  • Howgood r these?

    • I don't think anyone is going to know… tempting to find out..

      • +1

Plenty of people know - Head-Fi - consensus is excellent for the price.

        • Thanks!

  • I don't think the title is entirely accurate, the USB is just for charging.

  • bloody hell, i literally just bought a Fiio E6 :(

    • Dont feel bad, the E6 is a good amp, very good at its price point/range of models (ie the size).

  • thanks Op! just bought one….cheers….
hope it will be as good as what the review said…

    • Do you have to create a account in order to use the discount code?

  • At that price and with reasonable review it worth a try. Amazon buyer reported static sounds during use while charging the unit via USB. I have bought a portable amp from USA and the shipping fee is more than this amp :(.

Given the apparent simplicity of the circuit, I would expect to hear noises if there were two cables (USB and audio) connecting it to a PC. Two cables creates the situation known as "ground loop", well known for amplifying system noise.

You can hugely reduce this problem by putting isolation transformers (two needed for stereo) in the audio path between the PC and the amplifier, but doing so will shape the sound, and you'll lose some of the higher frequencies and some of the lower frequencies.

Here's a cheap 10k:10k isolation transformer, although the shipping fees are a bit high from this supplier:
      http://au.element14.com/triad-magnetics/ty-141p/current-rati…

This transformer is usably "flat" from 200Hz to 15kHz. If you want a wider frequency range, you'll need a more expensive transformer. Or, you could always unplug the USB when you want to use the unit. Or you could use a mains plugpack to supply power to the unit.

  • so does this thing just make music louder? How's this compare to using EQ in software music players?? FYI - I've never tried those headphone amp so…

    • You could make your sound louder, however beware in doing so, if you do it with a low impedance headphones or earphones you may hear a pop…. (e.g. you blew them out)

An EQ can provide a boost in volume via gain, however it cannot modify how much power a headphone port will put out.

If you are running some good cans, you may have impedances of over 30 or 60+ these are quite hard to be driven without a Amp. It may make sound, however it may not be loud or powerful enough to take full advantage of the details which the cans may provide.

      • thanks mate, I just checked my Sony XB-900 has 24ohm, that's not high enough to warrant the amp then i guess??

        • It may benefit an amp, but it may not. Hard to say.
You will need to read online about your cans and if they benefit from Amping.

My Fidelio M1 is a 16ohm, but I find amping it gives it slightly more detail.

This amp is a very "neutral" amp, so it isn't a bad one to see if amping your phones makes any difference, especially at this price, it is worth a try!

  • how does it compare to Fiio E17?

    • Doesn't compare the E17 is a heap better amp.
If you are thinking of getting the E17 you may as well get the E18 which is going on Massdrop for $142.98 delivered.

    • Fiio products are generally low quality. I have a few of their products in the past and I was not happy.

      • Really? plenty of users on headfi which says otherwise.

I've tried their Fiio X3 and it is well built very solid and SQ is extremely good.

        • That is because you don't have similar priced products to compared with.

        • Need to tell that to the masses on Headfi who do have similar priced and more expensive products to compare with, who still rate Fiio as being quite good.

You might think they are bad, because you may have purchased some of their older products. I have only used and tested their newer products, which seem to have quite good build quality with the brushed alu.

Obviously it won't match up in terms of $500 items, but for $100-200 it makes them a bang for buck for that price range.

Look at X3 for example for a $170-200 DAP ( + USB DAC) it hits well above its range.

ClieOS has a lot of knowledge in this space, and does plenty of reviews.
If it was crap, he would have bagged the crap out of it.

He criticizes the menu, but that has improved majorly by the firmware updates.

You can also look on Headfi for other reviews on their other products, which seems to show they aren't as bad as you say they are.

        • @lplau:

I have bought 2 portible amp/dac products from Fiio in the past. Both were highly rated but I don't buy it any more. Sorry, it may be my ears but I could not tell an improvement over my PC MB sound card. I have the Fiio DAC set up with foobar+WASAPI and had it played audiophile flac with my Sennheiser 650HD. In the meantimes I could tell a hugh improvement when I plug the same headphone onto my Xonar Essence Card and recently with JDS Labs DAC/Amp.

  • OK, so if I don't know what it is, I shouldn't buy it right? Ah, I can stand it… can someone explain where one would want to use this, please? To amplify my headphones, I turn up the volume and that is loud enough to damage my hearing.

Rep, how long before you post the orders out?

  • Okay, has anyone else seen this on their tracking yet:

    2014-11-07 Customs Cleared null

Weird given days earlier it had "Processed through Australia Post"

    • I think their tracking is incorrect. Mine said that it's in Cremorne VIC which is the distribution for my area since 3 Nov but nothing is received yet

  • Mine's still in transit.

Got mine today. It is amazing. The best buck I have spent for a long time. Much better than a few Fiio that I have purchased over the years and no more.

  • Thanks OP. Mine just arrived yesterday. Definitely agree with Donkeykong that it beats the smaller sized amplifier from Fiio.
