thinking it will be used by few members only is over optimistic.
It was a subscription and not something that users can forget easily. It is not like using a coupon in DickSmith or other retailer.
It was painful to cancel subscription from their website and then from Paypal.

They could easily have the coupon limit set, but wanted more subscriptions and many will forget to cancel and will pay….

  • Cool deal! Does this stack with the referral bonus you get for introducing friends? Thinking of introducing my parents and getting $20 referral credit in the process.

  • +1

Do you have to be a new Customer?

    • Not sure, you could cancel, try the coupon with sign up again?

    • -7

Don't tell me I'm the only one to try it.

      • -2

I am curious too, I live in a more than 2 person household and we all have our own credit cards. So if a box only feeds two would want a couple of us to sign up.

      • I guess you and all the other Brodens.

    • +1

just try it. and send the pic of your grocery kiosk in front of your garage

Curious they deliver on Labour Day Monday.

  • +1

Delivery for me is on the 7th. They are awesome. If only their regular prices are lower.

  • I dont understand how these things work…

I'm at work all day, and their delivery window is 2pm -> 8pm on Wednesday. I wonder what'll happen if I miss the delivery?

    • I have put in instructions to leave it in the carport.

    • and are the orders packed in dry ice or similar?

      • Not dry ice, but the meat ingredients are packed with an ice brick.

    • +2

May be that's why the link says: stayathomemum ( stay at the home mum) :)

  • How does the refund work for the $1?

    • +1

      r u serious? $1?

  • I have a couple of $30 vouchers that I wasn't planning on touching. Anyone know if that could be combined with this offer to get a classic box and a $24 Fruitbox for free in first delivery?

  • -1

I don't think they'd survive under the wrath of this many OzBargainers if this happened to all of them.

  • +5

How did you hear about HelloFresh?

    On a Voucher Site

    TICK

  • Anyone else try it on the "5 Meals per week for 2 people"? It discounts the $99 price by $64… taking it down to $35 for essentially 10 meals… Fingers crossed the ingredients are as nice as they say!

    • That's pretty good, hoped it worked for you since that's what I get. If you're worried check out their instagram. I haven't been disappointed. Sometimes I think I would be when it comes to the vegetarian meal but I'm always pleasantly surprised. If I need to I can always just go to the shops and pick up some chicken or something else to mix in with the vegetarian option :p

Shame I couldn't take advantage of this deal.

Regarding cancellation, the terms and conditions state:

"The cut-off for subscription adjustments (pauses, cancellations, order restarts, address and box type changes) made through the online customer login is midnight on the Wednesday before the next delivery."

Whereas when you sign up, it states:

"Please remember that the deadline for changing your subscription preferences is Wednesday 4pm before your next scheduled delivery."

I would suggest saving a copy of their T&Cs for future reference.

    • Their actual site T&C state the midnight, so surely that is more sound to go off than a little alert during your order. I'd like to think they'd honour that.

    • I think it's 4pm for cancelling by email and midnight if you do it yourself through the online account management.

I suggest using the PayPal method as well as the Hello Fresh subscription cancellation to ensure there are no issues. These subscription models are hell confusing for a lot of people and even the cancellation process isn't the most straightforward. Reminds me of Naked Wines.

    • -1

I came here to say the same as I just did that myself.

  • +2

Thanks OP - had been looking at trying them out but was unsure - this just sealed the deal - first box arrives next Tuesday!

  • +1

Thanks, I've been meaning to try this - seems like a neat idea but not sure about quantity sizes. Now I can find out for myself!

  • For us vegetarians please note that the same code applies to veggie packages! :) Ordered two coming on Monday - public holiday so can stay at home and wait :) (Sydney). Cheers for heads up!

  • +3

Am i the only one who feels 'guilty' for this small business, getting this deal knowing that i would cancel it…?

    • No. that is a Marketing strategy.
They have been giving gift cards last month worth $30 and might not have seen that much of subscriptions due to the cost. They want users to try once atleast as it is a new idea.

Also many people forget to cancel and they might get few subscriptions out it, that would benefit the business I suppose.

  • Can anyone tell me about using Paypal to join this plan ?

I didn't think paypal allowed ongoing withdrawals or paymenta without permission for each transaction .

    • Yes, it is sort of auto debit once you give them permission during the payment. You can go to your paypal profile and cancel the subscription in future if you want.

      • Once you choose a credit card you dont have an option to later on switch to Paypal :( Well, lets hope their cancellation system works out. Ill also call them after delivery just to make sure. Didnt want to use the Paypal as I use it exclusively for Air Asia flights.

        • As akastyl13 mentioned above, you can pause the future deliveries. Cancel the subscription from their portal on Tuesday next week.
Not sure why you use Paypal for Ais asia only and Credit card for everything else. You should be doing the other way around. That is the whole point of paypal, not to share your card with sellers.

Also register your credit card with Paypal and do payments from there.

        • @Gaggy:

Yes, I registered the credit card with Pay Pal and I use it only for Air Asia because Pay Pal is the only way not to pay any fees when booking the tickets.

And I make few purchases online thus no need for Pay Pal and/or the sellers don`t offer Pay Pal as payment method.

        • @noskich: Paypal is made for online purchases (ebay and most retailers) mate. Most of them support Paypal, if not then I go for CC.
Its not safe to use CC for all online shopping. There have been incidents of CC theft from online retailers due to their lousy security online.

  • Where can i see $64 box?

    • +1

select normal box 3 meals 2 ppl and enter postcode.

  • Can you order then cancel immediately to avoid forgetting to later?
OR if you do that does it mean you dont get the free one?

    • you won't get the free one.

  • Thanks Gaggy , I will check that out now . I didn't think too much when I selected Paypal . Paypal or Gofresh didn't ask me to allow ongoing payments via Paypal tho . A bit confused really .

    • No, it does ask. When you confirm your paypal password, the details say ongoing payments.

  • Thanks OP. I just do not see what is in the actual box. When I click view box, I just get directed to ordering. There are some items I just don't eat. Any idea how I can find out what is in the box?

    • check next week recipes. You will receive the ingredients for 3 out of those 5 meals.

  • +1

For those wondering about next week's menu:

    • Grilled Chicken with Spanish Rice
    • Steak with Chimmichurri
    • Lemon Broccoli Pasta
    • Chilli Prawn Pizza
    • Mu Shu Pork
    • You only get ingredients for 3 out of those 5 meals…and you don't get to choose which one you want.

      • So normally you get the ingredients for 6 meals in total, and you don't get to pick which ones and they want $64 for that? You could buy 3 roast chooks and cooked vegies from takeaway or supermarket for that!

        • Its for the busy person. They also send recipe cards.

  • +1

Next wednesday top ozbargain post "Reminder to cancel your hello fresh subscription before Wednesday 4pm to save $65".
I reckon many people will forget about the cancellation (including me) and pay one more week of subscription.

    • +1

See my big post above, where I explain how to not be charged $65 next week, and this is something you can do directly right now :) So you wont be charge whatever happen if you have 3mn to play in "your account" on hellofresh!

  • +1

Can i change from classic to veggie box?

    • I changed online through account management, then emailed them to make sure it was under control, and that I wouldn't get charged extra.

  • What's in the box, in the box?
    What's in the box today?

  • Sorry if i missed anything, but is this just for one delivery or is it for a whole week?

    • They deliver one box once a week, so this free box covers one delivery (one week).

  • +4

I think the call centre is gonna be pretty busy on the 7th and 8th Oct.

  • Does anyone know what they do with deliveries if you're not at home and haven't specified anything? Thanks!

  • I have a block on international transactions for my commbank MasterCard. When I placed the order it, my MasterCard had problems so I used amex.

Turns out the problem was that the $1 was an international transaction and therefore blocked. I would have thought that Hello Fresh would bill from Australia?

    • Berlin, Germany as it happens. Which makes it all the more surprising that the whole thing turned out to be an utter farce (no orders will be honoured); I thought the Germans were supposed to be pretty efficient !?? LOL

  • Is there a limit of one per household? I think so right?

    • yes it would appaear. You can try ordering more than once per household but all your orders might get cancelled.

      • -2

I haven`t seen one per household limitation, have you? No mention in the link.
As long as you fill out the details of two different people (but with the same address) and pay with different cards it goes through.

        • +1

@noskich, this is what happened with ezibuy saga. People getting too greedy and using coupon more than once…and all their orders got cancelled. Best to play it safe and only order 1 box.

          @Jar Jar Binks:

Im vegetarian and my partner isnt, that`s why we ordered two boxes.

  • Thanks OP. Is there an expiry date for this promo? I think I wanna sign up but preferably when uni madness is finished.

    • +1

It expires quite soon, 5 or 6 October. Go to linked page for details.
