Samsung SSD 840 EVO 750GB $249 Centrecom in Store Only

492

I know Centrecom is not high on ozbargainers'trusted stores list but theres not much they can do wrong with a Samsung SSD, especially at this price!
Down side: pick up in store only so probably good to call b4 coming in. Probably will be gone pretty fast.

  • great price :) id probably write in store only in the title as well as the store

    • Yeah, in store only and looks like only a small number of units left.

I think they do have stocks. They will just sell small no at this price tho.

Just be aware that there is a known issue with the 840 EVO Range that causes the drive to run slow:

    http://www.computerworld.com/article/2836082/samsung-deliver…

The good news is that Samsung have acknowledged the issue and released a firmware that fixes it. So worst case if you buy one of these is that you'll need to do the firmware update (really easy to do with Samsung's provided software).

While its good that Samsung has released an updated firmware, the solution of simply moving data around to refresh it (based on what people are saying is the fix Samsung have undertaken) is simply reducing the lifespan of the drive and ideally Samsung will release a proper fix.

Agreed. However in this instance I'm more inclined to believe that Samsung and their firmware engineers know what they are doing, rather than believe that some people on an internet forum understand more about the low level workings of an SSD than the manufacturers themselves.

It would be really bad PR if it were found that the 'fix' Samsung have released reduces the lifespan of the drive and I find it hard to believe that they would do that. Until convincing evidence to the contrary I'd trust Samsung's fix.

To people less concerned about the technical mumbo jumbo- this is a good deal for a 750GB SSD. Samsung are one of the highest regarded brands for SSDs, and If I were in the market for a 750GB SSD I'd definitely consider this deal.

Samsungs "Magician" software for managing SSDs makes it easy to check the health/lifespan of the drive and fo any firmware updates (if needed) so even a novice could do the mentioned firmware update if required.

It's not just firmware - it's also a utility, and it's pretty obvious what this utility is doing.
What's not clear is whether the utility only needs to be run once and the new FW will work properly going forward. I think that's how it works.

Also, make sure to check the limitations of the utility as there are many: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/samsung…

@McFly: The software only lets you run it once. After that you can't "refresh" the drive again. I can only assume that the bundled firmware update (which isn't available separately) fixes the problem and prevents the slow down from happening again.

    • I have a 250Gb 840 EVO, haven't experienced any slow downs… but i haven't updated my firmware for a long time either (updated once when i first got the SSD back during the SE sale last year)… Could this issue be caused by the newer firmwares?

      • I haven't read deeply in to it (I own a couple of Samsung SSDs, but none from the EVO range) so I'm not sure about how/when the issue was introduced. Might be worth performing some synthetic tests with a program like HD Tune or similar to confirm you are getting the correct I/O performance.

If you are, and you've had the drive for a while, it's probably OK. From my reading of the issue, the slow down normally happens within a few weeks of using the drive.

  • Cheapest I seen for a 750gb, I wonder if there is any business that would price match and post

  • That's a pretty damn good price.

Dodgy business and sent used graphics card in recent clearance sale as new. Can't be trusted.

    • Hmmm… was going to get one but now a bit hesitant.

    • A good point…

One could run crystaldiskinfo to read the smart data and check the number of hours the drive has been running and how many times power cycled.

I once bought a hard drive from a store, ran a smart reporting tool and took it back when I saw the drive had been used 20 hours or so… received immediate replacement and apology.

    • it turns out that 90% of the HD 7850 sent to all customers are dusty in HSF and PCI connectors . I ordered 2 , both of them dusty. Can't be trusted

    • I think the card might be a second hand and they used for MINING the BITCOIN 24/7 until it's 50% broken. It's impossible that it is refurbished item, the card seems very dusty and smell a bit funny (perhaps because of the burnt of over-used graphic card 24/7)

  • Have bought from them on multiple occasions and never had a problem.

Awesome price, would have gotten one but no stores in NSW.

  • wait isn't this an incredible price - like price error price. am I missing something

    • agree..

  • good price..

  • +7

Ugh they had 4 in stock across all stores at beginning of day. 3 now that guy in front bought the only one at Nunawading. This is pretty poor.

    • +8

Clearance items. I thought we shouldn't post a bargain unless there is more than 10 units available.

Good luck to other fellow OZBer. I am not going to bother (won't be able to get one by the time I manage to go to one of the stores).

  • They're all gone.
Was told they were clearing them out due to the 1TB model coming (dropping in price?)

  • Sold out. :(

    • -1

      No kidding…

  • Nvm. That was quick lol

  • +8

I don't see a point of a deal to get people excited when there's only 4 available.

  • Nice deal but wouldn't touch as it's Centrecom ….. brrrrrr.

  • isn't the new model out in the next few weeks?

  • +2

These are propably return items they are selling as new.

    • This is CentreCON so 99.9% sure these are the HDD's that were returned by their customers already. that's why they only have 4!

  • Good price, but centercom.. No thanks.

  • I'll buy what for a dollar

  • lol i didn't even know 750gb evos existed (bought 500GB from SE a couple of weeks ago and claiming TRS on it)

  • Would be nice if we could find someone to price match this.
