  • Any thoughts on the pre-built system?

    • +2

Looks like a decent system -dual core i3 will handle most jobs -except video encoding, multicore games ( eg. battlefield 4). It would be comparable to a mainstream i5/i7 laptop. Should play entry level games on the integrated cpu.

no ssd (lots of ozbargain deals -but you'll have to reinstall windows 7)
no dedicated video card -could probably fit something mid-range (low power requirements eg nvidia gtx750 ti)

In a few years upgrade ram to 8gb (my computer atm runs fine on 4gb with 30+ browser tabs open, word docs, skype etc.)

      • Thanks for the reply. :)

        • cept i would buy form anyone else but PLE.

so rep is watching but not commenting on what seems like dodgy claims and other dodgy practices.

if the "before sale" service is this bad,can you imagine what the after sales service would be like?

        • +2

@nosdan: There is nothing dodgy about PLE and we were not trying to be misleading. We are going through every piece of feedback to make sure that anything we do in the future on OzBargain is received better. OzBargain is a tough crowd (that's a compliment!) and in this instance we didn't hit the mark.

We wouldn't be in business for nearly 25 years (1991 we started) and have a team of over 40 people if we were dodgy.

Not sure what I can add to this thread to make everyone happy so I figure it's best to let it run it's course and look to improving anything in the future. We don't try to hide negative feedback or moderate comments.

We're just trying to bring what we thought were some clearance bargains to the site and everyone has had their opportunity to comment on it and give their opinion, that's the great part of this over an email newsletter - the feedback.

dual core i3 will handle most jobs -except video encoding, multicore games

Best to clarify for people who are not technical.

        except video encoding

Not true at all, anything will encode (re-encode) video, it's the speed at which it gets the job done that is up for conversation. Less processing power = longer waiting times. Even single core processors will encode video just fine.

        multicore games

Fast dual core processors will be able to handle most modern multicore games with the bottleneck likely being the videocard/ram in most cases. Even though the recommended or minimum specs of the game contradict this people have posted reviews on youtube debunking the myth that quad cores are needed when in fact dual cores handle the job. I'm not sure about BF4 however have not researched that game myself.

you have some funky ideas mate

If that's below cost you need to find a better wholesaler. Where's the evidence? Granted, there's a few accessories that have large discounts, but most discounts are very, very average…..

EDIT: Asus ROG OC PANEL cheaper here (at a bricks and mortar place in Perth!): http://shop.mcgtech.com.au/motherboard/intel-socket-1150/pro…

Intel Xeon Quad Core E3-1225V3 cheaper at numerous http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=Intel+Xeon+…

I do acknowledge the free shipping offer for orders over $50 that might benefit some!

      Hi Ticket65,

Not all products are below cost.. its a pretty big list so going through all our competitors and static ice for every product is always feasible.

Thanks for those two though I've adjusted the price to make them cheaper :)

      Always happy to get feedback!

Not all products are below cost

Then you might want to adjust the title - misleading

        • Done - there are more than 300 items in the list

        • +6

@PLE Computers: if your going to claim "some prices below cost" you need to state which item(s) are actually below cost so people can independently verify your claims otherwise you simply get fobbed off as making dodgy/dishonest claims

        • +12

Rep…been a customers of your since you started working out of your little shop in Gnangara estate. I think you do a good job of keeping prices competitive in Perth, but here's a tip for when you 'advertise' on OzBargain. We're a savvy bunch, and frown upon being misled.

A simple solution (that would also help potential purchasers too) - if it's below cost, put that next to the description of the item. Shows your being honest :-) Otherwise, I'm suggesting your going to be fair game for critcsm!

Just trying to help you out here…..

  • PLE Cockburn & Wangara is on amex shop small.

I went yesterday and they had no problems letting me pay half on one amex and half the other. There is a surcharge on amex however. Add the items to your cart then select collect in store and pay in store, you will get a sms when its ready.

  • +8

Your cost is too high, I see.

  • +6

Here are some tips for you rep..

I checked static ice to compare you Nvidia range of GPUs and pretty much all of them were standard price or a few dollars cheaper.

As a customer in the market when you say "below cost" and I check your prices and see nothing beneficial I will instantly dismiss your store and go somewhere else. Hopefully you learn from this little piece of advice.

    • +2

Yep, when I see below cost, I'm thinking there will be something that sparks my interest, not feeling it atm

    • +3

just to add to that comment…

if your prices are just a few dollars below to the standard pricing… then you can forget about me thinking about your shop during the 'non-sales' days. (just like how people treat Myer/DJ's "special sales" BS)

not demanding you to lower all the prices, perhaps you need to rethink your sales strategy.

      just saying.

Quite a few products have been steadily declining in price - and will continue to do so until they sell. I've updated the "Old Price" to be Manufacturer RRP which more accurately describes that column.

      • +9

I've updated the "Old Price" to be Manufacturer RRP which more accurately describes that column.

around here claiming bullshit RRP's that you never actually sold at does not go down well. id advise changing it back to the last/usual price you sold at.

      • +9

I know alot of businesses do it but it really annoys me to no end and the ACCC are useless when it comes to these issues.

        https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/prices-receipts/price-disp…

‘savings’ or ‘discount’ statements when compared to the recommended retail price (RRP), but the goods have never been sold at the RRP or the RRP does not reflect a current market price.

      • +4

@rep, the reason many here get pissed off is because we are professionals, we just don't pay RRP, ever! so comparing RRP is meaningless

        • +1

"professionals" I see what you did there :D

  • +19

I will probably get negged for this, but people who knows the IT industry in Australia should be aware how hardware margins are EXTREMELY thin (thanks to MSY/CPL/ITestate etc) therefore OP might not be lying when its "below cost".

I know for facts and can prove between distributor/retailer prices, its a norm for MSY to sell hardware with $1-$5 margins.

    Great for the consumer though!

    • +2

i know, it's the case in many other countries too. The problem in question often isn't with the price, but the 'selling' of the price (hey look at this! 90% below some BS RRP!) that people take issue with.

if the price isn't that great, the most people will do here is to say "not really a bargain"…. trying to pull a RRP style discounting, or worse a "increase price to make discount looks bigger" one…. will ruffle some feathers. (and earn some negs)

not saying the OP is heading there, but it seems walking a fine line there.

  • Probably 2012 'cost' prices.

  • Anything good?

  • I don't doubt many items are below cost price, because cost price often doesn't factor in rebate from manufacturers.

For example. Cost price of a monitor is $100, and it is sold for $99. Manufacturer rebate $5 on each monitor sold for volume of over xxxxx monitors.

Edit: It doesn't matter retailer claim the discount to be, the final pricing is what matters to consumers.

Value is within the eyes of its behold(ozbargain)er.

    • +1

unless things have changed a lot since i was in IT thats not quite how it works. its more volume discounts (either per sale or mroe often based on monthly turnover)

      $100 monitor at retail
buy 1 from wholesaler get it for $99
buy 10 from wholesaler and get it for $95
buy 100 from wholesaler get it for $$85
buy 1000 from wholesaler and get it for $75

which is why larger chains can sell things cheaper than smaller single businesses can buy them for

      • Yes. Agreed.

        Sorry, didn't bother elaborating.

        EDIT: Sorry, didn't read correctly.

Volume based discount - yes. but the discount is marginal

The rebate from the manufacturer (not wholesaler) is the reason why retailers can afford to sell at cost.

Bing Lee are one of the many who is happy to do an openbook deal with customers, tabling the "cost price".

      • its more volume discounts

AND end of month settlement discounts
        AND supplier rebates
        AND promotional/campaign pricing rebates

all of which doesn't get factored into "cost" price as this all gets after paying.

I had a shop show me (years ago) their invoice for a particular item which they were selling at cost + 1%. I asked what they defined as cost… their invoice value they paid or what the product actually cost once all rebates and discounts were factored in which don't appear on the invoice? They were speechless.

        • +2

"cost" is also a bit of a loaded word. most people think of cost as what it costs the retailer to buy the product but when most places claim "cost" is usually cost to get the item sold which includes factors like (but not limited to) transport, rent on premises, staff wages etc etc, so the total cost to get the item from warehouse to out the door in the new buyers hands. this "cost" plus 1% would actually make for a very tidy profit margin with most companies as they can obviously pad out there other "costs" ("oh, we calculate 3 hours wages per item because thats the min we can employ someone" etc)

"cost" is simply another BS marketing ploy like RRP is. it dosnt really mean anything in real world terms because they can fudge the costs any way they choose

  • Picked up a Razer BlackWidow 2013 Ultimate (MX Blue) Mechanical Keyboard for $99. I can't see it being sold cheaper on OzB for that particular model.

  • REP if you get a chance I would love to see some decent discounts on the Intel NUC or Gigabyte Brix range. Many computer stores have been doing great prices on the units recently!

  • EGVA GTX970 ACX 2.0 $449 good pricing

  • Hi Rep.
I'm trying to purchase a GTX 970 which is only in stock in Wangara. Because the only shipping option from there is Startrack, the FREESHIP4YOU code isn't working for me.
    Halp?

Trying to order keyboard and mousepad, but it says local store out of stock.

    What does that mean?

  • Hi,

I have a very bad experience in ordering clearance/ex-demo items from PLE.

I order an ex-demo pump from PLE which the store claim to be in stock from another store in another state. (I'm in Vic)

I paid for the item and I received an email from them saying that the ordered is processed.

Then couple of days later, I received another email saying that the stock is in transit to the Melb store. However, I received an text message from them like a week later saying that the stock has actually been sold.

To make matters worst, they offered me a crappier but new model pump which is more than the ex-demo price. I was willing to pay a new and better pump and just needed free shipping to compensate the mistake they did.

So I ask for free shipping to compensate my lost of wait time and the delay which they promptly refused.

So this is not a bargain for me.

I will not deal with company that has does not believe in customer service.

and they a lost customer here.

Just my 2 cents and making u guys aware.

    Adre.

  • I don't see any items being marked as below cost?
    Where's the bargain here?

This looks more like a generic advertisement.
For that matter a potentially misleading advert…
