It's a superior disk to the 840 and 840 pro but god damn that price premium.

If I was to buy an SSD now, I'd buy a cheap 840 Evo and use it for 3 years, at the end of the 3 years, every motherboard will have an M.2 (NGFF) socket and stacked v-flash or whatever it is. The price and speed ratios will be out of this world.
Don't buy premium stuff right on the edge of a tech jump

    • but you need to buy a new motherboard and cpu as well..

Definitely, that's why I said you buy the 840 Evo now, wait the 3 years for the big tech leap.
Why buy a high end premium 850 Pro when in 3 years it'll be hamstrung by the SATA port on it? SATA is going bye bye for SSD's in the coming years. (Well at least for the boot disk) - I'd rather throw away a $120 Samsung 840 evo than a $2 or $300 850 pro.

        • To put into server =)

        • but the issue would still be the same..

cos we won't have a new motherboard to connect that new future ssd port to it..

so it won't make much difference for us..

unless we buy a pc every 3 years with the new ssd

but the odds are ppl unlikely to upgrade their pcs every 3 years…

        • @tyler.durden: Well nowadays maybe the pace is lower than it used to be - but I'm sure in 3 years a lot of people will at least consider it.

        • @hamwhisperer:

yes but only for new system builders…

For many of us still using our old sata port pcs, it won't make much difference whether there a newer sata port etc..

Also I think they would make it backwards compatible,
so you can still buy the ssd, connect it to sata 3, but not able get the speed of sata 4 etc..

else they would cut of a large market of pc users…

they tend to make it backwards compatible
          like usb 1, usb 2, usb 3…

  • that 840 evo 512 is a great price. i would agree with above. no point getting the 850 yet. my laptop has raid 0 m.2(x4) and im stealing one spot to make some more storage space with the 840 evo

  • Are you guys suggesting buying the 840 Evo PRO listed in the deal, or a plain 840?
