  • downloaded this not long ago free, seems it is now free forever

    • +1

According to source, they mention it will be free for two weeks or so. Keep in mind this is the pro version

      • +4

I must be blind, but that link says its now free forever, where does it mention two weeks?

        • My bad I read it again and realise you are right.

      • +5

On the Play store, once an app goes free its always free (Those are Google rules), unless its done with one of those dodgy unlock codes within the app.

  • +4

Google maps also allows offline cache-ing, you just have to type " ok maps " and it will let you save an area of the map.

But this app seems to allow offline routing (unlike google maps) which is cool.

    • +4

caching is not very good. it just captures what's on screen and does not let you have big areas in screen.

      • I think you are mixing up caching and screenshot.
Google maps can "cache" 50MB of maps. You can zoom in or out in that area as much as you want.

        • +5

Nope, last I tried and if you zoom out a lot (like want to capture more than half of melbourne) - it gives error that you need to zoom in.

        • @superm86:

Yeah you can only cache about 1/2 of melbourne. But you can make multiple overlapping caches anyway. So you can just do Melbouurne Pt 1 and Pt 2 and get all of it :)

        • @blackfalcon53: Yup - that's what make it bad.. how hard is it for google to let you save entire Melbourne?

        • @superm86:

Melbourne is one of the most geographically spread out cities in the world. When Google decided on the 'optimal' area for caching they probably chose the size that would cover > 90% of cities. Unfortunately, this was not nearly big enough to cache Melbourne.

@elektron: But the fact that other map apps are making whole countries and even continents downloadable in one go, Google can do it too!

    • Also not available in some countries like Japan (where I am).

Much easier to use an off line map app. I add today's spots to see on the map & let the app direct me as I walk or catch transport. I have this app but use a free copy of Osmand+ for navigation. (Map of Japan is about 700MB with Osmand+.)

  • I tried offline routing the other day and it would pause every 5 second like playing a racing game online with a terrible net connection. Navigation was also not very clear at all. Just a highlighted route with no instructions on when and where to turn.

Am I missing something with this app?

    • They have just introduced routing in it - they plan to put proper navigation soon.
you can try 'navigator free' as well, see which one you like.

      • +1

I use the Nokia HERE map for offline navigation, works quite well.

        • +1

yeah - I also downloaded that recently. Apart from huge map size - it seems to work well offline!

    • lol augmented reality. You're getting real life lag

    • I use Osmand+ (paid version from free deal) for navigation in Japan. It has been better than this app so far. I keep this app as backup.

  • And compare with Nokia here map? we can switch to offline too

    • +1

HERE Maps is much better, especially for navigation (Drive). Offline maps/navigation on Android is generally disappointing. Probably due to the existence of Google Maps, which sucks at offline but otherwise works well enough that it discourages third parties.

    • How can you get here maps on a Galaxy?

Edit. Never mind, found it. Thanks below

  • +3

These Apps NEED to be free now that Nokia's HERE maps are available - for online and offline use. Furthermore, HERE offers Navigation that Maps.Me does not have and the maps are properly sourced since they own NAVTEQ (that sources maps for a whole bunch of other apps) as opposed to the open source Maps.me where streets and names are missing from most places such as Sydney Western Suburbs.

    get it HERE (pun intended)

    • cool didn't know about HERE gonna d/l and give it a try
edit: err why does it need permission to send sms? If it wasn't by nokia I'd be VERY suss

    • +1

WOW AU maps for HERE are over 700 MB!

      • +1

Pretty big huh? But that includes the directory of stuff within AU. Given Garmin's maps of AU are around 400MB these days, then its about right.

      • yeah it's massive I had to delete navfree to install it. Looks pretty good though. Might be worthy of a post on it's own

  • Can't beat the price, but the reviews are very mixed. Some are very positive, but quite a few recent ones aren't

  • Wicked. Thanks.

  • how about the best one for travelling with foot (ie for holiday overseas in China).
    offline of course.
and no need voice guidance :)

    • Voice guidance is very helpful on foot. Playing music as I walk the streets of Tokyo etc with Osmand+, with "turn left in 50m" keeping me on track. Just find free WiFi & download maps (700MB or so per country) before leaving on travels!

  • +1

Picked this up last year when I was travelling, its great! Saved my butt on several occasions, especially in Venice lol.

  • Downloaded. Thanks.

    Is there any difference? :S

    • one's for sheep!? ;-)

      • Must be too early for me to get it :)

        • +1

That one is for Apple iOS "sheep" and this one is for Android.

  • Used this for 9 months when travelling through the Americas and have to say it was an absolute lifesaver if you need a map but have no internet. The map was mostly accurate, including walking trails through most national parks and tourist attractions (saves on having to pay for a guide!). The app had maps for nearly everywhere I went except for tiny towns in South America and the Galapagos Islands. Can't vouch for the routing though as that's only a recent addition, but from what I can see it's nowhere near as good as Google Maps as it doesn't actively update if you go off route or provided an estimated time to destination, only approximate distance, though this feature is apparently still a work in progress.

    • I'm a little tired of hearing "recalculating route" when I wander off my course with Osmand+. But it is quite quick to offer an updated course. I just turn the sound off when I go exploring side streets on foot.

  • Can this app record your trips?

  • How does this compare to city maps 2 go?

  • I couldn't help but notice the link goes to Maps.Me, when i downloaded it, it keeps popping up saying that Maps.Me Pro is free today.

Do I have to unlock the Pro or are they the same thing?

    -EDIT-

NVM, just changed to Maps.Me Pro in my app drawer all of a sudden

    • Hmm.. but the pop up keeps coming, even when you've cleared all of your notifications!

      • Yes, the pop up keeps coming, it is very annoying.

  • Is this app good for Aus and New Zealand offline maps?

    • +1

If you have the storage space then Nokia HERE maps is better.

  • +2

been using here maps for a few weeks and all i can say is finally.
i have been searching for a decent off line nav and here is perfect, always spot on, yeh a little big but when you go offline it really means offline, it has everything to nav you around australia all on your device.

its free as a beta but not in the store but yeh all good. and doesnt chew through battery life too, i can charge the device while using it and not be affected.

oh if oyu have a samsung galaxy device you may be directed to the samsung app store to download it, i have a note 2 and this is how i went with it on the note but on my tab 8 i had to go through the site and download it.

  • How do i get HERE maps, cant find it in the play store? need to download .apk from somewhere?
edit: for android, obv. LG G3 if that matters.
