Any idea on what the actual prices are though?

    • +1

They have a catalogue sale on atm that might give you some idea on price.

Repcos regular price for 10W40 10 Tenths is $69
Its the same price as Supercheap: http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Penri…

I'm about to go to Repco to buy a deep socket so I might take some snaps of other regular Penrite prices while I'm there.

        HRP 5 5W-40 $63.99 - 40% = $38.39
        10 Tenths Racing 10W-40 and 15W-50 $73.99 - 40% = $44.39

Looks like the 10 Tenths went up in price, also they seem to have less of a range than last time, I bought the 10 Tenths premium 0W-50 a few months ago and its not there now.

But my Repco is a very small store, I might drive to the city on the weekend for a bigger selection.

        • Good price on the HRP 5, but doesn't compare to Castrol Edge for $27.49 recently (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/163258)

        • @PcisT:

I still have 2 bottles of the Castrol Edge from deals months ago, HRP 5 is a better oil than the Edge 5W-30 (both are group 3 semi synthetics, due to legalities are allowed to display fully synthetic on the container) but when it comes to oil for my buzzbox I'm not too concerned which I use long as its a decent semi or full synthetic at a good price.

With my good car I've only use 10 Tenths and 10 Tenths Premium so far as I'll usually grab a bottle if Repco has 30% off and I don't have a spare or 2 already.

Currently I about 10 unopened 5-6L bottles and 2 part bottles of Semi and fully Synthetic bottles as well as 2 20L drums. For me its hard to pass up a good deal on good oils.

        • Thanks

  • Repco is normally slightly higher than Supercheap Auto on Penrite prices.

Where was this ad taken out of?

    • +1

      From a email.

      • okay, thanks

Nice one - I switched to Penrite Oils a while ago, great Aussie product and can highly recommend!

  • is it true you get extra 10% off, on top of 40% if you're VIP member?

    • VIP & RACV/RACQ/NRMA discounts only apply to full priced items.

      • so the 40% is for everyone or just VIP members?

        • It was a VIP email with the catalog, usually the same email is sent out to other subscribers a few hours later or the following day.

VIP membership is free, details are in the first post here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/144395

        • Just got the regular email (VIP's get a VIP email earlier).

Its not just for VIP's, its for everyone.

      • i have the VIP car club card and i never received discounts with it i even asked the guy what this card does and they told me they don't even know & never seen it before..

  • well, thank god I didn't bite the bullet on the 30% last week.

Ahhh… I remember signing up for a free motor oil sample from Penrite 2 years ago. After receiving an email from Penrite every week for a year with the headline "Sorry we couldn't send you that free motor oil due to such high demand but if you wait we'll try our best to get it to you ASAP. AND BY THE WAY FOR A LIMITED TIME SEE OUR RANGE OF GREAT PRODUCTS AT A DISCOUNT SPECIALLY FOR YOU" marketing scam, still no motor oil.

  • This would cover gear and diff oil too, wouldn't it?

    • +1

Yeah that would come under lubricants.

  • Excellent thanks OP saved me 30 bucks

Does Repco sell the Motorcyles oil fluids. If so, Time to stack up alot :O.

    • Should do if its a larger store, maybe not if its a smaller store.

    • Good point. Just bought a motorbike…have to start preparing for that too.

  • This would also cover Penrite Copper EZE anti seize grease? I would expect that's considered a lubricant as well?

    • I assume it would.

  • Would you recommend 10w-30 10tenths for a Subaru WRX STI 09?

    • +2

The website recommends 5w-50 for a 09 STi (stated as substitute where 10w-40 is used which the handbook recommends for hot climates, hard driving or dusty area).

I used 10w-40 10 tenths a few times then switched to the premium 10 tenths 0w-50 (recommended on the Penrite website for my WRX).

Its a real confusing time to buy Penrite oils actually, I believe they are dropping all the "extra ten" marketing and changing all the labels and reverting back to weights without the "extra ten". For example the 10 tenths premium 0w-50 will now become 0w-40 instead.

      As seen here: http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products-categ.php?id_categ=1&i…
But most of the website media doesn't reflect the changes yet: http://www.penriteoil.com.au/POS/10Tenths_Brochure.pdf

However the website oil picker tool changed from recommending the premium 0w-50 to 0w-40 to reflect the changes in their marketing.

I would choose something with higher protection than a 30 weight oil, either 40 (or 50 if its the "extra 10").

Depending on how hard you drive the car and if there is any engine modifications then you would probably benefit from using something thicker again.

I baby my WRX at least until the oil is at temp (using aftermarket oil temp gauge) so 0w-40 or 5w-40 (not including the "extra 10") are OK for me, but if you were to drive hard with a low weight oil before its up to temp you risk spinning a bearing in boxer engines. Thats where you would benefit from using a 10w-40 or 15w-40 but I find 15w-40 too thick when cold especially in the winter, you can hear the engine sounds dry and scratchy for the first minute or two and metal on metal sound is never good.

If you wanted to pick the best weight oil for your car it would require buying (or borrowing) a oil pressure gauge then checking the oil pressure at temp to make sure it matches the specified oil pressure for your car, it can be a costly process costing around $50 give or take each oil change until you get it right.

Also for all Subarus make sure to use genuine Subaru filters, most "compatible" ones have a pressure sensitive bypass valve thats way off the specified bypass pressure for Subarus. If there is too much variation you could be either constantly bypassing the oil filter all the time or not getting any oil through your engine on start ups.

  • I'm still waiting on their free brake fluids from about 2 years ago :S

    • From Penrite or Repco, or was that the brakesdirect.com.au promotion?

I remember getting Penrite Super DOT 4 for free from Brakes Direct / GSL Rallysport.

    Can someone confirm this?
I went to a repco store this morning and the catalogue sale discounts were on but when i asked the sales person if there as a weekend sale on penrite lubricants at 40%, he said only whats in the catalogue.

    • +1

Picked up 3 bottles today, there is advertising out the front of the store and in store as well.

You should have just asked them to scan it and tell you the price as its already reduced 40% on their system, that's told by the HQ's computer what price everything is regarding catalogs and specials as the individual stores don't change the prices.

    • +1

Picked up 2 bottles of Penrite Oil this morning, was 40% off. It should scan out with 40% off.
