We seem to be missing the price???
    $499 + p&h in title please!

    • +1

I had it written out but it seemed to go AWOL on posting. Not sure what happened there but it was fixed with 30seconds.

    • -2

We seem to be still missing the GOOD price.

      • +1

Go right ahead and post a better deal if you have one.

        • +1

I personally think it is a decent price and all but it is ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor, slightly misleading to just state it as i5 as ULV processors are weaker in terms of processing power compared to normal processors for laptops.

        • @AznMitch:
          Yes agree.

        • +1

          @King Tightarse: A decent deal nonetheless. :P

        • @King Tightarse: @AznMitch:

Needed a couple of basic laptops for the Mrs business. I'm a bit over Asus so I bought the Mrs colleague a Pro250 G3 a couple of months back with similar specs to this, and just bought the Mrs a Pro250 G2 with the older 3230M from Shopping Express over the break. Curious to see how much better the 3230M performs!

        • @AznMitch:
I didn't know it was possible to have full desktop-sized i5 inside a laptop? Wouldn't it run out of battery in like 5 minutes?

        • +1

@Kanasuke: There are many types of laptop i series CPUs. There are Ms i.e. i5-4200M, Us, i5-4200u, Ys, i5-4200Y. U and Ys has better battery life, but they have less processing power. There are HQs and MQs and more as well but I don't think it is necessary to explain them. Also, generations do affect with processing power and power consumption. Haswell architecture becoming more power efficient than Ivy Bridge etc etc.

I was simply referring to the fact that it had a ULV CPU instead of the normal laptop CPU, even though it is bulky for it to be considered as an ultrabook.

Saying that it is a i5 laptop without covering whether it is ULV CPU or not is marketing department being smart. I personally find it to be equivalent to those people who say quadcore CPU without saying anything about CPU. That's why I bought it up.

I am sure there are terms for it and there are people who can explain it better than I am but that's the gist of it.

        • @AznMitch:
thanks cleared it up for me

  • Price is…..?

    498 with discount incl delivery

If anybody is interested in the model name, it is HP 15-r001tu Notebook PC.

  • +1

decent laptop but id be putting an ssd in there as the current hdd will dog it up. screen and ram spec always gona be low for a sub 500$ laptop.

    • Yep with an SSD you would have a handy general purpose machine with this.

  • Decent price add a 480gb ssd and your set

  • Is that similar with Shopping Express , also HP i5

    http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/hp-250-g2-notebook-pc-…

    • Yes similar but Shopping Express is i5-3230M Vs i5-4210U at COTD they are very similar however.

      http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/153/Intel_Core_i5_Mobile_i5-3230M_(BGA)_vs_Intel_Core_i5_Mobile_i5-4210U.html

      • Thanks, but the data is a bit confusing for me. I guess the difference is minimal and can be ignored …

        • The COTD one is newer and more more power efficient the SE one goes a bit faster but is out of date. They are from different series but end up are very similar.

        • @King Tightarse:

Like I stated above: We already have a Pro250 G3 with the 4210U (exact same specs as this 15) and should have tomorrow from ShopEx the Pro250 G2 with the 3230M. It'll be interesting to see the differences, but the Gen 3 processor, although older, is a lot more powerful on testing.
If we're talking out of date, the 3230M was Jan 2013 and the 4210U is Apr 2014… and let's be honest, the 4210U will be out of date very very quickly again!

        • @Snoop:
Sure, I don't mean redundant by any means. I was making it as simple as possible for Aplpw to contrast the differences. I doubt there would be much noticeable difference browsing around. CPU boss calls it "too close to call" http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-4210U-vs-Intel-Core-i5…
One thing that might be noticeable however is battery life. The processors are quite different in power demands: "Significantly lower typical power consumption" 12.19W vs 28.44W (2.3x lower typical power consumption)
With the newer U series the clear winner there.

        • @King Tightarse:
          Yep, flip a coin!
Although I should've mentioned that the main reason we wanted the Pro250 was because it came installed with Win7 Pro (and a Win8.1 Pro license)!

    • Same same but different….I see the difference being:

      • one released in 2013 and the other 2014
      • Intel graphics cards 4000 and 4400

apart from that, both are similar. I can't justify paying $500 for it though… I'll just sit tight with my 2008 hp core 2 duo 2.8 with 4gb ram with upgraded 120gb ssd laptop and wait for lappies to drop in price further…

Well this summer is the last chance for a while. Its pretty much down to the stock thats here and how cheap it gets sold over summer because the AU$ has lost a lot of ground. New stuff being imported will be at a different US-AU rate.

        • Pretty happy with $500 compared to the the $2000 Dell I bought 10 years ago and the $1000 Acer from 5 years ago!

  • Pretty sure 2.23 kg is still on the heavy side for a 15.6 inch.
not that i expected ultrabook weights

    • +1

Reasonably standard weight. There are a couple around the 1.9 - 2.0kg mark, but there's still quite a few up around the 2.5kg!

  • At least its an i5 and not a celeron…. that and 4 gig of ram this isnt bad.

  • Any known overheat issue with this particular laptop/model?

Had one HP i7 ivy second gen laptop a few years back, overheated to that extend the computer shut down by itself!!

    • +1

After a few years when the fan was full of dust? Any lappy will do that if you get enough dust in it- using it on carpet, in bed etc.

  • +1

Good deal and not expired yet.

  • I just ordered one but then got an email straight away saying they need to "verify" my personal and payment information and will be in contact with me within 2 business days.

My order got flagged with their fraud protection or something. Sigh.

  • Now showing as Sold Out / Out Of Stock

    • Yeah I think I got the last one, as soon as I ordered I went back and refreshed the page and it was out of stock.

      • Thanks, you've probably saved me a few dollars, was tempted to buy this even though I don't need it!

        • You're welcome. It's not even for me, it's to take overseas for brother in law… so TRS will give me the GST back too…

          $499 + $14.59 postage - $10 discount - $45.78 GST = $457.81

          Not a bad bargain :)
