Just a quick note, if you are planning to get one of these and load it up with ubuntu or some other linux distro, don't get this one as it uses an ARM CPU, which for one is quite slow and secondly doesn't have the complete support a x86 CPU has.

You can still run different distros of linux on it, but they are quite slow and only a handful of packages have been ported.

  • How does chromebook compare to nexus 7 or Surface RT? Anyone have some experience on this OS?

    • +1

ChromeOS is nothing like a tradition windows or android OS.
It's entirely based around the chrome browser and google services.

    • Chrome OS is much better than Surface RT

Chromebooks are good for browsing the web, and using google services such as docs, drive etc etc. But they aren't as powerful as a standard laptop.

Depends exactly what you want to do, for browsing and checking/replying to email and basic day to day stuff they are top. Great battery life, quick startup and simple with a keyboard. But don't expect to play games etc.

I had a Nexus 7 but sold it. Still got my chromebook though. Don't know about RT though.

      • I had nexus 7 too and I sold it too :D. I am using surface RT 1st edition. Buts its getting old now. I use my Surface RT for my Studies and for watching online and offline videos. And I play games when I am travelling or waiting.

I know Chromebook got great web browser. It cannot play games but I can live with that.(I got mobile too :D)

So how is the video codec support on Chromebook? Can I open my PDF notes offline? And how is the cloud service. On my surface if I copy paste my files in onedrive, they are uploaded automatically when I connect to the internet. Its just like on Windows 8.1 full edition.

This model have bad battery life. I can get about 1 day of battery with lot of use. What you use and how is the battery?

        • You can play games on the Chromebook as well. Yeah PDF's and videos all work in offline mode aswell. There is a list of codec online that tells you what you can play. The cloud storage is heaps good and if you buy one during december you get 1TB free for 2 years. Battery on my CB is 9 hours. Have been using mine for 8 months now and it only slows down when i have more than 30 tabs open and am downloading a lot. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.

  • I love the chromebook, cheap, fast & efficient. Battery life is great on them too.

  • Was quite tempted by this little chromebook as a cheap secondary computer before finding out that HP makes a Windows 8.1 version of the same rig - albeit with a jarring blue paint job + celeron + bigger 8hr battery.. It's $288 at Harvey Norman and cos it doesn't cost a great deal more, I ended up choosing it.

Recommend anyone to check it out before getting this cos the 8hr battery + less cloud-centric Windows 8.1 might be a good alternative.
