This TV is already included in my post for JB's End of Year Madness sale here, but your post is a lot more detailed.

    wow… i still remember paying over $3K for an 80cm CRT TV…

    • +4

heh i spent 5k on a 86cm Sony CRT in 2003. First of the HD CRTs.

      • +5

look on the bright side, nobody is ever going to steal it.

heck, it takes about 4 people to move it….

        • +1

          or a forklift

        • -1

Mine is at the bottom of the ocean - I tied 2 together by their VGA cable and a big brick on a fishing trip. Nemo now enjoys it. One day they will be looking for some lost city and they will find lost Sony CRT's

        • +1

Not 4. I had a mover once carry my 100kg 86cm set on his own and lift it up into the van. No idea how he did it.

Maybe he was superman is disguise (on his day job)

@btdroppedbox: Yeah thats called being an asshole and polluting.

          @btdroppedbox: aren't they like, toxic?

      • +1

CRT's came in HD??…. Wow, glad I missed that 2 seconds in time….

        • I missed that 2 seconds in time….

          not far off it…

about the same length of time as laser discs…

        • +3

Ignoring the size, still better picture quality that what's being sold now. ;)

        • @SBOB:

can also be thankful we no longer have a carbon tax…

        • +1

It's true, HD CRTs did exist. We also had these things called plasma TVs back in the olden days. Of course, I don't expect you to remember them seeing as you sound about 12.

      • +1

I paid $5600 in June 2002. Plus $700 for the HD box, of course. :( Still have both.

  • +1

Bought the same TV for $2,700 back in August. Suffice to say I feel pig sick now.

    • +3

at least it's not a CRT.

    • +1

it was always going to get cheaper JamezAus.

I just hope you turned it on since August and enjoyed it before those who are considering getting it now.
I just don't think about those things once I bought it because you know, I'm enjoying my purchase

    • Bought the same TV for $2,700 back in August. Suffice to say I feel pig sick now.

Yer that sucks.. still.. you have had 4-5 months extra enjoyment out of it… thats worth something.

This is why I put ALL my electronics purchases on a credit card with 2 years price protection.

Electronics almost always drop in price - now I can buy what I want, when I want it, but end up paying the later lower price.

As long as its from the same retailer (can be different branch or their website), and the price drop is over $10. You can claim a price drop up to $600 per item, and claim back up to $2,000 per year.

(see section 8.1 on page 11)
      http://www.colescreditcards.com.au/~/media/files/creditcards…

28 Degrees also offer price protection, I think for 6 months.

      • Wow two years. I use 28 degrees, I think it's great.

  • I paid $2500 for this a 2 months back at JB, I'm in the process of contacting Sony about the substandard 3d on it and the radial banding (discussed at length on the W850b model here.)
Don't buy this model if 3d is important to you, the picture is good otherwise.

If it was a plasma it'd be a great deal.

    • +1

      why?

i find plasma is terrible in bright rooms.

      • -1

I find LCD terrible in dark rooms.

      • +1

Plasma was and is superior in terms of picture quality and black levels.

    • I replaced my 65" Plasma with this and am regretting it.

  • This could be cheaper on Boxing Day, possibly down to $1500!

    • +1

This is the Boxing Day sales….

      • +1

I was talking about another retailer might have better deals on Boxing Day/tomorrow. Just shop around before jumping into any deals plus check TV in store first. Don't just take advice from unknown random member in this forum.

That's a really good price, but be warned with this TV. All the reviews you will find online point towards it being a good TV, but if you actually go look at it in operation, it is a very poor TV, with poor colour, definition and generally below par compared with its competition. In Costco they resort to keeping this TV off, and playing just on its size. It makes HD images look SD. It also has a major manufacturing problem with big rings appearing on blank screens. I'd still be tempted at that price, but its not as good as say the equivalent LG, despite what the online reviews will tell you.

    • +3

Yes mine suffers the "big circles" and am sending it back, just not that easy with a 70".

      • +3

Negged? Sorry if I offended you with my experience.
Hopefully it helps anyone else who simply see's a cheap large tv to look deeper and not go through the same hassle.

  • +1

i googled around and they say to avoid the 70"

"Unfortunately, we don't recommend the 70" one. We received a lot of feedback that the KDL70W850B is prone to a radial banding issue that affects the uniformity of the screen. It doesn't happen on every one of them, about maybe 1 out of 3 units. Unless you don't mind exchanging your TV if you are unlucky, get another one." - rtings.com

if only i could get one delivered without radial banding…..

    • As with most large LED TVs you should be prepared to go through a few to get a good one. Not always but it's pretty common. I went through three of my current model Samsungs before I got one which was good. Strangely enough at least the problem is consistent so you know what you're looking for.

  • Can you normally negotiate on sale items?

  • It's $1989 (pickup from nearest store) on TGG eBay store:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sony-KDL70W850B-70-176cm-FHD-LED-…
It seems like Sony Australia went into the price reduction on FHD TVs

Edit: Plus $50 store credit from TGG till 26/12/2014 8am

  • Harvey Norman high point is selling for $1950 today.

  • Bought one of these today at JB. I realise there's a good chance there'll be problems with banding, but at this price I'm willing to take the gamble of having to deal with exchanges!

It's $65 delivery from JB because it's a "large format" TV. Couldn't possibly pick it up myself though, so no choice…

  • i have this tv. It is great. i dont give a toss about 3D. 2K for 70" is great value.
    I dont see the banding.

    • Put a white screen on. My biggest problem with this tv isn't the banding, it's the poor image quality.

      • do I have to ? I dont watch white screens as they are too boring.

      • I can see a radial band if I try really really hard but it's not noticeable in the days cricket I have watched. I'll grab some test pictures but if it's ok for cricket I'm hoping the grass will look just as green for AFL. Uncalibrated I think the picture quality is good for the price.

  • I was going to buy this today but decided against it after reading the forums about the banding issues….seems like a lot of people are not happy with this TV.

    Probably why its so cheap.
