good price for tp-link av500, shame the postage killing it

  • Shipping to 5000 = $11.17. So kinda meh.

  • Any chance of free shipping on these items rep?

  • +1

Yeah the shipping is costly. But it's still a good deal.

  • i have never understood the point of a 500mbps powerline adapter with a 100mbps ethernet port

    • +2

Dont worry real world throughput wont reach 100mb best i have had is 86mbs Transfer on the same circuit

      • Yup, only some of the newer ones actually go over 100mbs: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/powerline-charts/view

Oh and btw $95AUD will get the chart topping EOP shipped from Amazon. They're 100-240 and with a bit of pin bending action they're good to go. If you're considering EOP I don't know why you would skimp because I presume you will use it all the time.

        • which EoP on amazon are you referring to?
never thought of getting from US and just bending it

        • oh are you referring to the tp-link AV600?

also rather than bending pins, if i just plugged it into an adapter (ie. US to AU), do u think it would degrade the throughput?

        • @Arghs:

Yeah the AV600. Just weigh up how much bandwidth you need, eg speed of your internet plus concurrent streaming devices on your proposed network. No point forking out for the best if you don't need it.

You could use a converter instead of bending, from what I know powerboards and surge protectors are an issue but a single convertor should be ok. I just don't like having things on the wall stacked like that.

        • I am looking at upgrading mine to The EDIMAX HP600 ($89 UMART) it's the same chipset at the TPlink AV600 (which you cant buy in AU yet). I have 1st Gen Dlink AV500 that just doesnt cut if for speed. they are also apparently more tolerant of Smart Metres and solar inverters than the some of the older gear.

Weird, Looking at my WD PowerAV setup and it's synched at 168mbps? It's rated at 200mbps…

        • Do a file transfer test though and you'll see it won't be anywhere near that :-)

In my old place (it was fairly new wiring) EoP worked fine for streaming to one device, anything more and it crapped itself out.

    • Worked out really well for me after my fttb installation.

    • the throughput on these are less than 100mbps. for 500mbps card i think you only get 70-80mbps max. 200mbps is around 20-30mbps

  • thanks , powerline done

The Tp-link AV500 are 500mbit backbone, they establish a connection at 100mbit on your pc, which is a shame, you really need EoP with gigabit Ethernet.

    • hi sorry to ask, but what does that mean?
i've been look at getting a EoP adaptor, would other TP Links be better?

    • +1

Why? I've never actually even heard of an EoP adaptor actually getting to 100Mbps throughout (sync speed for these are just imaginary really). Although admittedly I haven't looked that hard for a while as I now have my place hardwired.

  • Good price on the AV500. I paid $50 for mine and i could not be happier with it.

  • Can you do free shipping to Sydney?

    • Absolutely, the free shipping coupon above will get you free shipping to Sydney for orders over $200 :)

      • I meant Free shipping for one of these special items. ie the powerline adapter.

bought the powerline adapter, great price. Went to the Melbourne store, nice and shiny, good service, pretty easy to get to, so all good.
I wish you luck in Melbourne, there are some fierce competitors on price so you will need to make sure you keep the service levels up. People will pay a little more for service and warranty.
