Mini review on this type of laptop. My wife has an V5-i5, which looks exactly the same. Pluses, it looks good for a budget laptop, is light and thin for a 15.6", has long battery and no complaints with performance. However, it has the worst mouse and keyboard I've ever used on a laptop, truly horrible. We spent another $20 to get a USB keyboard and mouse, and now it feels like a great computer, but it's not really a laptop anymore.

    • I have an older Acer V5 that also has a similar island style chicklet keyboard. I have used at least 6 laptops with these newer design keyboards, and most are not as good as the older keyboards, especially on better models. Makers are trying to slim down and make laptops/ultrabooks lighter and probably more cost affective to compete with tablets. These newer designs have reduced travel and hence less feedback etc. It seems to be across the board, with some better ( or worse ) than others, depending on model/range and personal typing style. The more you use them, you get used to them. Trackpad same story, but in the long run you will find that the newer bigger multitouch style is better with many benefits. Persevere with it and it will reward you.

Got the V5-573 w/o touchscreen in Champagne colour from DS approx. a year ago for $420 after cashback & have been very happy with it. We just wanted something fairly inexpensive with the kids around and this has worked beautifully. I must admit that I had my reservations about the colour but now I like that too. Thought we would miss the DVD player but are actually liking that it is lighter because it doesn't have one & we got a cheap USB one from the Soup Nazi aka MSY for the rare occasion we actually use it.

Like it so much thinking of getting another for a relative. Thanks OP.

Yeah, that is the model with the then just released i5 4200u. Great bargain then and has not been seen for that price since. I know, because I missed out and have been looking since. MSY had a special on that model, but was $499 after cash back I think. That cpu is still current and very good balance between performance, battery life and price. If you max out the ram and install a ssd it would be even better. I saw somewhere that you can leave the hhd in the normal Sata bay, and install a second smaller mSata in the second bay. This could have the same chassis, so could be possible here too. This model with i3 is still good value, especially with touch and windows 10 coming out soon to upgrade maybe.

Also for an extra $9 get total 2yrs warranty. I know that you could/should be covered anyway by Australian Statutory Law, but that could be a hassle chasing up and this is $9 well spend. Good for resale value if selling too.

@ozhunter68, if you were still interested in this model was going to suggest a couple of DS's that I had seen it at after the sale ended & months later, but realised you are in NSW.

@avitherock: Sorry I didn't see your comment earlier, I don't know if they are at the same price as when I purchased it, it was on sale and then had a cashback offer too. From memory, I think DS was clearing them out to make way for the i7.

But, if you are interested, I could PM you the locations & you could take it from there.
