    I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus that is close to retiring

    How does the Moto G compare and is it a huge step up in specs etc

    Cheers

    • +1

      I'd stick with the Nexus. You'll miss that AMOLED display.

      • How about if you're considering buying the $200 Moto G or the $400 Nexus? ie is the Nexus worth the extra?

        • +7

          The Nexus 5 is a bit better. What is the competition for your $200 extra?
          Paid off your debts, including mortgage? All tired of coke & hookers?

          @manic:

          I would say the Nexus 5 is a lot better.

        • +1

          @stemcell:

          That would be a waste of breath without qualifying it.
          What important extra tasks can it do? In practice they do the same thing.

          How is battery life? That is one thing that matters a lot in the real world.
          A tiny bit of lag is unimportant compared to a phone that will not turn on.

          @manic:

          Every phone that has ever existed has faults, anyhow cpu in N5 far superior twice the ram and records in full hd not 720 like the moto and that's just off the top of my head.

          Now run along to your Nexus 5 vs Moto G 4G fanboy site plagiarise it and post back here as I fancy a laugh.

          LG G2 baby, it's like the Nexus 5 just with all around better hardware, I consider it the v2 version of the Nexus 5 (both phones made by LG after all).. Like bigger battery, OIS camera, smaller bezels etc. Same gutsy performance (snapdragon 800).

          @scrimshaw:

          I agree scrimshaw the G2 is a cracking phone with a better camera and a battery that lasts longer than the N5.

          @stemcell:
          Of course it is better. Both are considered good value, and the nexus is twice the price.

          But twice the specs on paper does not translate to twice the utility.
          No advantage from full-HD video if the lens and CCD are tiny.
          And how can we possibly tell a stranger if the Nexus is worth twice the cost for them?

    • Yeah me too - was going to go for this with the Chromecast bundle (offer from a few days ago), but then I did a factory reset and it is good as new again - I cannot believe what a big difference it made!

    • Moto G, LG G2 will have Android 5.0 while the Nexus 5 already it. So good choices between all 3.

      LG G2 is the better phone of the 3, but Moto G is the cheapest. I think the extra cost is worth it.

    • I've had both. Moto G smokes the Nexus in smoothness, battery life, screen quality (GNex screen is a low grade AMOLED with a 'mura' where the image is textured like canvas rather than sharp), build quality and ergonomics.

      I am currently using a Z1 Compact but honestly the Moto G was almost as good.

        Which nexus are you referring to?

        • Galaxy Nexus (see post that I was replying to).

  • +2

    its very good. camera and limited memory (xt1032) are only weaknesses. 4g would just make it better! only changing as found a deal on z1 compact.

    • +1

      4g model has micro sd card slot, as well as a gyroscope so you can use google cardboard and photosphere.

      • +4

        Think he's referring to the RAM. 1GB for Android devices isn't much. The Nexus 4 has 2GB and it can also be had for a similar price.

        • +2

          I totally agree with Leonheart1 as my Motorola XT885 has 1GB RAM and I have to say that it is really slow, even I am using Android 4.1.2

        • +1

          @cuongacc: yeah but that's an xt 885 aka RAZR v. That thing would be older than my gran, its not the ram holding it back.

  • Hopefully they have stock and this one does not turn out like the LG G3 saga.

    no was referring to the ROM not ram. runs OK with 1gb and a quad core a7. never going to break benchmarks but user experience was decent given price point. microsd alleviates 1 problem. camera average is only bit. battery life waaaay better than my n4 ever was. oh, and did get a g3 2gb in the D's sale. 429(my nearest jb is doing it at $447), beautiful BUT just to damn big for my hand hence a z1c, 1 handed operation! awesome.for giant handers tho and don't believe those that say you need the 3gb, 2 is fine!

  • 8 gigs, what does that normal leave a phone…. 5gbs spare? Im looking for another phone for the missus but I want something with some room, I take it not even apps/games can be moved over to the sd card??
    Got tricked with the Samsung she has now, stated it had 4gb rom when it only has 800mbs spare :/

    • +2

      8GB is probably not enough if you play games on the device, as some games may have large installation sizes.

      If you're just using ordinary apps, each individual app doesn't take that much space, unless you like collecting a massive 100+ app library on your device.

  • My wife and I went in to buy her this as an upgrade from an Incredible S. We decided not to, as the 4.5" screen includes the home/back/settings buttons, so effectively the screen is the same size as her current 4"screen. We decided to keep looking for a bigger screen, or hold out for a 2nd gen Moto G with 4G.

  • In my experience searching for a phone, Samsung are pretty much the only manufacturer with hardware buttons. The rest have all gone down the path with software keys. Which is a pity as it eats up at least 0.3" of screen space. There are tools to hide the software buttons, but I don't find the experience all that great

    • Its one of the things I miss too, its annoying having to tap the screen just to get the buttons up, so much easier tapping the bottom right corner.

      One Plus One gives you the option of either the Navbar or Capacitive touch buttons.

  • OfficeWorks have this model for $169, however it is mostly out of stock. Any chance of a price match?
    Will post link when site is up.

    • Thats not the 4G model, it is the old dual-sim 3g one, and certainly long gone from stock.

    • That model is missing 4G and microSD card slot.

  • Good price, but no equivalent sale on the 2nd gen Moto G?

  • This is a fantastic phone. Low ram is rarely a problem for me but 8gb allows very few apps to be installed. Pretty poor camera. Otherwise I'd pounce on it. Android 5.0 update coming soon.

  • Thanks OP, on my way to pick one up now. Drowned my last one, bought a Nexus 4 to replace it, but much prefer the Moto G due to smaller size, simplicity, and battery life.

  • Honestly great deal you could use this phone a long time
