Were there any good bargains or "real cost" price items?
        Was it worth your trip?

  • I also got this in the mail today.

  • do they have good discounts on these sales?

  • +2

Does anyone know the price? eg) 20%?

    • I hear the the staff price is the cost price

      • +7

Or that's what they tell you :P
Unless you can confirm from the Supplier's Invoice price.. the "cost" price may incorporate overheads (delivery + minimum expected return on a product) and actually be the lowest price the employee is allowed to scan it under.

        • Yeah cost to the store and cost to the warehouse or business very different things.

My bet in big retail only the CFO etc knows true cost price.

          @tonka:

My bet in big retail only the CFO etc knows true cost price.

Not necessarily, I've worked retail, and in my store, there's sometimes tax invoices from the suppliers stuck on the shipping boxes around the products, 90% of the time they are just packing slips only, but some are true invoices to the store (maybe someone forgot to take them out, it's the same "cost" listed on the store comp), however the "staff price" at the place I worked at was not as low as "cost". It depends on the store, but those stores that say "We're selling at cost" are usually full of crap. Businesses aren't charities, while at OzBargain we all like the lowest prices, realistically we'd all prefer paying a very slim margin of profit to ensure low priced goods in the future rather than a once-off sale due to an actual closure of an easily accessible retailer.

Usually CFOs do not play with the costs, they would be looking at how the financing is managed.
They leave the cost to the small fry. It would be the buying/purchasing team for the company would be the ones who know the true cost of a product (and whether the ones issued by the company are inflated for taxation purposes or not). Possibly the managers of a store would have access to the cost if re-ordered from the supplier.

        • @tonka:
The CFOs general aren't the ones who calculate cost price.
They have accountants below them to do this.

Cost price is a difficult one as input costs into cost prices differ and can differ significantly over the life of a product.

Cost price has different definitions - some systems that list 'cost price' of good will include shipping, warehousing and other overheads not just the cost of unit directly from the supplier.

Cost price in this sense will derive itself from the break even point.

        • @dasher86: Thanks guys I have 20+ experience in finance in big business to fall back on though and I can tell you creative accounting isn't a myth and the CFOs make an art of it.
Different areas of the business can have completely different costs or none at all depending on where the boss wants the profit to fall. This can depend on things like tax rates and bonuses.

Sure an accountant may do the maths but the CFO will nominate the formula used.

  • Any idea what "Electrical" items include?

    • Hitachi Super Wand

  • Does anyone know if the staff discount applies to gift card as well?

  • +4

Went there last year, nothing can be called bargain. I guess their staffs get ripped off dearly.

  • +1

Complete load of bull. Each staff member can give you different levels of discounts. They never give any customer "cost price" how would they survive if they did that to all customers? They mark up prices, say it's cheaper and everyone believes it. Like Harris Scarfe, those cast iron pots are $499, but they sell them to us for $89.99??? Pull the other one.

  • There sales are never good they mostly special prices where you can buy from other shops PS4 game RRP $99 on sale for 79$

  • Wouldn't staff get "Staff Prices" all the time?
