thats super cheap! people seem to hate these

    • +32

it is fairly average… great if you want a cheap phone for Apple ECO system but still expensive for what it is.
I would just get a Nexus 5 for cheaper or a brand new Red Nexus 5 for $49 more.

In fact lets get serious if apple ECo system is not an issue lets compare this to the 1520 lumia I just got for $34 dollars more at Harvey norman, or even the lumia 1020 with camera grip for 397 at harvey norman.

but if you need an apple, this is the "cheapest" option… so I still up voted the find.

        • -1

Chroma? is that short for Chroming too much?

        • -1

Best Camera Phones in the world, my friend.

Not to mention, one of slickest Mobile UI's out of the lot.

          Don't talk unless you know.

      • +1

People don't buy an Apple iPhone for the phone itself, they buy it for iOS.

        • +2

I disagree, most people buy it as a status symbol.

        • +10

Lollipop destroys ios8. The game has changed.

        • +1

          @PainToad: How that?

My Lollipop OTA upgrade crashed halfway through. So did the one for my wife on a different phone. Then the power usage: nothing running, a day at home, so phone not used at all, and battery dead flat after less than 24 hours. That did not happen with KitKat either. Google lost its way.

I still would not buy an Apple phone due to the very bad value for money they offer, but Lollipop sure as hell is not the reason for staying on Android.

        • then they're stupid if buying for status only. other won't give a shite about your 'expensive' items, unless those who hold the same value in life

        • @PainToad: Cant wait for WhizzFizz

      • don't see Lumia 1020 at HN.

        • That sale ended

      • +2

People buy because the brand Apple, nothing to do with the specs or whatever.

        • +3

To over simplify things and say people only buy the iPhone for the Apple brand is ignorant.

have you spend a day actually using the iPhone ?
have you tried to get IOS technical support?
have you tried to get Android technical support?
and compare the 2 tech support experiences?

I use both iPhone and Android phone.

I use them side by side every day.
Yes I have jail broken the iphone and Rooted the Android phone.
          both are good.
Over time though, I find myself using the iPhone more and more.
I still like my android phone, it just feel less relevant.
It's the overall user experience, the interface and the Apps that made the different.
(Android lacks the unified user experience compared to IOS)
the hardware specs means nothing if all Apps are running smooth. I don't want over power hardware, I want "just enough" hardware power to run Apps. Think about it, why would you HAVE TO worry that the phone won't have enough power to run Apps?

Sounds like a good deal, but the timing of this article is uncanny.

    http://www.news.com.au/technology/gadgets/apple-to-kill-off-…

    • why did they use iphone 5s picture in the article?

    • -2

"Apple to kill off its giant FLOP, the iPhone 5c"
      (emphasis mine).

That's Telstra… symbol of lousy value [& how businesses work in AU?], IMO.

This "deal" seems to show False economy - unless
you can get it Unlocked for very little $$, IMO.

    • +4

The handset, which was released last year, was criticised for it gaudy neon colours. The company’s former advertising executive Ken Segall spoke about the failure of the phone earlier in the year, saying Apple “doesn’t do cheap”

LOL so this DH justifies its poor sales because apple is too cool to be doing cheap, rather than the fact they put out an inferior phone to the 5C at only $100 bucks less.
It didn't sell because it looked or felt cheap, it failed simply due to the price fail.

      • +11

I don't think anyone who is familiar with Apple products would buy an iPhone 5c, it's basically a cheap spinoff of the iPhone 5 with a plastic shell. As as you said, the problem was that the price wasn't any cheaper than the existing metallic iP5 and the perceived resale value of the 5c would probably be lower than that of the 5.

Most people, from what I've seen of WP and Reddit, would usually upgrade their iphone on a certain upgrade cycle (if they were on a IP4, they'd upgrade to the IP5, and if they were on the 4s, they'd wait until the 5s comes out).
The 5C was released alongside the 5S, so obviously the 5S sales would eclipse the 5c.

        • +1

          exactly!

        • I think the introduction of iPhone 5C has something to do with the way paint is applied to iPhone 5. Apple didn't really want to make more iPhone 5, but they can't use the fix they introduced to iPhone 5S (coz. they would be like admitting they made a mistake in iPhone 5).

5C has higher resale value on FeeBay because an iPhone 5 would be 1 year older than iPhone 5C normally and the paint issue tends to make a second hand iPhone 5 looks oldish. Most 5Cs would be in better condition. Apple did change the 4G/GPS chip in iPhone 5C to the same one used in 5S.

        • @netsurfer: I thought iPhone 5 was discontinued because Apple wanted to cut cost. They usually reduce the price for their older generation, I heard that the profit got reduced significantly for iPhone 5, so low that Apple actually decided to change the aluminium casing to plastic.

    • +7

It doesn't make it a bad phone though. It's still an iPhone 5 with a plastic back - which still has pretty good performance.

If I were looking for a phone this size an in this price range, I'd probably look at the Xperia Z1 Compact, also $400 from JB, just because it is a year newer (and for me, is a bit nicer looking).

    • +4

It seems a shame, since the 5C was a good idea done not-quite-right.

  • +2

same price for pink & green too.

  • +1

    That's really cheap good find.

      • +1

Where does it say that its locked to Telstra?

        From Telstra website:

"So when we launched the iPhone 5s and 5c last month, for the first time, we worked with Apple to make sure we were able to sell the handsets already unlocked. Now we’ve teamed up again and managed to automatically unlock the iPhone 5.

This means, if you own an iPhone 5 with Telstra and you’re heading overseas, or switching network providers, you no longer need to call us or go through the steps Danielle’s outlined. You just put in the new SIM, verify your iTunes details and you’re good to go."

        http://exchange.telstra.com.au/2013/11/15/iphone-5-5s-5c-now…

        • +2

If this is really then very nice

        • +2

From what I understand, prepaid are still locked, postpaid aren't. But I might be wrong.

Also it doesn't say its prepaid in the listing, but when you search for it, on the left it is listed under the "Telstra Pre Paid" Category.

      Must be some in Victoria.

Someone said they are also available in some Telstra Stores, but who knows.

    • +7

      Are you asking for negs?

    • +3

This is actually a reasonable comment in terms of open or closed O/S… LOL jokes!
you also can't compare the iphones camera to the Nokia lumia cameras though, not even the 6+ matches my old 1020 and I would say in terms of everything but res that the lumia 1520 is even better even before the denim update comes out…
Music I have xbox music, seamless streaming on my surface and phone…
Call quality? who phone calls now days?… but if you need HD phone calling ok, I'll take my 1520 with rich audio surround sound recording… what does the iPhone 6+ have after all these years… still mono recording? still the same camera sensor? still the same crappy location for the camera…?

A reasonable price for this iphone would be $349 max… then it would get my attention.

    • +5

This is not the 5s, this is the 5c. Yesteryear's (2 years old) hardware wrapped in a new shell.

      • The experience is similar. Slightly worse battery life

    • +5

Unless you actually have both Nexus 5 and iPhone 5S, you cannot offer an objective view. Comparing Galaxy Nexus against iPhone 5S is not a fair comparison. I have both Nexus 5 and iPhone 5S, and I use my Nexus 5 more. As for jailbreak, it is great. You can do a lot more and does compensate the restrictions Apple placed.

Can you attach a PDF from one e-mail to another e-mail (no, I am not talking about forwarding an e-mail with an attachment), I am talking about getting attachment from e-mail #1 and reply e-mail #2 and add / include the attachment from e-mail #1. Android phones can do that without rooting. A jailbroken i-device can also do that. A non-jailbroken iPhone, unfortunately, cannot do that.

      • I bought the nexus 5 for the mrs. I loaded it with all her txts photos and music. I've used its camera (which is horrible). So yes I can compare easily

Very similar experience on 5/5C/5s. And to a similar extent to the 6 as well (despite the obvious difference in size)

I must say emails and attachments aren't handled well on the iPhone. But I have a tablet a laptop and a work computer so the chances of me replying to an email off my phone are pretty non existent though of course your experience may vary

        • +1

A comparison needs to be fair. Purposely picking the weakness of one phone and not mentioning the strengths is not the way to compare phones. Nexus 5 camera is not horrible (not great, but not horrible). How about the screen resolution? Nexus 5 wins that one right? And, that's not forget about the cost.

There is no need to trash either iOS or Android. The reality is that they are borrowing / copying each other's ideas nowadays. Also, competition is good for the consumers.

Likewise for jailbreak, it is great and the key reason that it is not as popular as it could be is due to the way Apple only allows you to upgrade to the latest iOS. If you could easily restore to an iOS version to your choosing, jailbreak would be much more popular.

i went to the reverse i was iphone user went to android .. :) wont be going back…

      I actually agreed with him 100%… :D

    • Hahahahaha… Cool Story Bro

    • It's almost 2015 and version 8 of iOS - you still can't set default apps. GG.

  • +8

cheap, but it is basically an iPhone 5 which is almost 2ys ago,

  • This is also available at all Telstra stores (where stock is available) but it is locked to Telstra as mentioned, only post-paid iPhones are unlocked. The cost of unlocking it varies, it can range from $100-$27.50, depending on the length you own it.

  • This is a decent deal but I would say the other deal recently posted for an iPhone5 is better: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/172121

    • +1

This one has a two year warranty (1 year apple and 1 year consumer)

    • +1

that is refurbished US stock, how is it better, even this deal is crap, 400 for 2 year old phone, yes it came out last year, but is has the same hardware as 5 which came out 2 years ago

      • Thought it was new from the description; anyway I take it back as the deal has been pulled.

  • +12

$399 is what they should have been sold for to begin with.

  • +1

Fan fight aside, I cant seem to find one shop has stock

Anyone know if you can use Telstra MVNO like Boost or Aldi with a Telstra locked iPhone?

    • +2

      Yes. Confirmed.

  • And apple laugh all the way to the bank…

  • Anyone having problem accessing their website from overseas? I keep getting access denied.

  • How does this compare to the Mpie G7 I bought a few weeks ago for $185 delivered?

    • +3

How does it compare in what respect? One is less than half the price of the other, one is an apple phone, one is android, your question is a little vague.
They are both phones, beyond that any other comparisons are subjective based on individual needs.

      • +3

        Can still be compared.

iPhone 5C has a better CPU, better camera (both stills and videos are better), more storage (32GB on this one), more 4G bands and a better screen (IPS, G7 does not have IPS screen, just TFT). G7 has more RAM.

Apple's after sales service is top notch. As for the OS, that's just say they are about the same.

  • +6

To be honest with you I like this phone, I have been using one since the now infamous Kogan deal on Ebay. It's everything I want in an iPhone. It's fast and smooth and works for me . I have tried Sony and Nokia but they do not work as well for me in speed and touch response ( this could be because I use an IPad too ). It's not the best looking phone out there but I just wrap mine in a case anyway. Maybe they should of thrown them out at this price to begin with - I think the response would of been much greater.

    • +1

Same here. Had iPhone 4, Samsung s3, nexus 4, iPhone 5s before and now iPhone 6. Still prefer IOS.

  • apple haters here we go…

          android fan
          and android fan

  • -3

Guys - you know if I did not have any iPhone 5c handsets available to deliver or to pick up I could sell them for $199.

  • +6

About the deal first. The iPhone 5C you get may be already unlocked. I called Tel$tra and wanting to find out how much they will charge me to unlock it. I was told it is already unlocked. Tried an Optus SIM and yes, it is unlocked.

The SIM starter pack you get appears to be the $30 one (and it says the expiry date of the credit depends on the plan), unclear whether it is the same as one of those $30 starter pack ones. The phone comes with iOS 7.1.1 so not yet forced to use iOS 8.

Still not happy I paid yet another Apple tax. Now, I need another good Android deal. Need to balance my support for both camps.

    • +3

Grab one from local JB store. Store told me it will be $150 to unlock, but I called up Telstra and was told had already been unlocked. Tested with a Optus SIM card, confirm it is unlocked!

      • Can someone please verify if they are all unlocked and usable on the Optus 4G network?

        • Can someone please verify if they are all unlocked and usable on the Optus 4G network?

Ok. I will do that for you.

        • Phone is for girlfriend's mum. Works with Optus prepaid. Not sure about 4G.

  • +1

    Poor man's iPhone…

  • +2

This is a great deal. Compairing it to a Lumia or a 2 year old Android phone makes little sense (I have had all 3). It's still a fast enough phone with one of the best screens, a superior camera and a decent 32GB storage. Don't forget phones have come at a point were the next model up will only marginally be better (the difference in performance between the 3G and 3GS was in my opinion bigger than the difference between the 5 and the 6). It will be supported for at least another 2 years and iOS means the best range of (regularly updated) apps. The yellow colour isn't too bad but a cover will help.

  • How difficult to unlock iPhone?

    Just read it was unlocked.

    • I called up telstra and they said it is locked.

  • I went to the World Square store and got a green one - will probably put a case on though.
I left apple for samsung last year because I needed a new phone and $400 for an s4 mini seemed like a much better value proposition than any apple stuff.

    I miss ios though.
