Edit: Comment: Minimalism: Why you don’t need what you want
http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2014/10/09/comment-minima…

Imagine your life a year from now. Two years. Five. What will it look like?

Imagine a life with less: less stuff, less clutter, less stress and debt and discontent. A life with fewer distractions.

Now imagine a life with more: more time, more meaningful relationships, more growth and contribution and contentment. A life of passion, unencumbered by the trappings of the chaotic world around you.

What you’re imagining is an intentional life. Not a perfect life, not even an easy life, but a simple one. What you're imagining is your life once you get the excess out of the way and start focusing on everything that remains.

Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, better known to their 2 million readers as The Minimalists, are embarking on a 100-city international tour to share their story of living with less and to celebrate their new book, Everything That Remains.

At age 30, Joshua and Ryan left their six-figure corporate careers, got rid of most of their material possessions, and began living more deliberately. Come listen to them speak about their journey into the simple life, followed by a short reading from their new book, a brief Q&A session, and an optional book signing.

Free admission. 90-minute event. Come as you are. (You are welcome to pick up a copy of their new book, but you aren't required to purchase anything.)

    this post is so anti-ozbargain
will undermine the very fabric of ozbargain

Nah. 'Nothing' = free. Total bargain.

Sounds like George Clooney in Up In The Air

I'm pre-de-cluttering by imagining I'm attending their seminar, buying their book, then throwing it away.

  • I throw everything out (or give away) and then, I have nothing to define me. I live for my ozbargains.

Its a pretty sad world when we are defined by our possessions, but this is pretty much the case in many societies.

Why is that sad … would you prefer it if everyone walked around naked and was defined by the size of their digger doo instead?

Personally I would. I would be lauded as the richest man in the world

It's ok to want to have (or have) a bunch of toys and shiny things but I don't think we should use those possessions to define who we are. I'd rather we were defined by our actions/personalities, not saying I don't have a long way to go on that front as I can be a bit selfish at times but recognise that in myself.

"Clothes don't make the man" comes to mind.

  • Thanks OP, looking forward to this… So much decluttering to do…

  • My usual conundrum:
Want to be more minimalist - But don't like chucking stuff (waste).

Need to make a big donation-run to charity shops.

Already started killing-off tired clothes… since they were good for going-out, then the garden… now holey!

I've learnt many tricks, but I'd love to learn some more.

It's become a one-step fad. People aren't seeing the bigger picture.

I think there are a few people on here who should attend this. From reading comments there seems to be many people who claim things because they are free even though they will never use them (eg. baby products when you don't have children). Then the item runs out and the people that could genuinely use it miss out.
I am not into minimalism / anti-consumerism however I do believe in moderation!
