Refurbished 42” Soniq 1920x1080 LCD (L42V12A), $159.01 (+ $30 Shipping) @ Soniq Online

960

This model had been previously posted on OzBargain about a year ago for $276 refurbished from JB. Here it's $189.01 delivered direct from Soniq.

Key Features:
* 42" Screen
* 1920 x 1080 Resolution
* USB Timeshift and PVR Recording (External Hard Drive required, not included)
* 2 x HDMI, 1 x VGA
* 1000:1 contrast ratio
* Digital EPG
* Teletext
* Digital Noise Reduction
* Progressive Scanning
* Parental Control
* 18 month warranty

I was looking to get a second-hand 42” LCD but it was cheaper to get a new refurbished one. Go figure. Its the official Soniq website (although it seems dodgy) I took a gamble and ordered. Shop emailed saying that there would be minor scuff marks but works perfectly, and also said sorry for poor product description as their website is being upgraded.

Well it seems to work fine. There are minor scuff marks which aren’t visible unless looking for them (I've tried to capture on the phone camera), but I guess this would vary for each TV. They probably do pick-up but you would have to email them.

Maybe someone who bought it last time could comment a review below?

Cheers

    Great first post. Heaps of info. Cheers

    I wonder how they came to the 1 cent.

  • wow. thanks for your efforts.

  • hmmm so tempting as a computer monitor…….anyone have any experiences with this model as a monitor?

    EDIT - appears comments from the last time this TV was posted aren't that great :(

    • +1

      50hz 1080p 42" as a computer monitor. lol

      • 60HZ :P

        • If you click on the product link, the main title says "50Hz".

          TVs here are in multiples of 50Hz thanks to our power line frequency.

        • @eug:

          You are incorrect.

          As with nearly every other 50hz progressive LCD, this Soniq is capable of 60hz.

        • @alittlelewd: You're right. I was thinking of TV frame rate, not display refresh rate. Soniq should update their title. Hopefully there are no scaling problems like reported in previous threads.

    • It you will be using it from a distance using wireless keyboard and mouse and watch movies, it might be ok. But for normal routine work, I would say resolution is not that great.
      This resolution is best for a 24". Would be ok for 27" but not above.

        As a general rule to know how far back you should sit from a 16:9 1080p display regardless of size: if you put your thumb on your nose, and spread your other fingers horizontally, your pinkie and index fingers should line up with the edges of the screen you are watching. This even works in movie theaters.

        I've been using a 1080p 55" connected to a computer for years, works great. However there's two things you really need in a monitor - a low response time and 1:1 pixel mapping. Sony has this, there's a good chance Sonique won't.

    • I recently took mine back to JB as it had a fault.

      Every now and then when I'd turn it on there'd be a completely black screen. The sound would work but absolutely no picture. It would eventually sort itself out but it would take up to half an hour sometimes.

      I did however use it as a second monitor for movies and fifa etc… worked fine when it was working of course.

      Put up with it for a couple years until I noticed the 48" on special for the same price I paid for the 42". Thank you warranty

      Lag, dude. I bought a soniq tv a few years ago to use as a monitor, but there's a noticeable amount of lag. Enough to throw me off every time I moved my mouse. And not just soniq, but most TV's do this since they're a TV first and a monitor second. Only exception for me was on a Sony TV which had no noticeable delay.

    • I have a Soniq 32" LCD 1920x1080 that I use as a computer monitor. Very happy with it, though not sure if the models are comparable.

  • +2

    You were logged out?!?!

    So tempting though. Great post :)

    • +2

      He he, I just hooked up a friend's PC to test the screen. Of course I'm logged on elsewhere… :D

      • I'll let it slide this time.

      • Any pixel mapping Bren? pc mode / dot mapping using hdmi?

        • I'm not too sure what you mean. I set the computer to 1920x1080 via a vga to hdmi connector. The pixels seemed 1:1 no blur/fuzz/clipping etc, very crisp.

  • +6

    Awesome. Was just looking to purchase a cheap 42" for the outdoor area under the verandah. Needed something so cheap I dont care when it fails to stop working from being undercover outside. This fit the bill perfectly. Summer, cricket and beers outdoors. Can't wait

  • wonderful just got one for bedroom :)

    • +3

      That's quite large. How many inches do you need in the bedroom?

      • Are we still talking about TV's here? Don't want to delve into peoples private lives! lol

        • We do, we do…

      • 51" in the bedroom is good, any bigger would be too big…

  • Now I want to know what the blurred out items were in the task bar!?!?

    • +11

      meatspin website lol

      • +5

        Thanks for that, unfortunately now I know what meatspin is :(
        I was using a friend's PC so didn't want their stuff to pop-up. Sorry nothing interesting…

  • -2

    does it have a usb port?

    • did you read the description:
      "USB Timeshift and PVR Recording"

      it will also play xvids, jpegs, etc

  • Not usually a fan of either Soniq or refurbished products, but at this price and with a good warranty….

  • +1 for the screen grab of OZB (and for the deal!) THX!

  • I bought it and dont even know why LOL Put it in the shed I suppose

  • Thanks OP. Bought two - one for a present and one for myself.

    edit: OP would you be able to measure the length of the TV?

  • +1

    out of stock …

    • +1

      oh no I spent too much time reading the comments!

    • Not sure what this site is, but this one claims free shipping https://discountpoint.com.au/our-products/tv-players/lcdtv/4…

    • I was looking at this over the weekend.
      I was tempted to get it, but it is an older model (has the circular base).
      I believe it is the L42S10A-AU model, so its a 2010 model - had some not so good reviews.
      The L42V12A is the 2012 model and I guess would be an improvement of the 2010 model.
      I just purchased the L42V12A :-) I'm glad I waited.

  • Got one! Thanks OP

  • Damn missed out.. My current TV is a 22" computer screen haha

  • Thanks Op. Do you happen to know how long it will take to ship to melbourne?

    • +1

      Mine was shipped to melb eastern suburbs quickly (courier picked it up on Friday then delivered it on Monday). It did take a bit though before shipping for 'processing' (like seven days) - partially because Soniq's email went to my junk filter. I emailed them to push things along.

      • What courier did they use?

        • TOLL PRIORITY (AUS), with tracking

  • damn thats a great price, pity I missed it

  • I'm so upset I missed this, so wanted it. ThanksOP

  • +1

    Just checked back today and bought one.

    Looks like they have more in stock today.

    • -1

      Ha ha, and they have updated the product picture but no description. I wonder if they realise they've been hit by OzBargain? So how do I remove that out of stock sign? Other people were disappointed they missed out and would probably want to know they're still available!

      Edit: fixed it!

      • +1

        Thanks for posting the deal
        …and they're trying to push other products to the listing with 'Recommended Products' lol
        Good price…can't go wrong with 18 month warranty.

        • That is hilarious - looks like they're updating it as we speak! Hope they don't up(date) the price.

        • Interesting… Where did you see it say it was 18 months warranty?

        • @jinsiik:
          It used to be the only picture on the product page, but now seems to be gone? Also said on the order confirmation email. I don't trust warranty anyway, Australian consumer guarantee is most important.

  • +1

    If you're in Melbourne you can pickup in Braeside to save on shipping, just placed an order with them via email. Cheers OP!

  • out of stock!

  • Thanks! Purchased - has anyones order shipped yet?

  • Soniq 42in FHD 120Hz LCD TV $189 - Just scored one.

  • +3

    This is back in stock!

    • Awesome, managed to grab one this time :D

  • Mine was attempted delivery on Friday. Hopefully actually receiving tomorrow =)

  • Just bought one, thanks OP!

  • Everyone happy with their purchase :)

    No dead pixels and how is the sound (speakers)?

    • That's what soundbars are for. :>

      • +1

        Actually the speakers aren't awful so far, PS3 sounds are hearable at 22-28(/100?) and the start-up music is actually quite a bit louder.

  • Ordered on 15th October, still waiting for delivery (Melbourne). I contacted Soniq by email on 16th October trying to pick it up myself, but apparently it was already loaded…

    • +1

      Not impressed with their service. I was told it would be delivered either Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning. After follow up today it changed to Wednesday. Pickup not possible.

      It seems like nobody has received their orders yet.

  • Was told Friday or Monday shipping, didn't reply to my request about tracking number so called today and was told it would be shipped out today lol.

    • +1

      Lies

      "Sorry there has been a delay with the dispatch of stock because we have to arrange stock transfer in between warehouses.

      I have been informed by the warehouse team that it will be shipped out this Thursday, I will send you the tracking link when ready.

      Thank you for your patience."

  • Sold out again - D'oh!

  • I cancelled my order so another one might be back in stock soon! Going to save up for a LED TV, as the power consumption on this says 200watt.. Too high especially on solar power

    • I'll need to check it's sleep mode settings (hopefully there are some to turn the screen off after x hours), that's pretty large!

  • +1

    Got e-mail today…

    "You item has been shipped, here are the tracking details:

    …about time! :)

  • +1

    I received my unit on Tuesday (21/10). I think their warehouse team must be working overtime after being hit by OzBargain :)

    The unit has a few scratches but the picture is perfect, no dead pixels. The speakers are average but who cares, attaching a dedicated soundbar is the way to go.

    These guys have some really cheap stuff. Might take another plunge and grab a TV/DVD combo for the kids.
    http://soniq.com/au/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&view=pro…

  • I received my unit too. I can't see any scratches etc. however it has a disturbing buzzing noise when turned on. I have already tried to mute, adjust sound or colour settings, but it does not have any impact.

    Is this normal for this unit?

    • +1

      Yup! (Slight) buzzing noise. Won't be an issue when using.
      Possibly a faulty capacitor, which will hopefully fail in 18mths and then you'll get another refurb ;)

      • Yeh mine does that too, not really noticeable when in use (audio playing). Not sure if replacing the cap would help? Could it just be the frequency of the SMPS?

  • Hows the image quality on this? Is it worth it for $159 + shipping?

    • I haven't used it much yet. What are you planning on doing with it? I just wanted a larger screen for consoles as our 30" was too small (and can now be returned to a bedroom).

  • Out of stock again, I can't report it as I have already (to report it back in stock).

  • Thanks OP, got one.

  • OMG toll said my TV won't be coming today - have to wait over the weekend again :(

  • Mine came yesterday. very happy with it. Good picture, average sound, no dead pixels.

    Couldn't find a scratch or dent anywhere on it, although the packing carton was pretty hacked up, so I suppose that could have been the reason it was a refurb?

  • Problems :(

    Optical out appears to not be working.

    • Did you get it working?

      • Nope, definitely dead. Tried all SPDIF modes (auto, PCM & off). Will try their support number soon.

  • Received my TV today - crack in the black panel at the front lol

    • lol, I guess it is a gamble, hope it still works well though!

  • Ordered Thursday and no word on tracking numbers - too early to follow up?

  • I ordered over a week ago and they sent me a cancellation email yesterday saying they can't fill the orders!!

    • I just got the same email notice from them - can't fulfill the order and claiming it was an error on the website.

      What are our rights on this guys?

      • The point about the error is probably true. I refreshed the web page regularly for 2 days and the stock status on the $159 unit would change constantly. If they have no stock then what can you do. I got the 42" 120hz for $189 and I am wrapped.

  • I wonder if they did a random cull of orders? I'm a week in and no cancellation or tracking. I might just leave well enough alone and wait and see.

  • Annoying, still nothing.

  • I received mine today, ordered on 23/10

    • Me too ordered 23/10 received 3/11, really happy with the TV for the price; only gripes

      1. No 3.5 headphone audio out jack (only a 3.5 audio in, wtf) for 2.1 computer speakers.

      2. Has a 'just scan' aspect setting for computer but the picture is really ordinary.

      • Bugger, How can I connect speakers onto it? I was hoping to connect my 3.5 headphone connection speakers onto it.

        Do I need speakers with digital Audio Out Optical plug?

        • I'm not sure but I bought the adaptor below to try and go from optical out to create a 3.5mm headphone outlet. Won't arrive for weeks but I'll update you.

  • http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Audio-Optical-Fiber-Toslink-Plug-…?

    I wonder if this is the right adaptor ?
