the Lite-on dvd burner is $18 not $14 like it says it is.

Shipping price is around 10$ (NSW) :(

  • Thinking about the monitor - anyone had any experience? I've been looking for a decent 24" 120hz monitor for a while now.. But I have 3x Dell P2414 and don't know if I want to replace one purely for gaming..

    • I assume you are talking about the ex demo 24GM77 advertised in the link?

I bought one ex demo from their Clayton store. The monitor was packaged in its original box with manual. The monitor itself still had protective wrapping on it and it essentially looked brand new. I asked and they guy said it comes with the same warranty as new.

      Your millage may vary.

Really happy with the 144Hz monitor and the strobe light does make a difference in reducing motion blur, although that can only be used in 120Hz mode.

It was a good $200 saving for me getting ex demo that looked virtually brand new rather than brand new and sealed.

      • I was tempted at $299. I've already got 3 monitors here though and my main one is 30", would be a bit tough going down to 24" :)

    • That monitor has been the same price for at least the last 4 weeks….so not a "deal of the day" as such. My friend has one and says that it's fantastic and will most likely be biting the bullet on it myself.

      • Oh and whilst the page says it's 120Hz, the price list says it's 144hz. I can confirm it's actually 120hz.

SSD of good enough quality for a C drive?

Also cant find online yet if it has software for cloning win 7 like my samsung ssd has

    • I used Partition Assistant Standard Edition to clone win 7 drive to ssd. It's free to download.

      • Thanks

        • Is it highly recommended to do a fresh install however?

        • +1

          @SevenSmurfs:
I never did on my main PC using samsung cloner and have had no issues.

        • @Davros:

          Thanks! Bought it

        • @SevenSmurfs:
          Struck grief already
Laptop has dynamic partitions so cant get anything to clone them.
I have a win 7 disc and product code from laptop so looks like a clean install.
Never done one before so a new skill about to be learned.

  • Bought a 120GB drive today. Just the bare drive w/o any software. It's not even formatted partitioned mac/pc so you'll need to do that to get your computer to see the drive when you first plug it in.

    Works great.

        I doubt it will be.
The V2 has an ethernet port that is missing from the item description of the sale product.

        • +1

Description says "a built-in Ethernet port provides instant network access to wired devices."

      • +1

Looks like it's not v2. I'll confirm when I get it but I won't pick it up until later this afternoon.

        • Picked mine up - no mention of v2 but has Ethernet port as others have commented.

      • +4

Just picked up one and it has a Ethernet port

      • Just picked one up.

Confirm that it has an Ethernet port

    • +1

I've just got mine. It doesn't say V2, but it has an Eehernet port on the side.
      The product number is: WRE2205-AU101F

    • I wonder if it can be use as a travel router eg. hotel wired connection into a wifi hotspot. Maybe future firmware update?

    • How do you order for pickup?

EDIT: found the option online, duh!

    • How do you select pickup only? Can only select postage.

    For a OS on HTPC,
Whats the main benefits of spending $15 more to get the Samsung 840 120G SSD ??

    • +1

An extra few percent of reliability.. Probably not worth the extra if it's just a casual gaming/browsing machine.

      • Probably?

You need to backup whichever drive you buy as there is no 100% reliability option. So what you are paying the $15 for is a slightly lower chance you will need to swap the drive out.

I don't do risk analysis but I'm surmising that if you were you would not pay the additional $15 because it's more likely to be a loss for an individual. If you manage large numbers of drives such as in a data centre the small difference in reliability actually does make a large difference since you are not paying people to swap drives.

        • +2

For a personal OS drive, you're losing nothing but access to the machine and some time to reinstall the OS and software.
And you can do this while watching the TV.. so even the time factor isn't a biggie really.

Given the remote chance of a complete failure within the expected lifespan of the machine/drive, I think it's worth saving the money.
If it were a more serious machine that you can't afford to have any downtime on, then sure, spend the $15 extra to reduce the chance of premature failure from 0.05% to 0.01% or whatever the figures are.
If you're putting files on the drive that you can't afford to lose, then you should be backing up anyway.

The Patriot Blaze is a slower budget SSD, check http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/high_end_drives.html
It gets about 2332 passmark performance rating.
The Samsung 840 EVO 120GB gets 3683, quite a large difference for a small difference in price.

      • Not small. The Samsung is $25 or 42% more. You could almost buy a third Patriot at the cost of 2 Samsungs.

        • +1

why go for a slow SSD then? stick with the HDD and get more capacity for the $.

        • +1

          @Logical: iops

        • @Logical:

Because the functional difference between a high-end SSD and a low-end SSD is quite minimal for the average user.

On the other hand, the difference between ANY SSD and a normal HDD is substantial and noticeable.

        • @silent1
          Greenboxit $75, $15 more…

        • +1

          @wako:
I wouldn't trust Greenboxit. They also charge you to pick up items.

So it's either get it delivered and not see your money or the product ever again or rock up in store and get hit by a pick up 'service'.

        • i don't think it is minimal when write times vary from around 500MB/s down to 200MB/s for a crap SSD. If you can spare an extra $15 to $20 then get a more decent SSD in the size.

        • @Logical:

          500MB/s down to 200MB/s

The thing is do you need the larger bandwidth anyway?
Unless you run some production software that need it most people won't notice it.

Copy/paste is limited by the storage HDD, USB drive. Internet download speeds are still 12MB/s (100Mb/s).

        • @silent1: I was responding to RJK. I agree with you… if I buy an SSD then it may as well be the fastest that it can be, otherwise if I get a cheapo slow SSD (say in 120GB) then for the same $$ I can get a traditional 2TB HDD 7200RPM

        • For the same $$ you could get a nice meal too. So what?

The NetGear RN31200 NAS is a good price at $259 - cheapest on StaticIce is $309

Its a higher performance model tho - if you just want a basic 2-bay NAS for home, the RN10200 is only $99 so dont pay 2.5 times the price unless you really need the extra CPU power and RAM etc.

    • Should I be looking into a nas if I don't have LAN cables running through the house? What transfer speed will I get if I use wifi or powerline adapter?

      • It's obviously better to have LAN, but the new EoP standard should be more than sufficient for Streaming HD (depends on the quality of your house wiring though)

      • It depends on what gear you need to connect, and where it is located.

A lot of media players (ChromeCast, Apple TV, PS4 etc) are WiFi, so as long as you connect the NAS via cable to your home internet router (directly, or perhaps via an 8-port switch) and your mobile devices (phones/tablets) and home theater devices (smart TV, media player etc) are within decent WiFi signal range, then its all good.

  • Thoughts on the EoP offerings? Heard edimax can be a bit so so, also what is the difference between the 2 units, one is nano and the other has integrated sockets?

    • Looks like just the integrated sockets to me and aesthetics. I wouldnt play the extra $20 for the sockets…

      • Maybe it reduces line noise if its all integrated. Or just aesthetics

    • Thoughts on the EoP offerings? Heard edimax can be a bit so so

      My thoughts here.

Any recommendations on Asus wifi modem router? , looks like the cheapest one.

  • Would the D-Link ANT24-0501 2.4GHz Indoor 5dBi Gain Omni Directional Antenna provide any noticeable gain? It seems a bit cheap to be useful. Think I might upgrade my router instead, the wire a second access point using Ethernet cable and have EOP on any other deadpsots.

    • -2

It seems a bit cheap to be useful.

      This isn't ozrrp.com.au - it's selling for 72% off.

Would the D-Link ANT24-0501 2.4GHz Indoor 5dBi Gain Omni Directional Antenna provide any noticeable gain?

5dBi. But seriously, a standard internal antenna would be what, 1.5-2dBi? So, the answer is… probably. For that price it's worth trying.

    • Is "aerial technology" really something you need to spend a lot of money on to get right LEL?

    • +2

Would the D-Link ANT24-0501 2.4GHz Indoor 5dBi Gain Omni Directional Antenna provide any noticeable gain?

No. See this thread and this thread.

Proper directional antennas do, since they focus the waves to where you need them, but they are significantly more expensive.

Cheap omni-directional antennas are still going to be bouncing the the signal around in many directions you don't need them to, which is what your modem's already doing.

If your APs are 6-15m away from the router, a gain of 5dBi is useless.

      You need either a better router (like a Billion 8800AXL, TP-Link Archer D7, Netgear R7000, Asus RT-AC68, D-Link DSL-2890A) or CAT6/EOP. Don't even think about WiFi Repeaters/Extenders.

  • Just went to MSY Mitcham.

No stock for Patriot Blaze 120GB SSD but they have 60GB and 240GB in stock.

    • wondering the same, for $11 + shipping it might be worth the gamble to find out

  • Great deal!

  • For those who bought the WiFi extender, you can upgrade your firmware from here: http://www.zyxel.com/au/en/support/download_library/product/…

  • anyone know if the asus DSL-N12E supports AP mode?

Thinking of pairing that with a EOP adaptor to get some wireless connectivity back to my base router.

  • Grabbed the ASUS DSL-N12E…cheers OP ;)
