But he is an old coot.

    So tempting….Must….Resist….

I get that they're competing with HN here, but come on guys, the 65" version is now $90 MORE EXPENSIVE - step up your game and lower the price on the 65" :-)

    http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/sony-65-inches164cm-uhd-led-lc… ($3085)

  • HN will ship earlier, by the looks of it

  • I'll just reiterate, the information I have is that if you have upscaling on, you must have motion crap on as well.

    • I have the 70 inch previous model and it allows to turn off motion control separately to upscale

    • Upscaling in what way? If you turn off the motion crap, a 1080p signal will only fill a quarter of the screen?

      • If you turn off the motion crap only, the television no longer interpolates frames - ie, no 100hz (or whatever) unless the source truly has it. Nothing to do with the display size / resolution.

If you turn the upscaling off, the television will run in 1080p and display that on the full tv

If you turn it on, the television will upscale (graphical interpretation) the 1080p signal to 4k

What some people don't like (me included) is the fact that the motion crap cannot keep a truly stable perceived 100hz. If you don't notice it, DO NOT investigate further!, it will not make your experience better :-)

        • If you turn the upscaling off, the television will run in 1080p and display that on the full tv

If you turn it on, the television will upscale (graphical interpretation) the 1080p signal to 4k

OK, I haven't played much with 4K TVs, but to display a lower-res signal on a higher-res panel, the lower-res signal has to be upscaled. The missing data will be interpolated.

Without upscaling the panel will have to do 1:1 pixel mapping, which means only 1/4 of the 4K screen will be filled the 1080p image.

So in both situations, upscaling is occurring. With motion crap on, is it also doing some other fancy processing as well? Extra sharpening, etc?

        • +1

          @eug:

Yes, the fancy sharpening is the "upscaling" of television world. Displaying a non native res without processing generally looks pretty crummy.

        • @LordRichington: OK, that doesn't sound good then.

On a related note, are Oppo upscaling bluray players worth the large price? Some people say the scalers in Samsung 4K TVs are fine, while others say the Oppos look better (to some people) because the algorithm they use results in oversharpened images.

    wow…

I might wait a year and pick one up for $1500 next Xmas…

    • Jesus people are sensitive about prices. The idea of someone waiting and paying less is absolute hell to some people on here :-)

    • Nah that's loser talk. Wait till 2016 Christmas and get it for $750. Imagine the $750 in savings you're missing out on!

      • how long before its free?

        • +4

A decade maybe? You can hardly even give away a CRT TV now. :)

      • Opportunity cost?!

  • +1

FYI, if you don't think you need/want 4K, then the W850 for $1000 cheaper may be of interest:

I got Harvey Norman to throw in delivery for tomorrow, their marked price was $2,996. They have a lot of stock too.

    • WTF!! I was in hardly normal today in hoppers crossing and the eta eta around the 10th of January!

      • Must have gone fast, I was there at around 9am on Boxing Day

  • If u.could get blurays that did 4k sure worth getting. But id rather wait a year till they come out and then buy it for $1900 and 80" :)

    • If you were able buy a SONY 80" HD TV for 1900 one year after they were offered to the market i.e. 2010, then you will be able to buy the SONY 80" 4K for 1900 in one year.

Besides, Netflix is coming to Australia soon, and you will able to watch 4K content on Netflix.

ahhh nice, streaming 100gb 4k movie over my 4mbit adsl,, will take about 3 days to download. nice

        • but but we have National Bullsh1t Network !

        • @medium_tight:

perhaps in 2020,.. by then id say we would also have UHD 8k tv's with 60fps and 3D u can expect hologram discs to take about 2-3TB of data.

        • +2

          @medium_tight:

Copper is the way of the future.. Just ask the inventor of the Internet in this country, Malcolm Turnbull.

    • Good luck with that. Dollar is going down not up, and this tv is already priced lower than in the US. Once stock in Australia is depleted that was bought at the higher dollar, tv prices are going to go up, not down. You won't be seeing prices like this again for a long time.

      • they're not made in the USA, they're made in asia, i'm sure there's some correlation to the USD but there's a greater one to asian economies.

think HDD prices after thailand floods…

        • -1

There is a correlation to the australian dollar sliding against other currencies.

Don't forget to get the bonus $100 voucher for $500+ spend at TGG

  • ops wrong TV

  • Really tough decision. Would love to replace my old 50inch Samsung Plasma (7 years old) … but it's still going strong. 4K content is still rare and expensive or difficult to get (I doubt I can stream 4K on my internet connection).

I agree with thorton82 that this will be a great price for a long time due to the weak AUD. So maybe I should buy one … ahhh … still 3000 on the homeloan make just more sense.

  • What is good guys stock like? Im thinking of cancelling my HN order and buying at TGG

    • Ring and ask, I just read what happened with the delivery of HN smashed box and that they decided to send it out of the warehouse in that state is worrying. Good luck mate.

  • I'm still finding it hard to make a decision on either the UA65HU8500 vs KD70X8500B - gone into store to check them both out in detail. Prefer the Samsungs smart tv over the Sonys. Picture quality seemed comparable, price fairly comparable. 2995 vs 3200. Obviously 5 inch smaller but at those sizes it doesn't look like much difference, aesthetically I prefer the Samsung! Anyone have any suggestions or am I missing any glaring differences?

    Cheers!

    Warning to people:

If youv'e read up on the 70 inch one for 2K at JB, there was a lot of talk about this problem with them, also.

I have just seen this TV (the TV in the deal) installed in someone's home and I can assure you, at the very least there are backlight problems with at least one of these units.

The blotchiness of the tv I have just seen is terrible. When you are in the menu, I actually thought the solid grey colour had a blurry white pattern to it.

  • Anyone get their 4k Movie Hard Drive yet?
