5OFFKICKSTARTER

I've been following the OSMC project as I am an avid RASPBMC user, and it's finally available for purchase with mailing list subscribers getting 5% off with this code.

Think of it as a raspberry pi on steroids. It's got CEC so it works with TV or BluRay remotes over HDMI.

Vero Tech Specs
Dual Core 1Ghz Cortex A9 ARMv7 processor
1GB DDR3 RAM
Gigabit Ethernet
Integrated 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi
Bluetooth 4.0
Integrated IR receiver
Optical S/PDIF output
2x powered USB ports
HDMI 1.4 with CEC (allows you to control Vero with your TV remote)
Full HD 24Hz output
3D ready

    Questionable… Need more details.
Can it play BR file structure?
    Which containers?
    Can it pass-through HD Audio?

Superficially, seems too expensive for something so little above Pi and not-ready for UHD.

    • +2

Yeah the lack of specific details on it make it hard to know if it's any good.
More than likely the ethernet is run through the USB controller, so it will be capped at 480Mbps and not true gigabit.
At 5x the cost of a raspberry pi, even with a remote it doesn't seem like much of a bargain

      • It depends on your needs, the raspberry pi is my defacto media player. If you don't need it, OSMC will run on the Pi I believe, and I think it's free being the "OS" open source, but don't quite me - early access on a pre-installed raspberry pi is available to buy.

I actually sent all your specific questions directly to Sam, if he replies I will advise you.

        Quick Response!

        Hi Mitch,
Yes — it can play the BD structure. That's M2TS, MKV.
It can pass through HD audio (i.e. DTS-HD MA, TrueHD, etc)
It is over USB 2.0, but you can push above 470Mbits (the normal USB 2 speed) using TCP Segment offloading which will let you get a healthy 600.

Let me know if you have any more questions
        Best
        Sam

How do you contact Sam? I wanna ask if it can playback BD ISO and 3D BD ISO files ripped using AnyDVD HD or not.

        • +1

Yes — it can play the BD structure.

Does that mean it'll support BD-Java (for interactive menus)?

Truly, the creator must be more clear about what is and isn't supported, in writing on his page.

        • @AlexF:

BD Structure is not the same as BD ISO. Think of BD ISO as a zip file and the BD Structure as the zip file unzipped.

And yeah regarding the BD Java menu even the latest media players can't do that anymore because of Cinavia, you need to have a HTPC for that.

        • BD Structure is not the same as BD ISO.

          I haven't mentioned BD ISO.

latest media players can't do that

Cinavia and interactive menus are unrelated.

If it's targeting enthusiasts, why no twin HDMI with optional A/V split?

      • +1

I can't say for sure, but it's keeping the cost reasonably low, less than a HTPC (brix or NUC) and uses less power

      • As a matter of interest why would you want this? For a projector and TV off the same box???

        • +1

HDMI-1 goes to TV, HDMI-2 goes to audio processor. [My practical case: TV supports PS3's "Deep Color", Yamaha receiver, cannot - goes blank.]

  • Been Googling for information to see if it can replace my dedicated HTPC but no luck. Same questions I have like AlexF but can't seem to find anything so far…

    • BD ISO?
    • HD audio passthru?
    • 3D?

Off the site [And yes, it does 3D, also off the site, AND it has SPDIF so there's your audio sorted]:

SPDIF does not passthrough HD audio.

That guy is a genius. I hope this project really takes off and he makes lots out of it because his contribution to the RasPi scene has been invaluable in my opinion :)

  • +2

Looks OK but for USD$200 you can get a Chromebox or similar which is a lot more powerful.

    • +2

That might be true, however this has top-notch XBMC support and integration. For those who love RASPBMC and XBMC in general it's ideal. the CEC integration means you have one thing you can navigate using your tv remote.

  • Does anyone know if you can run Rasbian (or other linux distro) off this? I wouldn't use the HTPC features, but possibly have use for a RasPi like device with a processor/memory spec bump and faster NIC.

Can't see an answer on the website, nor with quick googling.

    • It wouldn't have the GPIO to be useful, probably better off with a possibly hacked android box.

      • Build I've got in mind wouldn't need GPIO. Am looking on Android box front already, just really liked the small footprint of this.

Could never get Raspbmc to work consistently. Having said that it was a while ago.
Went for Openelec instead, found it to be more stable in my opinion.

    • +1

It was unstable for me about a year ago when I tried on a friends Pi. Just bought a B+ Pi and have to say it works very well (very, very close to my full media PC running XBMC).

Does anyone know what CPU/SOC it is actually using?

    At a quick guess, maybe a RK3066?

  • I need something that can play rmvb. I'm over the whole converting rmvb to mkv

    • see below: it can

  • I just got a reply from Sam regarding your comments as he can't post here.

    Hi Mitch,

I signed up a Ozbargain but I can't comment for some reason unfortunately. Please let everyone know I'm happy to answer questions by email and they are more than welcome to copy and paste it on to Ozbargain.

Answer: it's an i.MX6 SoC based device. The tech specs are fully outlined on the https://getvero.tv site. I understand that some people want some more details, and I'm happy to give them, but at the same time, I could not make the site too detailed or it could put some people off.

Answer: It's supported (RV9/10 aka RMVB) works up to 1080p

    Hope this helps you guys
