this deal almost made my day, until i see it's not a modem router.

      I agree!

    Same here :-(

Whoops I was the same - the modem router is the D7 not the C7 posted here!

  • +1

The reviews aren't great. 3/5 on Newegg. It is a budget product though.

It's really hard to know with wireless router reviews though. The ones from people who seem to have some technical knowledge look reasonably favourable. It's impossible to say what people are doing - eg. are they using the same wireless channel as all of their neighbours? Also, not all of the reviews are for version 2.0, which I believe has the same wireless chipset as the D7 which has more favourable reviews.

  • Really worth getting the D7

    • I find that modem routers are never worth getting.

Internet tech changes at such a slow pace where as routers change every year. Get a good stable modem then get a good router if you want better later just switch the router and leave the modem.

No point paying for a modem every time you upgrade network tech.

      • Yep, I'm the same, however It is nice to have one package instead of 2

  • Does this run Tomato firmware or DD-WRT?
I need something I can block DNS queries to 8.8.8.8 from specific IP addresses for Netflix

    • You don't need either to do that. You just set a static route. Most routers can do that.
In Archer routers, you can just block it by adding a firewall rule.

      • +1

Yeah I know you can set a static route for all traffic, but can I also do it selectively?
Eg. static route only for traffic from Roku and Chromecast only?
Is that what the firewall rule can do?

        • +2

Yes, you can. You just set the LAN Host as the IP address of your device.

I have the D7 and have 4 rules blocking the Google and Open DNS servers.

        • @neil: That's awesome, thanks for the info!

      http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wdr7500

only openwrt support depending on the version you get and it looks like at a very early stage of development. if you want lots of 3rd party firmware support than best buy a asus router.

      • For the version 2.0, which surely this is as they've been making that version for a year now, it says "All working from r41757".

  • Just bought, hopefully the stock firmware does everything I need

  • Is it a modem router?

  • I have a modem router. Can this router (TP-LINK Archer C7 AC1750) work together with modem router? Or do I have to buy a modem as well? Thanks.

  • I have bought the modem router C5 a few weeks ago form Centrecom (to replace a cheap WD router). I only use it as a router. I have 100 mbps cable internet with Telstra BigPond, running through the Netgear modem-router CG3100D-2BPAUS.

I am disappointed to see that there is not much difference between the cheap router and this C5 thing. The 5 Ghz band got me maximum of over 50mbps, and so does the wired connection. In my ignorance, I thought that I could get lightning fast internet speed, well, at least the 100mbps or so …
