  • price, boy!

Damn that is cheap. To bad I already have the best Samsung 64inch Plasma. Other wise I would jump on this

    • Same. Anyone want to buy?

  • +1

good price and I've seen this screen and it looks amazing. Definitely a lot more elsewhere.

The Portable Sony Hard Drive has been pre-loaded with 10 x 4K Ultra HD Movies (Privilege Movies account must be created before 28th of February 2016, the 5x 4K Ultra HD Movies must be chosen and unlocked before 30th of September 2015, redemption entitles you to unlimited playback up until 30th September 2016

I'm assuming after the 30th Sept 2015, you won't be able to playback those movies?
Guess you can use that hard drive for other things later.

    • So what do you mean by 10 films preloaded? All the documentation I can see is that you order the hdd, and it comes empty, and you choose 5 films to download?

I can't find the input lag on this TV.

    • +1

      re: the price: itshappening.gif!

re: input lag: It's a pain in the neck, isn't it? Anyway, if it is the 8505B in the UK (850B in the US?), then it rates quite well for input lag (I've read 36-41ms). There is a thread at avforums discussing discussing the 8505, with lots of people reporting not noticing the input lag while playing PS3 and PC games on it, for what little that is worth.

Truly though, these TVs need to be setup with games on them in store, and the many tech reviewers out there really need to pull their fingers out. Sentences like 'blacks as good as Kuro' or 'not as good as the companies flagship model' are both pretty much meaningless and worthless in 2015, whereas discussing the tech behind IPS panels, the scaling software in use, edge-lit LED or local dimming, and of course, input lag Leo Bodnar gear, would go a long way towards fixing it. Ah well :)

  • How much did you get the 65 inch for? Was looking to get that today but now thinking 70. Cheapest I've seen the 65 is $2500 video pro an d bing lee online.

  • is this price only today?

  • +2

I just cancelled my order for 65inch from BingLee :) Now gonna go for this one!!

    • +2

Great! Now the 79" will go sub $3000 tomorrow ;)

      • +3

        Please no……

        • ok day after tomorrow then!

        • +2

Poor fellow will be cancelling and reordering until new years

        • @skinny: lol #trolling

  • If you are like many people who watch 95% freeview you won't be sorry that you didn't buy to 70 inch. Unfortunately UHD cannot improve crappy input. 55inch is about the max that 1080i (freeview) will look ok. My local Harvey Norman has a policy at the moment of running freeview on the TV displays so that there are no rude shocks for the buyer. And whilst the UHD content looks spectacular, the freeview content looks even worse on the big TVs. It is really a case of needing different TVs for different jobs. I'm hoping that when I go for big UHD tv that I will have a smaller tv in front on a motorised lift (built into the entertainment unit) so that we can enjoy watching regular freeview.

    • That's just not true, I have a 64 inch Samsung plasma, I sit about 2.5 metres back; SD freeview looks fine and HD freeview looks amazing.

      • We are not talking about about plasma, this thread is about UHD LCD/LED TVs. I do agree that Plasma is the best for freeview however Panasonic and Samsung have ceased production of plasma this year. When I was at HN last weekend they only had one plasma model left and said that they would no longer be stocking them. My biggest regret was purchasing a 55inch LCD 3D TV to replace my 50inch Plasma - I was devastated by the drop in quality of the freeview picture. Mind you, 3D FHD movies look fantastic, but we don't watch too many of them any more.

      • The best Samsung & Panasonic (especially) Plasmas still give these 4k LEDs a hiding where it matters. I still feel for all those people who got sucked in when 4k prices were extortionate.

        • They kept pumping out specs that we hardly need/could make use of instead of focusing on things like true deep blacks, extra micro super mega local dimming lol (#trolling)

        • Its true. At a normal viewing distance the average person is more likely to notice and prefer accurate colour, deep blacks and a wide viewing angle then simply more pixels. Pixels and resolution are overrated. Look at a 20MP camera phone photo vs 10mp dSLR photo…

Besides, the UHD standard hasn't even settled on a colour space yet! These TVs are a stop gap measure until that arrives!

Having setup and played with one of these in a home, I couldn't stand the lag of the remote/menu system…

    • +2

While its true that SD wont look heaps better on a 4K TV, and will look worse the bigger the screen, it will generally look sharper on a 4K TV than the same content, on the same size 1080p TV.
The TV scaler will upscale to the native 4K resolution, using those extra pixels to smooth out the jaggies a little bit.

Besides, anyone looking to buy a 4K TV today is planning on replacing it in the near future.. in 2 or 3 years time broadcast TV res will probably still suck.. but 4K downloads and blurays and whatever comes next will mean more and more 4K content to watch.

  • +7

why is it in australia we have such crappy tv quality compared to the like of the rest of the world.

For christ sake even the AFL is still in SD when broadcasted on channel 7.

    • +3

Yep, it's embarrassing. The cricket is in a paltry SD resolution, except for that wonderful half hour when the tests run long and you get to watch them on GEM. The v8's HD is locked away on Foxtel, in a rubbish piece of content management by the sport and the telecasters.

      Truly awful by all involved.

    • +1

For all it's worth if any of you are into "soccer" you'll gladly realize a lot of sbs coverage is in HD… even some abc (matildas/socceroos/w league) has had a handful of HD games…plus the 7mate all stars game :)

    • +1

I read a really great article about this a few months back somewhere, forgive me if I butcher some of the details - the short version was essentially that the Howard Government was really gunho about early adoption of DTV, and so all the major stations here set up shop with MPEG2 broadcasts before any other major markets had even moved to DTV.

Then during the analogue shutoff last (?) year, the Labor government at the time handed out set top boxes that couldn't do H.264, only MPEG2.

So essentially while a lot of the market might have DTV receivers that can handle a H.264 broadcast, many would be cut off if our stations switched from MPEG2.

      • That's pretty interesting, and entirely believable! If you happen across the article, please pass it along!

/found a research PDF from Swinburne (entitled 'Would the real Freeview please stand up?') that goes into a bit of detail about the takeup of MPEG and h264 standards across varous territories (UK/NZ.Aus) that corroborates your recollection.

  • +8

The only high quality contents on freeview are commercials. They always look stunning

    • troll but true :)

  • I just bought one of these today, delivery on Sunday. Having been on the look out for a 70 inch TV for a while, this is surely the best value boxing day sale price anywhere. It came down to this TV or the 75inch Samsung HD for $3300. The image quality on this TV is pretty good, and the free 4K movies was icing on the cake.

    • Have just went through the same process, was looking at this and the Samsung 75" 6400. I managed to get the guy to throw in free delivery for tomorrow. And you're right, the free 4k movies and free hard drive is icing on the cake.

      • Do you know it's 3d passive or active?

        • 3d active

      • Dammit, wish I could have got free delivery for tomorrow, i payed $60, and the earliest they could do was Sunday. Where did you get it from?

I must say though, I couldn't really tell much difference in picture quality between this and the Samsung, despite this being 4k and running 4k material and the samsung being only HD. The fact that this was cheaper was the thing that sealed the deal, not the resolution.

        • Osborne Park WA. Had to ask two different guys though.

  • +1

Now i am annoyed by being 5 inches smaller than you guys!

    • I thought you'd be used to it.

    • It's what you do with it that counts mate.

      • +3

That's what blokes who drive Barinas say.

        • well, if they get her to the destination, before dropping their load, then i'd say that counts!

  • +1

Asked the sales guy about this and he said that you cannot turn upscaling on and not have motion plus running.

If this is true, that is a major bummer.

There isn't a better deal than this TV at this size though. It most definitely the best 4K deal for 60+ inch tvs

  • Bought one, thanks OP!

  • Anyone knows whether this set suffers from the common radial banding the non 4k 70' set seems to suffer from? Also the 3D feature seems to be as poor as the one in the non 4K version for those who care about this sort of stuff.

    • Its a different screen, it doesn't appear to have the radial banding from reading the forums. Also I haven't come across any 3D issues.

  • Anyone knows how long it can wait in the Harvey Norman store if I choose pick up in store? I am in the process of move and like to pick it up like in three weeks. Are they going to hold it for me that long?

    • Unless you have a truck, you have zero chance of of getting this TV into a car or an SUV. As an example it wont fit into a car the size of a Jeep Grand Cherokee. So it might just fit in a Land Cruiser or a Range Rover, but perhaps not.

      • It fit into our Prado with us folding the back chairs and lying it sideways and up the chair. But yeah it was a tight fit.

  • God forbid someone finds this $100 cheaper and TRIES to price match at a HN store.

The worst customer service available can be found in most VIC HN stores and on just about every phone call to any other. Particularly evident when you want to price match. I believe there's an OzBargain thread on this very topic. Also, 10 inches less and no 3D (I believe) for a Sony TV - save $2000 off this special price and go with the deal listed below this one! ;)

    • +1

      It's also not 4K

    • +2

10" is quite a big difference screen wise. Not mention this is at least 2 classes up from that 60" TV, this panel alone will walk all that in colour accuracy.

  • Can confirm that JB were able to price match this deal for me though it took a solid 10m and they were wildly surprised by how cheap it was; cancelled my FHD Sammy 65' purchase from earlier this morning which was an amazing deal in and of itself for this beast - thanks OP.

    • I didn't have any luck with my local JB for price matching… how much do they charge for delivery at JB anyway?

      • Charged me $65 which is more than HN (at least to my address) but I got further discounts on some other goodies I purchased along with it so it worked out. They did say that I might need to wait UP TO a month (and more probably 2 weeks) for the delivery to come in though.

        • Thats not too bad. My local HN was trying to charge me $60 for delivery when their HN website only charge $49…

  • I feel like the bargain gods are trolling me at the moment, nobody seems to be doing the 55" version of this TV for any super cheap prices this boxing day :-/

  • I wasn't even looking to buy a TV, but look who has a 70 inch 4K tv now… I HAVE NO WILL POWER.

    • OZBARGAIN is making me bankrupted.

  • +7

    Ok, I just bought one….

In case my wife kills me for this, please know I loved OZBARGAIN!

  • I bought this today at the Melbourne QV Harvey Norman, delivery for tomorrow. YMMV, but I got delivery for free. They offered installed for $200 (wall mounting) but as I have an existing wall mounted TV, I passed as the hard part (hanging the frame on the wall) is already done.

    Great deal!

  • save $3 at The Good Guys :) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/176611

  • I will be in the market for a TV like this in late Jan/Feb as i will be moving house, should i wait til then in the hope that it may be cheaper or at least a similar price? Or should i pull the trigger now bc this price is too good to be true and keep it in the massive box? Will i be able to get cheaper deals when the 2015 models come out in a couple of months? Any tips would be appreciated by fellow ozbargainers.

    • I am in the same boat with you, I am moving in late January, but I bought it anyway. 70 inches and 4K content hard drive, was really hard to resist.

    • I'd love to know the motivation of the person who downvoted you.

Nobody can really know, but generally, these types of deals are repeated (though it may be slightly more, given how popular it probably is).

In television purchasing, being without it now withstanding, it never does not pay to wait.

      It's just not fun waiting.

    • CES is next week. We should see all the new models next week; so you have to figure these models will be clearing out soon. if you want this model of Sony, I can't imagine it will get that much cheaper, even on clearance. This is darn cheap.

    • HN have more stock from what they tell me, and they threw in delivery. In store price was $2,996 for me as well. I'd say stock levels are far more important than $3?

      • TGG threw in free delivery and additional 2 year extended warranty.

        • Can you please attach a receipt?

        • +1

          @ Logical

Thanks for the tip mate, I haggled with HN mentioning TGG's two year extended warranty offer. To beat them, HN threw in two years REPLACEMENT warranty with free delivery tomorrow! HA HA

I can't believe I am saying this, but I love you Harvey!

        • +1

@Meteorite: Can you please attach a receipt?

        • I would buy the same deal without hesitation

        • @Meteorite:

Do you have a receipt? I have to wait until the 10th for delivery but would like what you got also.

        • @begbie: I guess some people are not interested in helping others out by posting a copy of the receipt for price matching purposes.

        • +1

          @begbie:

Maybe he never even has the set?

    • +2

Don't forget to get the bonus $100 voucher for $500+ spend at TGG

  • /edit - was supposed to be in response, not hanging out here like a shag on a rock

  • So HN delivered mine today, and the box was all smashed in. Delivery guy told me to reject it and they would deliver another one tomorrow, 30 mins later I got a call from the store I bought it from and it turns out that there is no more stock left, so they are sending the broken box one back to try it out. Bloody hell. I wonder if their online store has any stock, no indicators on their website they don't.

  • OK so i went and bought one, thanks OZB.

  • I bit the bullet and got x 2 of these tvs yesterday, 1 for
Living room and 1 for lounge room, will be ready in a few weeks but not fussed as i wont need them for another month

    • you have TVs in both your living room and lounge room (if you differentiate between the two terms)? wouldn't that make it a second living room, rather than a lounge?

  • I purchased one today from Appliances Online. Price Matched TGG's with no trouble, but made comment on how great this price was.

    Delivery on Wednesday.

  • Sorry I just copied this from the good guys bargain and was seeking assistance-

I'm still finding it hard to make a decision on either the UA65HU8500 vs KD70X8500B - gone into store to check them both out in detail. Prefer the Samsungs smart tv over the Sonys. Picture quality seemed comparable, price fairly comparable. 2995 vs 3200. Obviously 5 inch smaller but at those sizes it doesn't look like much difference, aesthetically I prefer the Samsung! Anyone have any suggestions or am I missing any glaring differences?

    • There is a big difference between a 65 inch and 70 inch screen.

  • Personally I would go with the Sony as the customer service you get with Samsung is appaling.

  • -2

    Warning to people:

If youv'e read up on the 70 inch one for 2K at JB, there was a lot of talk about this problem with them, also.

I have just seen this TV (the TV in the deal) installed in someone's home and I can assure you, at the very least there are backlight problems with at least one of these units.

The blotchiness of the tv I have just seen is terrible. When you are in the menu, I actually thought the solid grey colour had a blurry white pattern to it.

    • Have you seen problems with the non 4k one for $2000 or problems with the 4k one for $3000 or problems with both?

      • oh, sorry, i misread! my bad, please ignore.

      • I have only seen the problems with the non 4k on a forum. (Banding)

I have just witnessed the problem on the 4k for myself. (Big blotches)

  • Wow you would be one of the first to say this as all the reviews I have read state that the banding on the 4k model is not there.

  • Anyone get their 4k drive yet?

  • Im still waiting on my tv as harvey norman has it on backorder as they sold out australia wide, hopefully next week then can claim the 4k bonus
