Unlimited Mobile Calls/SMS & 3GB Data - $33/Month (No Contract) @ Better Life Mobile (for Health Care Card Holders ONLY)

1261

ONLY ELIGIBLE FOR PEOPLE WITH A CENTRELINK HEALTHCARE CARD- NO LONGER A BARGAIN for most.

Three plans (no minimum term, month to month, pay in advance) on the Optus 3G/4G network:

  • BLC Mobile Phone Plan $33 per month 3GB data

  • BLC Mobile Phone Plan $43 per month 6GB data

  • BLC Mobile Phone Plan $53 per month 9GB data

Cheapest 4G plan I could find (with decent amount of data). Previously posted on OzBargain but required Centrelink Health Care card for these plans. Now they are available to everyone.

  • No signup or SIM charge
  • Data charged per kB
  • No live usage data app/website but will get usage warnings via SMS/email.
  • Data is capped and will be cut off for the month when you go over (will not be charged for excess usage but you will be cut off until the next month)
  • No international calls or international texts.

Also I ported out of my Voda $80 red cap 4 months into my 24 months. Gonna try fight them :P Will be interesting to see how this turns out.

  • data billing per KB or MB block?

    • +13

answer to that already in post. per kb.

      • +3

        kb or kB?

        • +1

          kB mate

        • +2

          kaybee

        • +4

lol don't really know (or really care to be educated) which is correct but I changed to kB for the sake of it

        • +3

I think KB would also be correct, eg, from Km.

        • +2

          @IVI: its actually km.

      • -2

        Thanks the negs :D

My comment was posted almost 2 hours ago when this info wasn't there.

It probably prompted the OP the modify and provide this crucial info to everyone else.

        You're welcome all

        • +1

There should be a code to characterise such plans, eg: "3GB-Mon-1K-Opt-4g-Pre-NoCont" (for: 3 GB of data, per mon, billed in 1 KB blocks, using Optus N/W, Pre-Paid, No Contract).

        • Maybe "NoC" is better than "NoCont" (with a Legend nearby)

        • +2

no actually it was there (6 minutes before you commmented) as it was the first thing i thought of when I considered the plan

        • +4

it was already there you didnt read it.

  • +2

Good price. I would have got it if this is available on Telstra network. I live in regional Victoria and Optus does not have good coverage in my area.

    • +3

agree, I would love to be on Telstra network too but it is significantly more expensive and I live in Sydney Metro so this will have to do.

      • Edwinlin88
You actually now live in a regional area without any Vodafone coverage and do not need to pay them anything as they failed to provide any service.

    • So would everyone on WP.
None of these "no name" providers are on the Telstra network… Are they??

      • Aldi use Telstra with limited 3G speed and coverage. Boost use the full 3G network with maximum speed &coverage. There are others too.

        • Telstra used to provide network service for Aldi Mobile as they did for Kogan Mobile but they don’t anymore unfortunately.
I used to use Kogan Mobile and was curious about Aldi Mobile. Aldi Mobile now gets it’s network service from Medion, and judging by this website http://www.productreview.com.au/p/aldi-mobile.html Aldi Mobile is no longer a good choice.

        • +1

@greenleo: Medion is the brand name of some of Aldi's electronic devices - they don't have a mobile network. Aldi mobile uses Telstra's 3G network.

      • Telechoice use Telstra

        http://www.telechoice.com.au/help/signing-up-online/which-ne…

Their $49 unlimited plan is decent value as you get 3GB of data and $80 international calls included.
        https://www.telechoice.com.au/kogan-offers

If you signup via the kogan-offers link it's only 12 month commitment rather than 24 month on their standard signup.

        Here's the PDS

        Important to note

        RATES FOR DATA
Data use is for uploads and downloads and is deducted in units of 10KB

    • try Lycamobile they use telstra 3G, not 4G though and for unlimited local calls and sms and only 2GB data for $29.90

  • Can't seem to find much in terms of reviews - anyone here used these guys before?

    • +2

      Yes, I have two accounts.

The staff are friendly and very hospitable. My only complaint would be they aren't always contactable (50/50 chance in business hours)

  • +9

    Link to Whirlpool forum http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2300456

Overall appears to be very good value with fast data speeds.

  • +2

I signed up with them yesterday. No problems in the signup process, expecting to get SIM card tomorrow.
They seem to have a small team, which is fine as I don't expect much "customer service" anyway.

Runs on Optus 3G / 4G network so would anticipate same reception/speeds as an Optus customer.

  • Seems like an excellent deal, cheers

  • -3

    prepaid or postpaid?

    • +3

"Minimum term. There is no minumum term. The service is month to month paid in advance"

I've realised my old Vodafone plan was prepaid too. They always charge a month in advance.

      • -5

My question is will I be charged for excess usage, e.g. data and international calls?

        • +18

maybe you should read the post and if it interests you, visit the website and read the T&Cs

        • +6

All your questions are answered by the website's FAQ.

        • +10

Wow did you even read the post?

        • +1

No international calls allowed, and they will stop your usage after your allowance. The idea is to have no excess charges.

  • No international calls or text I think

    • +4

No international calls or international texts.

      • -2

Does that mean it's not possible to use iMessage?

iMessage sends a once-off international SMS to validate your number before it activates.

        • +1

iMessage activation does work. They just send you an email warning about international texts after but don't do anything about it.

  • +31

Seems like the barrier to becoming an MVNO is pretty low. Let's start our own OzBargain mobile?

    • +7

this is actually a very good idea but at the same time I would like to support this business as it was originally created to support people on welfare etc

also I think it's not for profit?

      • +4

There seems to be a couple of not-for-profit telcos appearing lately.

Jeenee mobile is another one with a similarly competitive plan: http://www.jeenee.org.au/sim-packs

        • +1

yeh I was comparing Jeenee to this. This was cheaper :P

but Jeenee does offer plans for lower-usage customers.

    • -1

Is the idea that they can offer way better value as they wouldn't pay as much tax as a non for profit?

      • -1

no the idea is because they are not for profit

        • How do they survive then?

        • @The Quote Train:

They charge enough to cover costs, without seeking an excess (profit). Yes, they also have tax benefits which helps them charge lower prices.

For-profit companies aim to make excess profit for the company owners.

    • yeh, ensure we can pay by ing paywave

  • +4

Is it worth switching from the old Woolies prepaid plan?

Its $30 for 45 days and $500 credit with 5GB data.

    That's $20 a month with ~$330 credit and 3.33GB data on Optus 3G.

    • +1

I like your plan more as it's 33% cheaper, but it's on 3G.

While 4G isn't THAT great in Sydney I'd like to feel like I'm making to most of my 4G phone lol
Also not sure how much $330 in credit is, I like having unlimited so I don't need to think about it

      • Yeah I was about to add an edit asking whether there's anything around $30 with Woolies' data and credit but 4G. I guess BLC's $33 is close enough.

How is their 4G though? Is it actually as fast as one would expect or…?

That's where I'm stuck. $13 extra per month for 4G and unlimited credit…I don't need as much texting and call credit as much as I do data.

        • Optus wholesale 4G is significantly faster than their 3G.

I'm comparing my Virgin 4G download speeds (up to 33Mbps, averages 10-15Mbps) with my gf's TPG 3G download speeds (varies between 1-3 Mpbs) in Sydney metro area.

    • +3

Woolies which is now Optus is actually $26 for 45 days.!

    • I'm on that plan and am scared to leave as you can't go back on it if you want to.

I almost jumped at this, but I'm not going to because there is no international calls/text which the Woolies plan allows, and I personally use.

Also, if you top up online you get it for $26, and $26 for 45 days is just too good to give up…

      • +2

Not being able to go back is my only reason for holding back too. And that $26 / 45days setup. Becomes around $17 a month.

God dammit. If things keep going like this, I'll never jump off Woolies until Optus shuts it down lol.

    • +5

Never ever leave woolies (Optus) 26$ 45 days plan.it's the best cheap plan out there.

  • +7

If unlimited call or text are not desired, SpinTel would be a good alternative https://www.spintel.net.au/products/mobile. And I like the flexibility of SpinTel plan.

    • +2

I found SpinTel through the OzBargain google ad on this post :P
but yeh, good if you don't need unlimited calls/text

    • 3G or 4G? I can't tell by their site.

      • 4G Optus. Same as this one.

    • I like this option. And if at some point you decide you do need unlimited, it's only $3/month more.

      • +2

No there not there really bad one of the worst I looked at $2.11 for 2min call the 650 that comes with the $18 plan won't last long at all.

        • -3

          They are all like that.

        • @Gavman:no there not spinal is like 30 cents or something like that.

    • Have been using spintel for 2 months now but on my phone it keeps flickering between 4g and 3g which pisses me off so much. Connection around macquarie park is pretty bad and most of the time I have no network. A bit disappointed

    • Oh wow thanks for posting this. Honestly, I never text (imessage only) and rarely call but need the data.
I can get 1.5gb data and more than enough calls and texts for $21 on 4G (and not have to deal with the risk of Vaya who i was contemplating).

  • A current Health Care Card number if you are applying for the $31 plan

    • +1

There is no $31 plan listed. And there is no * next to health care card field. So it's not mandatory for $33 plan. :D

    • that plan doesn't exist anymore from my understanding. It was an old plan and they may still have some clauses referring to it on their T&Cs but now the standard plan is $33.

  • Is there a Sim card/sign up cost?

    • +2

no, just pay for your first month of plan

  • -3

Can I use this with my 3G enabled typewriter?

    • +6

Yes, iPhones work on this plan too.

  • Does this include mms? If it does I might sign up next month.

  • Going to get this when I get back home.

  • +4

Got screwed by live connected and vaya merger. Gonna take up this one.

    • How? If ur on vaya ur plan doesn't change

  • I'm jumping ship as soon as my vodafail contract is up.

    • i jumped ship 4 months into my 24. gonna get raped by the vodafone warship now :(

      • +1

if you get out of your vodafone contract it will cost you 20x80 - 1600?? how can you afford that?

      • Vodafail have a network guarantee clause. Complain about their lack of coverage in your home/workplace and they will have to investigate.

Hopefully they will let you off

        • Network guarantee is only within 30 days of starting (unless they've changed it recently)

  • +3

Better life does not charge a signup fee or sim card fee either.

  • thanks OP!

  • Unless something has changed, Better Life charges an extra $6 if you don't have a HCC., so the $33 becomes $39.
Might be best to double check that with them though. Can anyone confirm?

Also, I believe BLC is an Optus reseller rather than a MVNO. Expect full Optus 4G coverage - http://www.optus.com.au/network/mobile/coverage

  • So international SMS doesn't work?

  • +1

Just curious, why would you think it's okay to breach your contract with Vodafone just four months in? You're contractually obliged to pay out your plan.

    • will let u guys know how it pans out. dont want to put too mich detail out in public forum

  • How does the 6GB plan compare to amaysim unlimited ?

    • +3

$2 cheaper and another gb of data.

      • lol correct

      • +1

plus amaysim is 3G only. I'm about to drop amaysim for this.

        • I would of done the same but I had already ported over to boost mobile a few hours before this was posted so next month I switch to this.

  • The site is pretty grey regarding health care card, like OzJD has mentioned the pricing only applies for HCC holders which does reflect what is being advertised on the front page. However theres no mention of it anywhere else? Confusing!

  • +5

Just ordered the 33 dollar plan. No healthcare card used. LEAVING VAYA FOREVER! YAY! The unlimited calls and 3gb data are really hard to resist ;). Thanks OP.
