  • Nationality: South Korea
    Ethnicity: Asian
Served in South Korean Air Force for 2 years as part of national service, going to apply for PR as soon as I graduate or get married (whichever is sooner).

    • +1

Just FYI, ethnicity is your 'blood' and nationality is your passport, or what you choose to be (say, an Aussie if you feel like one).

      • +1

I am sure that you've meant to write that somewhere else, but just in case, I am Korean by birth and blood. I can give you the run-down of 42 generations of the family history that my uncles love, but I think that would be an overkill. As far as I concern, Koreans are just Asians in terms of ethnicity.

I hate the nationalistic approach of "Koreans as one ethnic group" thing, it makes little sense for me and I sort of refuses to spread that concept. Emphasising on ethnicity, for me, sounds like another remnant of history that stops us from being completely open to multicultural backgrounds. This is my opinion of course.

        • +3

          hmm ok, that's cool.

I suppose 'nationality', 'ethnicity' and 'race' can be interchanged sometimes, but in my view, there are clear and distinct differences between the terms. If you care to read, this is my opinion:

          e.g.
'Race' - Asian, African, Caucasian etc. Each originate from some different part of the world, e.g. Caucasians from Europe, Africans from Africa.

'Ethnicity' - subgroup within race. So one ethnic group from Asia is Chinese… Others include French, English etc. I don't consider 'American' nor 'Australian' (among others) to be an ethnicity, as the 'true' Americans and Australians are the American Indians and Aborigines respectively.

'Nationality' - your passport, and your culture. You choose your nationality. Do you choose to be American? Do you choose to adapt to your new country and its 'values'? Or should you rather be something else?

etc. No hating bro. Needless to say, I'm an accepting guy to anyone who's open.

        • +1

@inose: I hope I didn't sound angry. I am fairly peeved about those nationalistic people who forces their opinion about everything and I might have wrongly thought that you were one of them.

That being said, your opinion's fair enough. I probably should have thought about the terms more before commenting.

        • @inose:

For me the short of it is:

Race: what's in your blood / genes.

Ethnicity: what was around you and how you grew up.

          Nationality: passport/residency.

For example an Ethiopian (race) child adopted at birth, brought to Australia (nationality) by a traditionally Asian family (ethnicity).

On a side note I often refer to Australian born Asians as westerners rather than Asians mainly because the mindset and culture they adopt is more western than Asian depending on how traditional the Asian parents are (in my opinion).

Although Ethnicity can also mean other things (of which there are overlap in the other two terms you defined).

An ethnic group or ethnicity is a socially-defined category of people who identify with each other based on common ancestral, social, cultural or national experience.[1][2] Membership of an ethnic group tends to be defined by a shared cultural heritage, ancestry, myth of origins, history, homeland, language (dialect), or even ideology, and manifests itself through symbolic systems such as religion, mythology and ritual, cuisine, dressing style, physical appearance, etc.

    What are my kids? :P

    • +3

      Your children are Australian.

      • +5

I was born in a country where I was considered a crime. I had to be 'smuggled' out of the country and then flew to Australia to live with my grandparents. I have dual citizenship but I think of myself as Australian.

The wife was born in a country where multiculturalism is a way of life : learning about your neighbour's culture/religion forms part of the school curriculum. On independence day , you can see little kids, as young as 2 , proudly waving the four bands flag and singing the national anthem which goes :"Dear Motherland, Motherland of mine … Around thee we gather, as one people, as one nation…" very cute :)

Our children were born in Australia and therefore are Australians. However when they turn 18, they will be able to adopt a 2nd citizenship from any of the 5 countries that me, my wife or their grandparents are citizens of . So we like to think of them as first and foremost, citizens of the world ! :) As such we try to inculcate in them respect for and to be at ease with the rich tapestry of human life and the desire amongst people to express their own identity in the manner they see fit.

Strangely enough , they have very different approach to multi-culturalism. My son wants to be a sociologist/archealogist. He is fascinated by how different people live/used to live ,their culture, their languages and want to celebrate our differences. My daughter on the other hand, thinks that while we may look/do/believe in different things, at the end of the day , we all have the same basic needs, wants and desires. Therefore we are all the same. She wants to be a NASA scientist/astronaut and explore whats out there in outer space :)

          Great post.

When I said that your children were Australian, I was being a little flip, but I had another meaning in mind.

I think your children are a great illustration of what being Australian is all about. I think if you aren't at least a little mixed up about where you came from and who you are, you either aren't thinking hard enough - or you aren't Australian.

        • I was born in a country where I was considered a crime.

          Otoh Gunga - of course.

Dunno about that. Mom's married to an Irish guy. My brother is a redhead. Dad's in long term relationship with an Asian lady.

    • Depends on who their Father is

      • They both have my eyes , which was once described by a drunk chick as "sexy" because they are ,according to her "the exact colour of kermit the frog! OMG!" She then proceeded to take off her clothes to my great dismay…but that's a story for another time.

Edit: If I wasn't there at the birth, and the conception, I'd say my daughter's mother is Kristin Kreuk. She's her spitting image but with dimples.

it'd be interesting to know the breakdown of gender on OB.

There might have been a poll in the past. According to what Facebook has provided us (~22k Facebook likes on OzBargain's Facebook Page), it's

      • 38% Women
      • 61% Men
      • 1% Not declared

Not very useful stats. Percentage of women vs men as members might also be different to "has browsed OzBargain in the last 7 days". However this place certainly feels like having a lot more guys, i.e. even higher percentage of men if we can get the stats on those who have commented and posted deals.

Born in England - emigrated to Australia in 1988 - never looked back to live in "The Old Country". Took & passed our citizenship tests (exams) with flying colours -(99%) - failed on a question regarding sport-why that should be part of the criteria still do not understand.Since being here have grown & expanded our lives through hard work & determination - never asked for money from the government & always paid our own way.We now are Aussies & proud of it.

    • +5

It's funny you got 99%. Most people born here would probably fail.

    • Says the guy that 90% of the time posts threads selling their own stuff…

    • How about improving yourself so that you can contribute to society, instead of whining for a start…

Contribute why? Some immigrant will contribute for half the wage … . .

        • +2

Yeah… There are those, immigrants or not, who will be happy to do your job and more, for less.

I guess there are two ways of looking at this.

          1. Improve yourself and become a better individual, so that it becomes harder for you to be replaced. You'll also have better opportunities with more skills and a brighter future.

          2. Just give up and complain. Become a part of the welfare system, because why bother…

    Brief History of Last Thursdayism

You are the creator of the universe. You created this universe last (that is, this most recent) Thursday at noon, and it will expire next (that is, this upcoming) Thursday at noon. Everything you perceive as predating last Thursday was planted by You in order to create the impression of an ancient universe governed by natural laws. This planted evidence includes all of your memories and all physical evidence of prior events.

You created the universe as a test for you. Everyone who is not you is an aspect of You, placed here to complete the environment for the test.

The purpose of this one-week test You created for yourself is to discover the limits of your own judgment and character.

  • HI, don't mean to sound like spoilsport but how is this an Ozbargain question of any kind, relating to goods or services queries/ or a bargain of a lifetime?? Perhaps I should now ask the Ozbargain question "Are you single/partnered" or "Howmany children do you have"? I am sure there will be plenty of polite replies however I still do not see the relevance in this particular blog.
