For some reason Dell offers an extra big price reduction for downgrading the Operating System on this particular notebook, the Vostro 1000. Most home users would never notice the difference from a downgraded Operating System. Overall You won't find a better notebook for anywhere around that price.

  • I am planning on getting a laptop by Christmas and this price looks pretty good.

As I am not very computer tech savoy, can anyone tell me which one of these Wifi options is best to surf the net wirelessly?

    Wi-Fi Options:

Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini Card Wireless

Dell Wireless 1490 802.11a/g Mini Card Wireless

Dell Wireless 1505 Wireless-N Mini Card

    • Any 1 will do.

    • N-Wireless cards include (g & b specs)
      G- Wireless cards include (g & b specs)
      A/G Wireless cards include (g, b, & a specs)

Most routers on the market do G (including b) , with a good amount doing N (including g & b). A is not widely used.

N is the fastest but for the average Australian internet connection it doesnt matter which one your are on. Currently using b for laptop, g for Wii.

Chime in if I have any of this wrong.

    • Just get the cheapest one.
Since you're not gonna be playing live FPS games on this, the basic wireless card will be ample.

Instead invest in getting the better 6 or even 9-cell Li-ion battery option.
It'll last you longer, which is a must if you want to be surfing the net.
Wireless chews through your battery like nothing.

Also, you'll still need a wireless router in your house to connect to the net, or leech of other people's wireless access points.

  • For those interested, may be able to get another 5% off with one of these codes

    • just tried. 5% off code works!!!!

  • Didn't know about the code but that effectively brings the total price down to $707, Dell can't be making much on this!

  • Also on offer is Inspiron 6400 for $933+GST 10% (can't find a 5% off)

    E-value code: Q541025-web

    Dell Inspiron(TM) 6400 Notebook
    Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo Processor T2450 - 2.0 GHz, 2MB Cache, 533 MHz FSB

    Memory 2GB (2 X 1024MB) 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM

    120GB SATA Hard Drive

Video Card Intel(R) Media Accelerator 950 Graphics

8X DVD+/-RW with dual layer write

    Wireless Network Card Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945 Dual Band 802.11a/g 54Mbps

    Bluetooth Module

Batteries 6-cell 53Whr Lithium Ion Primary Battery

Its about $200 more for a faster machine, bigger battery, bigger HDD but not sure if the video card is any better ?

  • Video is worse.
I'd go for the cheaper option.
You probably won't notice the difference between CPUs under normal (laptop) operating conditions.

  • Anyone know if Uni students (UNSW or Curtin) get any further discounts ?

    • I haven't heard of a deal with Dell and Universities giving discounts for anything.
My uni (UoW) has a link to a dell outlet with massive discounts depending on how much the package costs. There's a link to Apple stores too.

But it'll depend heavily on what deals your Uni has set up.

Try searching the IT services pages of your uni to see if they have anything.

    • Try the Dell EPP program.

      http://www.dell.com.au/epp/

"Employ, Student & Member Purchase Program — Save up to 8%"

      • That's the one I was thinking of.
There used to be a link through my uni's website, but it disappeared somewhere.
